Odd and the Frost Giants
Odd and the Frost Giants | Neil Gaiman
103 posts | 148 read | 109 to read
Odd's luck has been bad so far. He lost his father on a Viking expedition, his foot was crushed beneath a tree, and the winter seems to be going on for ever. But when Odd flees to the woods and releases a trapped bear, his luck begins to change. The eagle, bear and fox he encounters reveal they're actually Norse gods, trapped in animal form by the evil frost giants who have conquered Asgard, the city of the gods . . . Can a twelve-year-old boy reclaim Thor's hammer, outwit the frost giants and release the gods? With Neil Gaiman's wit and style this story transcends the everyday and becomes a humorous, rich and layered tale of a life lived courageously.

Love Neil Gaiman and Norse Mythology. In this tale Odd meets a bear, a fox and an eagle who talk and aren't really animals 🐻🦊🦅

I love Gaiman's writing style and this was a pretty good story, but it just felt too rushed.

Quick easy read, I like the edition with Chris Riddell‘s illustrations the most because I‘m just a huge Riddell fan but the Brett Helquist edition is still cool too. Drawing on both Norse mythology and historical Vikings it tells a fun story of small and clever Odd who goes on an adventure with the animal shaped gods Odin, Thor and Loki to help them return to Asgard and regain their human forms again.

Now THIS is more like it! This is as if L Frank Baum and Rick Riordan teamed up to create a children‘s novella ! Very fun and entertaining listen with interesting characters ! With Gaiman narrating his own book, I felt as if I were a child being read a bedtime story! Will definitely be reading this to my future child one day

What a fun adventure!
Pairing two of my favourites Neil and Chris this book was everything I'd hoped it to be.
Beautifully illustrated, fun, quirky and just the escapade I was looking for.

I seem to go through these stages, a few years back it was all Greek Mythology, the Roman Mythology and now it's Norse Mythology. And this book delivered just the right dosages to keep me entertained and enlightened.

Enchanted_Bibliophile This was also my pick for #TheReadingRush : Read a book in a genre that you‘ve always wanted to read more of. 4y

“The wise man knows when to keep silent. Only the fool tells all he knows.”
This book is about a Viking boy named Odd, who sets off on an adventure with Norse gods Thor, Loki, and Odin to save Asgard from the frost giants. A tender tale suitable for older kids and adults (though there‘re no brutal parts) and a good introduction to Norse mythology. Perhaps it‘s a perfect time for me to pick up his adult book Norse Mythology next.

My first Gaiman kids‘ book, and I really liked it. I love the way he takes a familiar story and turns it into his own, without hurting the spirit of the original. It‘s a rare gift.

First day of school this morning, and we had time to finish the last two chapters of this before we left the house (I‘d like to pretend I just have this motherhood thing down pat, but honestly, it‘s probably a sign of the apocalypse)…9 year old loved it, really related to Odd. Great read aloud book, with so few characters that you can really go nuts with voices

Listened to this one on audio with my kids. Gaiman, as always, is a superb narrator. I could listen to that man talk forever. Fun, engaging story, and all my many ages of kids liked it. Any other recommendations for short audio books for all ages? We just finished Gaiman‘s Fortunately the Milk as well.

Another Audiobook finished!! And another amazing story by Gaiman. This one is Norse mythology, Odin, Loki, Thor and Lady Freya, and how their world was saved by a small boy named Odd. It was a cute retelling and once again Gaiman knows just how much and how little to add.

This was my first audio book narrated by Neil Gaiman. It will not be my last! He has a great reading voice! This was a quick and delightful story about Odd. He is a crippled boy that has to help the Norse gods against a Frost Giant. I loved this story. Now to download more Gaiman books!

toofondofbooks I recommend them all but my faves are The Graveyard Book and The Ocean at the End of the Lane. 6y
tjwill I love his narration of his own books. I recommend Neverwhere and The Ocean at the End of the Lane. 6y

JazzFeathers I have never listened to Gaiman reading but l need to. I read this story last year (for a Litsy challenge, actually) and loved it. Such a great sense of folktale and still told in such a modern way 6y

A cute Norse retelling involving Loki, Thor and Odin - changed into a fox, bear and eagle - who need the help of a young boy named Odd to defeat the frost giant who took Thor‘s hammer and invaded Asgard.

It‘s a perfect read following Gaiman‘s Norse mythology, as some of the myths are alluded to in Odd. #neilgaiman #norsemythology

I adore Neil Gaiman, both the man and his writing. I dream vividly and they are usually most unsettling in nature. However, last night I dreamt I was at Mr Gaiman's home, having dinner with him & his wife. What a lovely host he was! Though I don't remember the details, I recall that the conversation was splendid. That's a dream I'd be happy to see come true! 😂 #bookishdreams #neilgaiman
