The Handmaid's Tale (Graphic Novel)
The Handmaid's Tale (Graphic Novel): A Novel | Margaret Atwood
Everything Handmaids wear is red: the colour of blood, which defines us. Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead, where women are prohibited from holding jobs, reading, and forming friendships. She serves in the household of the Commander and his wife, and under the new social order she has only one purpose: once a month, she must lie on her back and pray that the Commander makes her pregnant, because in an age of declining births, Offred and the other Handmaids are valued only if they are fertile. But Offred remembers the years before Gilead, when she was an independent woman who had a job, a family, and a name of her own. Now, her memories and her will to survive are acts of rebellion. Provocative, startling, prophetic, The Handmaid’s Tale has long been a global phenomenon. With this stunning graphic novel adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s modern classic, beautifully realized by artist Renée Nault, the terrifying reality of Gilead has been brought to vivid life like never before.

What am I doing on my Sunday night: Reading of course. I‘m back to my one sit reads. I had a 3$ Verizon up reward for Barnes and Noble so I used it on the nooks ebook edition of The Handmaid‘s Tale Graphic novel. I watch the show, I own the book (and no I haven‘t read it) and honestly while I find this adaptions art to be pretty I‘m still not inspired to read the book. #onesitreads #feministreading

I love dystopian, so naturally, this will be one of my favorites for life. However, it also gave me a lot to think about, some of which is not going to be popular. Here's my review: https://www.greatbookstudy.com/2019/07/the-handmaids-tale-by-margaret-atwood.htm...
Have you READ it? and what did it cause you to think about?

pilardib I'm glad I waited until 2019 to read this book 2w
LapReader I wish it was dystopian and not more and more like reality. 2w
TheEllieMo It‘s always described as dystopian, but as Atwood herself states, there‘s nothing in the book that hasn‘t already been done. That‘s what makes it all the more disturbing and thought-provoking. 2w

GreatBookStudy @TheEllieMo This is true. That‘s what makes it so poignant. 2w
GreatBookStudy @LapReader We enjoy so many liberties today, but what gives us pause is the absolute possibility of the instant loss of those liberties. And Atwood does bring that to our attention. 2w

Finally brought this book to the top of my TBR pile. Why have I waited so long to read it? Fabulous, thought provoking book, I feel like I need to discuss it with everybody. Already I can‘t wait until The Testaments is released.

Birdsong28 I made my best friend read it after she loved the show to make her aware of the difference between the two. She isn't a big reader but she loved the book and we both can't wait for the next in the series. I am just worried how the new book will fit in with the series 2-3 as I don't want to just be reading what I have already seen but I know that the author has only done the book because of the series and the interest it had gained. 2w
TheEllieMo @Birdsong28 I had planned on watching the series, but the further into the book I got, the less I wanted to. I have so many images in my head of the clothes and events described, I want to keep those! 2w
Birdsong28 @TheEllieMo That is what the author of the graphic novel did, she didn't watch so she would have her own ideas about the events and other images. You should check it out, I am currently reading it even though I am not a big reader of graphic novels. 2w

“When I wrote The Handmaid‘s Tale,” Atwood says in the promo, “nothing went into it that had not happened in real life somewhere at some time. The reason I made that rule is that I didn‘t want anybody saying, ‘You certainly have an evil imagination, you made up all these bad things.‘ I didn‘t make them up.”

I love the show, and I really enjoyed the different directions the book takes compared to the show. It‘s a much more personal and emotionally complex story, and it doesn‘t rely on narrative momentum propelling June on a hero‘s journey. In this way June‘s place in the world feels even more precarious. Incredibly prescient for 1985, it still feels fresh and relevant. I wonder what the sequel will have to say about our future now.

Not as good as the original book, but a decent adaptation. I don‘t think this was successful in creating the chilling tone that defines the book, but there are hints of it here. The art is good, although the characters do not look like what I imagined. Overall, I wonder if this would be as understood by people who have not read the book. It felt like it left too much out. 3.5 stars.

BookwormM I often think that when I watch film adaptations do people who haven‘t read the book actually get what is happening 3w

Listened to the Audible Audiobook, narrated by Clare Danes. Narration was excellent, Danes did a fantastic job of emoting without over-acting. Atwood voices notes at the end and I appreciated her direct input in how/why she wrote what she did.

Rarely can a book be beautiful and terrifying at once. I wonder if I‘d have felt the same had I read it 20 years ago.

Leftcoastzen I read it when it first came out it was beautiful and horrifying then too.The difference now is it seems more likely to happen.😳 1mo
