The Great Gatsby: A Novel
The Great Gatsby: A Novel: Illustrated Edition | F. Scott Fitzgerald
A beautifully illustrated version of the original 1925 edition of F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic Great American novel. Widely considered to be the greatest American novel of all time, The Great Gatsby is the story of the wealthy, quixotic Jay Gatsby and his obsessive love for debutante Daisy Buchanan. It is also a cautionary tale of the American Dream in all its exuberance, decadence, hedonism, and passion. First published in 1925 by Charles Scribner's Sons, The Great Gatsby sold modestly and received mixed reviews from literary critics of the time. Upon his death in 1940, Fitzgerald believed the book to be a failure, but a year later, as the U.S. was in the grips of the Second World War, an initiative known as Council on Books in Wartime was created to distribute paperbacks to soldiers abroad. The Great Gatsby became one of the most popular books provided to regiments, with more than 100,000 copies shipped to soldiers overseas. By 1960, the book was selling apace and being incorporated into classrooms across the nation. Today, it has sold over 25 million copies worldwide in 42 languages. This exquisitely rendered edition of the original 1925 printing reintroduces readers to Fitzgerald's iconic portrait of the Jazz Age, complete with specially commissioned illustrations by Adam Simpson that reflect the gilded splendor of the Roaring Twenties.

4✨ I remember reading this in high school, but not quite understanding/remembering how it ended. As an adult I think I was able to absorb more of the story with understanding. This story is short, but it is expertly crafted. It‘s about love, loss, sacrifice, jealousy, bad decisions, and unlikely friends. I‘m glad I decided to do a reread.

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm I‘ve been thinking I should do a reread of this soon as well. It was my most hated book that school made me read, but I feel like I would probably have a better understanding/different attitude about it now. 3mo
TheLudicReader I think this is one of those books that needs a re-read. I didn‘t even like it until I‘d read it three times. Now …I think it‘s a beautiful book. 🤣 3mo
Ruthiella I also read this first in high school and appreciated it more on a second read. 3mo
mandarchy This is an interesting conversation. I reread it and still didn't like it. Maybe I harbor too much shame about alcoholism. I'm still not sure why it's such an important read, but I'm not willing to give it a third try. 😂 2mo

This was definitely one of the best classics I've read. I'm trying to determine what and how I feel about the story. It definitely impacted me. My mind is turning it over and over. Tragedy of course. Misguided love. Depravity of human nature. Triumph of the soul. All these things. 3 words: I loved it. Read it

dabbe And for me ... this one never gets old. I was gobsmacked at 16 when I first read it, and I'm gobsmacked now as a teacher who was lucky enough to teach it for 17 years. #tggalways 💛💜🧡 6mo

An important read but other Fitzgerald books are better. “Babylon revisited” explores similar criticisms of the American Dream, over indulgence, wealth and poverty while being more interesting and attention grabbing than the Great Gatsby.

This was my first time reading a book by F. Scott Fitzgerald so i wasnt sure what to expect especially since the reviews for it over the years are very up and down but i have to say i did enjoy it even tho the first few chapters came off repetitive but overall the connection for the story came together beautifully. The Characters were very enjoyable and interesting to read about.

Genre: Classic
The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald's third book, stands as the supreme achievement of his career. This exemplary novel of the Jazz Age has been acclaimed by generations of readers. The story of the fabulously wealthy Jay Gatsby and his love for the beautiful Daisy Buchanan, of lavish parties on Long Island at a time when The New York Times noted "gin was the national drink and sex the national obsession,".

First, Gyllenhaal is a surprisingly adept celebrity narrator. 🤩 Knowing the story of how this book wasn‘t popular until it was mass printed for soldiers in WWII, I can see how the setting and hypermasculinity of Buchanan and Gatsby made this a hit. I can see why many high schoolers, myself included, relate to the gossipy elements of this story. That said, as an adult, this is just okay. It‘s been way over analyzed for a mediocre book. 🤷🏻‍♀️

CBee I really didn‘t like this when I read it in school 🤭 1y

JoeMo It‘s nice to find people with similar opinions about this book. I‘ve had friends yelling at me on and off for over twenty years about how “amazing” this is and that I should try it again as I obviously didn‘t “get it.” Hell no, I‘m not reading it again! 1y
wanderinglynn I totally agree that this book has been over analyzed and overhyped. I think Fitzgerald is an overrated author. There were better authors in his generation. 1y
Cinfhen I bet Jake G was an awesome narrator!!! I liked this book well enough but I don‘t think I‘ll ever read it again. Three times in the last 12 years with my kiddos is plenty!!! 1y

I own both versions so for this read I switched back and forth between this edition and the Audible version depending on what I was doing all weekend. I almost never switch because I usually find it disjointed, but since that‘s kind of the mood of the whole story it didn‘t bother me quite as much. I definitely prefer this in print! I didn‘t really expect this to hold up, and while plenty of things here are offensive, the writing is still fabulous.

Something that I found memorable about the book the Great Gatsby by F Scott Fitzgerald is how all of the characters and the plot changed violently at the end of the book. The book at the beginning and most of the middle was not as violent as what it was at the end, where two murders and suicide happen. It makes sense in the plot line, but when I was reading it, the speed at which all of that happens surprised me.

The outsider POV of Nick Carraway—much like Fitzgerald‘s own outsider position during the Gilded Age—gives a wonderful, detached view of the opulence of the time. Knowing the social hierarchy of the day, Gatsby was also very much an outsider with his “new money”. That is very much the thesis of the book—not only the wretchedness of the rich to the poor, but the rich amongst themselves. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Awk_Word_Smith I haven‘t read Gatsby since probably college—so running on more than 20 years. But I find it ages pretty well in 2022. 2y
