Sorcery of Thorns
Sorcery of Thorns | Margaret Rogerson
From the New York Times bestselling author of An Enchantment of Ravens comes an imaginative fantasy about an apprentice at a magical library who must battle a powerful sorcerer to save her kingdom. All sorcerers are evil. Elisabeth has known that as long as she has known anything. Raised as a foundling in one of Austermeers Great Libraries, Elisabeth has grown up among the tools of sorcerymagical grimoires that whisper on shelves and rattle beneath iron chains. If provoked, they transform into grotesque monsters of ink and leather. She hopes to become a warden, charged with protecting the kingdom from their power. Then an act of sabotage releases the librarys most dangerous grimoire. Elisabeths desperate intervention implicates her in the crime, and she is torn from her home to face justice in the capital. With no one to turn to but her sworn enemy, the sorcerer Nathaniel Thorn, and his mysterious demonic servant, she finds herself entangled in a centuries-old conspiracy. Not only could the Great Libraries go up in flames, but the world along with them. As her alliance with Nathaniel grows stronger, Elisabeth starts to question everything shes been taughtabout sorcerers, about the libraries she loves, even about herself. For Elisabeth has a power she has never guessed, and a future she could never have imagined.

Made me laugh and cry and want to live in a library all at once.

Great YA fantasy. I liked this world of old libraries full of magical/secret grimoires protected by sorcerers. But those sorcerers can be corrupted by demons and as expected, one person wants to control the magic. Most fantasy worlds have this topic🤷🏽‍♀️There is some romance and family drama. Loved Silas and Nathaniel and his comments. There is a companion book that I need to read now☺️still YA 3.8/4⭐️

The job interview questions (to work in the Royal Library) include: how quickly can she run, and, whether she strongly valued keeping all ten fingers. 😆
Having worked in libraries filled with grimoires that have various skills and are fraught with danger, Elisabeth joins forces with Nathaniel and his demon, Silas, to battle evil.
This was a bunch of fun. I can‘t wait to read the new novella to see what happens next. 📚📖😬📕 #catsoflitsy

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Apparently I‘m just giving out 5 star reviews like candy on Halloween this month—this is my 4th of the month & we‘re only 7 days in! 😬 This is a super fun YA fantasy centered on a library filled with books that talk, throw temper tantrums, get into fights, &, if really unhappy, turn into monsters. Add a strong, independent heroine, brooding sorcerer, & demonic servant & you have the recipe for quite an adventure. I want more please!

DGRachel I‘ve had this on my bookshelf for years…😳 1y

This was an interesting read. I love a book that focuses on books. The plot is steady until close to the end when it really picks up. The ending was good and tied the story off well. The characters are well written and likeable especially the lead. A good fantasy read. 4*

The world building and magic system in this book was amazing. The romance was a subplot and was not distracting to the story at all. Miranda was a strong female character that didn't need rescuing. Silas was my absolute favorite. I love the chemistry that Miranda, Nathaniel, and Silas had. The end though.. I need a least a novella more on Silas!!

My husband gave me this book last year for Hanukkah, & it took me forever to finish! Overall, it‘s a fun book that features librarians as powerful fantasy heroes, & magical books. It felt like reading a fan fiction of the manga Black Butler because of Silas & the flow of action. There were a few things I didn‘t enjoy related to YA tropes I didn‘t like as a teen, & the whole “sorcerers are evil” felt incredibly forced. #BooksAboutBooks #Librarian

I ended up really enjoying this book. It didn‘t fall into a lot of the YA trope traps that have become so ubiquitous. Magical books and libraries are a prominent feature of the plot, which is what drew me in initially. One criticism is that the battle/fight scenes in the final third of the book did bore me, and I found myself skimming a lot through that section. I was glad the book ended definitively and doesn‘t signal a sequel/series.

Asthecroweflies Have you read her book Enchantment of Ravens? It‘s really good 3y

I found the plot predictable and the romance forced and unconvincing. I had some hope for a romance between Silas and Elisabeth—now that would have been surprising and interesting—but that was pretty clearly not going to happen.

I‘m loving the setting of this but… not really anything else so far. I keep rolling my eyes at the endearingly clumsy protagonist and the mysterious, hot sorcerer. I am, however, trying to give the sorcerer a better chance… it‘s not his fault I thought he was going to turn out to be a woman.

A genuinely fun YA fantasy which started strong with likeable characters, interesting world-building, and the promise of a cute romance. But it lost steam in the middle as the plot started to plod and everything started working out exactly as the main characters needed it too. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

❤️ Great narration, an interesting world and great characters. I am going to buy this eventually, it was that good. 5 stars. Raised in a great library and to believe that all sorcery is evil, Elisabeth must work with a sorcerer from one of the darkest families to save the libraries and save the world. Full of dangerous books, libraries with dungeons and lot of complicated politics, the romance is a balanced relationship among the strong plot. 5/5

A tall, clever, strong orphan girl raised in a library full of magical books? A bisexual sorcerer with a wicked sense of humor and a sexy silver streak in his hair? Moral ambiguity and inaccurate reputations for days? Yeah, I'm in. I had to listen to the second half of this on 3x speed to finish it in time for a book club, which was less than ideal, but even so I really loved it, and it works well both in physical book form and audiobook form. 🥀

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️I‘ll just start with: I loved this book. Librarians with swords? I‘m hooked. But I think the most impressive aspect of this book was that Rogerson resisted the pressure to make it into multiple books. I could easily see where this could be a trilogy, but I loved that she realized it didn‘t need to be. The world was fully realized, the characters interesting & dynamic, the magic system made sense, and all in one book. Highly recommend.

Book #30 - It read a bit younger than I expected, which makes me think I‘d have enjoyed it more if I‘d read it when I was younger. I did love the library/grimoire vibes and it had an interesting take on magic. In a weird way, it reminded me of reading the first Harry Potter book - the adventures they got into.

I REALLY love the worldbuilding of this standalone book; with the Grimoires and Great Libraries? Amazing. I love Nathaniel's response to everything that remotely inconveniences him is sarcasm, Elisabeth's stubborn hardheadedness and love to protect the Grimoires and Nathaniel? Let's not forget Silas' complete lack of interest with everything and anyone but Nate and Lis.

Overall — would 100% reread
