Dead Until Dark
Dead Until Dark: A True Blood Novel | Charlaine Harris
214 posts | 651 read | 2 reading | 55 to read
Sookie Stackhouse is a small-time cocktail waitress in small-town Louisiana. She's quiet, keeps to herself, and doesn't get out much - not because she's not pretty, she's a very cute bubbly blonde, or not interested in a social life - she really is ... but Sookie's got a bit of a disability. She can read minds. And that doesn't make her too dateable. And then along comes Bill: he's tall, he's dark and he's handsome - and Sookie can't 'hear' a word he's thinking. He's exactly the type of guy she's been waiting all her life for. But Bill has a disability of his own: he's fussy about his food, he doesn't like suntans and he's never around during the day ...Yep, Bill's a vampire. Worse than that, he hangs with a seriously creepy crowd, with a reputation for trouble - of the murderous kind. And then one of Sookie's colleagues at the bar is killed, and it's beginning to look like Sookie might be the next victim ...

A favorite #AntiHero of mine from both the book & the television show. #TeamEric

These lines just seem to fit Eric Northman:
“I have this thing where I get older but just never wiser
Midnights become my afternoons
When my depression works the graveyard shift
All of the people I've ghosted stand there in the room”

#Two4Tuesday
1. I have so many females I love but I think I'd choose Sookie from the Southern Vampires Series (aka True Blood) She's a tough cookie who is constantly used, tricked & put in situations others create but always comes out on top.
2. I think I'd put her in the world of Black Dagger Brotherhood. That way she can still be around vampires, some who also have telepathy, but not be in constant danger or used for her gift.
@TheSpineView

TheSpineView That combination would be VERY interesting! Thanks for playing! 1y

I think I might have read this on Kindle about 9 years ago, but that was before I used Goodreads to track my reading. I don‘t think I loved it, but I don‘t think I hated it. This time, on audio, I just can‘t keep going. I‘m bored and annoyed. The constant reference to Sookie‘s ability to hear other people‘s thoughts as a disability sets my teeth on edge. I made it 1/3 of the way through, but I‘m done.

4✨ Sookie is a night waitress and has a special gift for reading minds. When a vampire named Bill comes in her life is changed forever. This was a really fun read. I could have done without all the sexual content. There was quite a bit of this, but in relatively short segments all through the book. The mystery was intriguing, and the danger very real. #Scarathon #TeamSlaughter @Clwojick

I‘ve decided to reread the Sookie Stackhouse series. I was watching True Blood earlier this summer. I am currently on Season 5, but I wanted to also read the books. I‘ve never listened to them on audio, so I figured I‘d try that and they are on hoopla.

Eric is my favorite, so I‘m just waiting to get to him and that storyline!

This was the first thing that came to mind for #Pub. Unfortunately, I only read the first book in the series and I only watched half of the first episode of the show. I couldn't get into either.

I wanted to like this book so much, I really did. I loved the TV series, and I‘m looking forward to the reboot. I had to bail on this, though. I just didn‘t like it. Personally, I just didn‘t think it was very well written; it couldn‘t hold my attention. I kept comparing it to the TV series, and it just didn‘t measure up. To each their own. I‘ll be rewatching the series instead of reading the books. Can‘t wait for the reboot series!

Ericalambbrown You know, I don‘t think I‘d have liked this even if I‘d not seen the series. I was kinda amazed these have been so popular supposedly. The characters just felt wooden to me. 3y
AliD73 @Ericalambbrown I agree. The characters just came across as two dimensional to me. I found Sookie and Bill to be unlikable and uninteresting, which totally took me by surprise. Sookie in particular just seemed shallow and not too intelligent to me. In this case, the TV series was better than the book. 3y
Ericalambbrown @AliD73 Right? It was almost as she were written to be a simpleton or special needs in some way. I looked to see what happens in book two to decide if I wanted to give it a go on the off chance it got better. I guess Lafeyette Reynolds if killed straight out the gate in that book do I was like “I‘m out!” 😂 3y
AliD73 @Ericalambbrown I know, right? LOL. I kept asking myself if Charlaine Harris deliberately wrote Sookie to be a moron or if that was just an accident resulting from her poor writing. It‘s rare that a movie or TV series is better than the book it is based on, but this is definitely one of those cases. (edited) 3y

Yikes. Well this is one where the book isn‘t better than the series. 😳 TBH, I thought Sookie and Bill were the least interesting characters in the show. The secondary characters made the series for me. I don‘t know what I was expecting but Sookie is written as a shallow simpleton and Bill is a boring and bossy creeper. No character development. The other characters are barely even window dressing. Zero campy fun.

Ericalambbrown I will say that Bubba the derpy Elvis vampire bit made me laugh aloud. That was by far the best bit for me. 😂 3y

Firstly I would like to say “God damn I am trash for these books!“
This was a re-read and I loved it just as much the third time as I did the first. I still think it was a crying shame they left the Man from Memphis out of the TV series.
We are introduced the world and all the main characters in such a efficient way and I just can't get enough. Not to mention that Bill hasn't turned into a giant dick yet.
3.5/5 Stars.

Omg I missed a day again. It may take me 30 days to get my #20Series20Days #Top20Series 😳

I started the Southern Vampire Mysteries series long before True Blood was a thing, and I honestly had a love/hate relationship with it... but I couldn‘t stop, even at the end when she was clearly phoning it in.

I still think about these books years later. Lots of fun, some very nice sexy times, Vampire Bill, and Eric freaking Northman. 😍

The first, and my first Sookie Stackhouse mystery and it won‘t be my last. Light, humorous, sexy entertainment. Vampires, mind-reading, shape shifters: what‘s not to like. Great escapist reading.

I‘ve never watched True Blood. If I enjoyed the book, would I enjoy the series?

Scochrane26 The show is very loosely based on the books, you have to treat them as two different things. The show has Alexander Skarsgard & several other hot guys. Has a lot of nudity if you don‘t like that. It‘s a fun show, you should watch. There‘s some storylines I don‘t like as much, but most are good. 4y

TheBookAddict No judgement here. I had this book on my shelf for the longest and I finally read it...well, I listened to it. It was really good, the narrator did a great job and the story is quite interesting. I haven‘t watched the show, so I wouldn‘t know how similar or different they are. RamsFan1963 @TheBookAddict It is still sitting on my shelf because, to be honest, I don't care for vampires. Like zombies, I think vampire lit is played out. I never watched True Blood, but I did read Harris's Midnight Texas series. 4y
TheBookAddict Yep, I understand. I usually don‘t go with vampire or zombie books, but I decided to give it a whirl. It‘s set in a world in which vampires are known about and part of society, which is why I was intrigued. This was the first book I read by Harris. 4y
