The Only Plane in the Sky
The Only Plane in the Sky: An Oral History of 9/11 | Garrett M. Graff
125 posts | 86 read | 5 reading | 93 to read
This is history at its most immediate and moving.A marvelous and memorable book. Jon Meacham The Only Plane in the Sky is a stunning and important workchilling, heartbreakingand I cannot stop thinking about it. Anderson Cooper The first comprehensive oral history of September 11, 2001a panoramic narrative woven from the voices of Americans on the front lines of an unprecedented national trauma. Over the past eighteen years, monumental literature has been published about 9/11, from Lawrence Wrights The Looming Tower, which traced the birth and rise of al-Qaeda, to The 9/11 Commission Report, the governments definitive factual retrospective of the attacks. But one perspective has been missing up to this pointa 360-degree account of the day told through the voices of the people who experienced it. Now, in The Only Plane in the Sky, award-winning journalist and bestselling historian Garrett Graff tells the story of the day as it was livedin the words of those who lived it. Drawing on never-before-published transcripts, recently declassified documents, original interviews, and oral histories from nearly five hundred government officials, first responders, witnesses, survivors, friends, and family members, Graff paints the most vivid and human portrait of the September 11 attacks yet. It begins in the predawn hours of airports in the Northeast, where we meet the ticket agents who unknowingly usher terrorists onto their flights, and then the flight attendants inside the hijacked planes themselves. In New York City, first responders confront a scene of unimaginable horror at the Twin Towers. From a secret bunker underneath the White House, Dick Cheney and Condoleezza Rice watch for incoming planes on radar. In the offices of the Pentagon, top officials feel the violent tremor as their headquarters comes under attack. Aboard the small number of unarmed fighter jets in the air, pilots make a pact to fly into a hijacked airliner if necessary to stop it from reaching its target. In the skies above Pennsylvania, civilians aboard United Flight 93 make the ultimate sacrifice in their place. Then, as the day moves forward and flights are grounded across the country, Air Force One circles the nation alone, its passengers isolated and afraid. More than simply a collection of eyewitness testimonies, The Only Plane in the Sky is the historic narrative of how ordinary people grappled with extraordinary events in real time: the father and son working on separate floors in the North Tower, caught on different ends of the impact zone; the firefighter who rushes to the scene to search for his wife who works at the World Trade Center; the operator of in-flight telephone calls who keeps her promise to share a passengers last words with his family; the beloved FDNY chaplain who stays on the scene to perform last rites for the dying, losing his own life when the Towers collapse; the newly widowed young father who picks his infant daughter up from daycare for the first time as a single dad; the teachers who hold their fear at bay while evacuating terrified children from schools mere blocks from the World Trade Center; the generals at the Pentagon who break down and weep when they are barred from rushing into the burning building to try to rescue their colleagues; and the students of all ages who struggle to process the mornings events, from those who grimace through school picture day to those who are following the news on college campuses far from home. At once a powerful tribute to the courage of everyday Americans and an essential addition to the literature of 9/11, The Only Plane in the Sky weaves together the unforgettable personal experiences of the men and women who found themselves caught at the center of an unprecedented human drama. The result is a unique, profound, and searing exploration of humanity on a day that changed the course of history, and all of our lives.

This was a hard listen. We know what happened that day, but it was so much more intimate to hear the stories from survivors and the families of those lost. The bravery of the first responders cannot be overstated. Many went in that building with the full understanding they probably won‘t make it out.

I highly recommend the audiobook. It features a full cast representing all the stories being shared. Audio of select phone calls also included.

#currentlyreading Another #becauseoflitsy read. Very thankful Spotify allows free (if limited) access to audiobooks for premium members. I use it when there is a several month wait at the library.

This book is wonderfully done. Many of the stories are hard to hear.

@Chelsea.Poole I can‘t thank you enough for putting this on my #auldlangspine list, I t‘s something I wouldnt‘ve gravitated toward on my own but it was incredibly powerful and I‘m so glad I listened to it! This was a difficult book. I started crying during the intro and basically didn‘t stop for most of the 13 hours of audio, so I had to listen in small doses over several weeks. But I‘m glad this account exists, and I highly recommend it.👇🏼

IndoorDame No matter where you were that day, what your personal connection to the tragedy and the people killed, what your political views on the aftermath, you will be moved by this. It distills events down to the human level, focusing on firsthand accounts of survivors, family members, rescue workers, government officials, airline officials, and people watching across the country. 2mo

My favorite read of September was The Only Plane in the Sky: An Oral History of 9/11 that interwove the stories of several people and events from 9/11 on the same timeline to get a sense of how different events unfolded relative to one another. This was great, especially on audio with actual recordings mixed in with the narration.

I agree with the many who call this a must-read. Such a beautifully crafted history of that horrific day. The part of the book that inspired the title (what was happening on Air Force One) was the least interesting to me, though I still appreciated learning more about that. What affected me most were the memories shared by survivors, loved ones, bystanders in NY/DC area/PA, and everyday Americans (especially the kids!).

I‘m doing my annual re-listen to this book and the beginning always reminds me that people often need to share the story of where they were when 9.11 happened. If you want to share, comment below.

Born.A.Reader I was in my 9th grade English class, when a neighboring teacher burst into the room and cried out, "Turn on the TV!" We sat through that and each class after, frozen in shock, eyes on the screen. 7mo
MidnightBookGirl @Born.A.Reader The author interviewed kids from preK up to college to get their impressions of the day. It‘s some powerful stuff. 7mo

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 Fascinating history of 9/11 told through dozens of first-person accounts of the day and the aftermath woven together.

fredthemoose Thanks for the recommendation, @CBee ! 7mo
keithmalek No, thank you. I'm a New Yorker. Can't do it. 7mo
CBee @fredthemoose you‘re welcome! 7mo
keithmalek Correction. I can read about it, but only tangentially. For example, I don't remember what it's called, but I read that book about the flights that were diverted to Newfoundland that day. I also read Grand Illusion, which is about Giuliani's 9/11 failures. I tried to read The Looming Tower, but it was boring, and I stopped. But as for that day, specifically, I can't bring myself to read about it. 7mo

Once again, I‘m rendered speechless. Such an important book that I think everyone should read. It‘s even more poignant for me considering Monday is the anniversary (I don‘t actually like using that word for it as it‘s not exactly something to be celebrated, but I digress). All of the stars for this one 💔

I buddy read this with a friend. This is such a powerful and heartbreaking book. It takes the oral history of those directly a part of that fateful day and puts them together in a chronological timeline. Hearing the firsthand accounts of the survivors, of those who lost loved ones, and of those who chose to risk their own lives to save others…I teared up many times while reading.

Friends, I listen to so many audiobooks, but this may be the best I‘ve ever read. An outstanding work which everyone should read. I‘ve recommended (read: forced) this upon everyone I know. Details from 9/11 which I have never considered, perspectives from so many who were impacted, collected here in their own words. Organized by event (such as North Tower collapse) with multiple sources contributing to each. Complete but not overwhelming.

TheDaysGoBy 100% agree with everything you said. I‘ve listened to several audiobooks on 9/11 and this one is the best one I‘ve come across so far 10mo

There are many thoughts and emotions present throughout the whole book. I've never gained so many equally important perspectives from one story. The tragedy compounded in ways I didn't know before this book. I had to pick up a lighter book several times in between this heavy hearted story but I am beyond grateful to have experienced it. The audio is amazing with a 45 person cast. May we never forget.

#FallTreasures #9/11(20yrsLater)

Books from my #TBR & #read stacks either about 9/11 or where it plays a significant role in the story.

I had been in Hawaii about 5 months on 9/11 & rented the top part of a house. I woke up about 4AM as my neighbor‘s TV was loud. I turned mine on to find the news that the first plane hit the World Trade Center & kept watching as it just kept getting worse. I felt so alone & isolated from everyone that day.💔

DebinHawaii I‘ve only just started the tagged book this month. It‘s going to be slow going I think as I have to listen in short bursts so it doesn‘t overwhelm. 💜 3y
JenReadsAlot It was a really hard book to read - breaks are needed for sure! 3y
Texreader I‘ve really steered away from books on the topic. Remembering that day, standing and watching the tv in sorrow and tears, still brings me to tears. I had just flown through Newark the week before and pointed out the twin towers to mom as we‘d been vacationing in Europe. I used to work north of the city and would look on the towers down the Hudson River and I loved them. The attack hit our heart. 3y

My last book for #Booked2021 summer edition.

This was a sobering and emotional account of the events of 9/11. Using the first hand oral histories and documentation of that day, Graff provides a timeline and overview which puts the then unthinkable unknown and chaos into perspective. The author points out, we are now entering the generation of adults who weren‘t alive in 2001. This book encapsulates the urgency and import of that day in history.

No idea really 🤷‍♀️ will finish Before he Kills Again today. The new James and Marsons books arrive on my kindle on Thursday and the 9/11 book jumped out at me this morning, Rose Gold has been loitering waiting to be picked! We‘ll see.

squirrelbrain Ooh, I forgot about the new Marsons - that might be in my reading life very soon! 😁 I really liked Rose Gold, but I know some didn‘t.... 3y
Oryx I am about half way through Only Plane. It's a really interesting story telling method, and it works. I need to get back and finish it at some point soon. 3y

The last image I posted is one story that always sticks with me, from all of the things I‘ve watched/read/heard about 9/11. This is another.

Linda Lopez was in the South Tower when the North was hit. She evacuated, taking her shoes off to flee the building. Linda walked home with bleeding feet. To me, this image takes the collective to the individual. A visceral reminder of the human experience of the day.

megnews I‘ve recommended this book so many times. Another excellent one is (edited) 3y
Lesanne I listened to this on audio also...it was amazing! (edited) 3y
Connster @megnews Yes!! I‘ve read this one! I agree it‘s excellent! 3y
Connster @Lesanne It is! One of the best audio books I‘ve listened to. So well done. 3y

I‘ve listened to this one in almost one session. I‘ve been to the 9/11 memorial twice, have watched many, many documentaries and read countless books about the day. Hearing the chronology of the day told by the actual voices of firefighters, businesspeople, observers, survivors, politicians and the president is just something else.

Helmet pictured was work by Mickey Kross, firefighter who “tried to climb into it” during the collapse.

I‘ve been having trouble writing reviews lately, so I decided to take a step back and just not post any for a while. But it feels weird not updating what I‘m reading, so here‘s what I‘ve read the past two months. I enjoyed all of them, but the top three were definitely my favorites.

🇺🇸Today, our nation saw evil, the very worst of human nature, and we responded with the best of America, with the daring of our rescue workers, with the caring for strangers and neighbors who came to give blood and help in any way they could.

None of us will ever forget this day, yet we go forward to defend freedom and all that is good and just in our world.🇺🇸

All the stars for this audio oral history of 9/11. A full cast gives voices to the the stories of survivors, first responders, those who lost loved ones, and so many others. I cried. A lot. I also celebrated the near misses and was left breathless by the selfless heroism. This was really amazing.

So very fitting that my last book of the year is also the best of the year. This really deserves all the stars! I think I had tears either in my eyes or falling from my eyes the entire time I listened to this. We all know exactly where we were that day...and how we found out. We all have our stories of that day...

Ya know it was something the way our country came together after this tragedy...and sadly, we are so far from that now.

Day 10 of #12booksof2020

I read this about a year ago and the one thing that struck me was how haunting the book was, as my mind kept going back to September 11, 2001 multiple times and I remember it as clear as day, even though it‘s been over 18 years ago. That day is so clear to me that I can still recall what I did in what order and it‘s pretty precise.

Lesanne I listened to this on audio and it was amazing! 3y
megnews This was one of the best I read in 2019. This year one of my top 13 is Fall and Rise which is another excellent timeline of the day. 3y
