Mrs McGinty's Dead
Mrs McGinty's Dead | Agatha Christie
31 posts | 64 read | 18 to read
Mrs. McGinty is dead and everyone suspects James Bentley, her slightly shifty lodger. In fact, James is facing a trial for an almost certain open-and-shut case. But Superintendent Spence is suspicious enough to ask for Hercule Poirot's assistance. Soon, the seemingly simple situation turns into a complex web of lies and hidden identities. Novelist Ariadne Oliver (Agatha Christie's alter ego) joins the hunt to find the real murderer.

Mehso-so

While I always enjoy Hugh Fraser's narration, I had to re-read parts of this on my Kobo to get the plot straight. Listening to the audiobook, if I let my attention stray for one moment, I lost the thread. Even reading back and understanding the basics, the motivations and details still don't make total sense to me. I like the characters, but it's not my favorite Poirot mystery.

I like the Poirot novels in which Mrs Oliver appears to be his enthusiastic sidekick. They are such an odd and funny pair.
This story did come up with so many suspects, I definitely did not see the ending coming.

Mrs. McGinty's dead and her tenant is convicted of her murder. But the inspector isn't convinced he is guilty and brings in Poirot to find a new perspective. Poirot ingratiates himself into the neighborhood and gains insight by studying the people.

Despite a guilty verdict and a death sentence, the police officer in charge of the investigation into the murder of Mrs McGinty is not convinced they've got the real culprit and asks Poirot to check before the execution.

I caught at least some of the little discrepancies which served as clues but still couldn't put them together.

LiteraryinLawrence I can never figure it out but I still love her books! 10mo

The investigation is entertaining in the funny mismatch between Poirot and his village landlords. The mystery itself was less engaging for me, but I thought the solution was clever - though I would have found it more so if it hadn't been hinted at so heavily.

I have plenty of other things I should be doing, but instead I‘ve been reading another Christie book. This one might be the most complicated plot of the ones I‘ve read, but I enjoyed it. Good characters, & Poirot is involved the whole time. And a good ending. #scarathlon @Clwojick 16 pts #teamslaughter

Bk7 of August & Bk4 of #AwesomeAugust #readathon is done. So is my scarf! Well, almost. Just a few more rows of #audioknitting & sewing in the ends, then I‘ll have a super chunky, very warm mustard & blue scarf🙌 This Dame Agatha was one I‘ve not read much, but I highly recommend it. It has a great story, Poirot & my fave character, Ariadne Oliver. What‘s not to love🤷🏻‍♀️ #PickYourPoison #ReadChristie2021 #ReadItAgainSam #AudiobookChallenge2021👇

Doing some more #audioknitting today to a Dame Agatha on #Scribd Mrs McGinty‘s Dead is one of hers I think I‘ve only read once before, but I adore the David Suchet episode with Zoe Wanamaker as Ariadne Oliver. A charwoman in Broadhinny is murdered & her lodger is convicted. But did he do it? Poirot is hired to make sure of his guilt. Have switched back to my chunky scarf, I have all the wool now so should finish it soon. #AwesomeAugust

Still love this book! It really is so useful that I don‘t remember the specifics of most of the Agathas I read after several years go by. So I can always reread them! I recommend this to anyone who hasn‘t read it. Poirot is asked by the police to come to a small town and see if he can prove that the guy who‘s been found guilty of a house cleaner‘s murder is actually innocent! What will he find?? 😉

BekaReid This was one of my first AC books! I'm overdue for a reread. 3y
LiteraryinLawrence I reread Sparkling Cyanide this week and it was also great! @BekaReid (edited) 3y

Poirot is in a race against time to save an innocent man from execution in this mystery. Mrs. McGinty‘s dead, but who would want to brutally kill an ordinary charwoman with meager savings? Of course Poirot uncovers the truth.

Finished my first cozy for #cozyinthesun

Of course it had to be Agatha Christie! Another great mystery by her. In this one Poirot is retired and an old police sergeant asks him for help in solving a crime that was already solved and arranged. Mrs. Oliver makes an appearance. She‘s a murder mystery author that I think was also in Halloween Party.

Audiobook 2 finished for #BFCr2 #SmallSteppers

“Mrs Oliver jerked open her eyes.
She had been lost in a nostalgic dream of home. Walls covered with exotic birds and foliage. A deal table, her typewriter, black coffee, apples everywhere. What bliss, what glorious and solitary bliss!
What a mistake for an #author to emerge from her secret fastness. Authors were shy, unsociable creatures, atoning for their lack of social aptitude by inventing their own companions and conversations.”

Another Poirot for my Agatha Christie binge! The mystery of this one was more fun than my last, although I always find Mrs. Oliver hard to take in these stories. She's a little too close to how Christie wants to present herself, self-deprecatingly, and I'd rather just read Poirot being Poirot.

#MrsMcGintysDead by #AgathaChristie is a #Pick! Though I wasn't clever enough to solve the murder mystery, it had plenty of twists and clues throughout the book that kept me up for many late night readings. I definitely recommend if you are into #Mystery / #Detective books! Now I want to watch #HerculePoirot 🔎
