Sentimental, but not saccharine. If you've read 84, Charing Cross Road, this builds out from there - some background to how the book came to be, and subsequently how the author's life was shaped by it, and intermittently slipped out of the public eye. Interesting to see an older person deal with the trappings of being KNOWN. Will definitely be reading The Duchess of Bloomsbury Street as well. Blame the '80s for this cover. 🤦🏼‍♂️

This was a nice, light read. The author tells amusing anecdotes about his career as a rare/antiquarian book seller.

Had a bit of a slump in April but May got me back on track! I‘ve realised when I‘m in a slump it‘s chunksters that get me out of it - something meaty to really get lost in. What gets you back on track?

Ruthiella I don‘t think I‘ve been in a slump, but when I am anxious, I reread or read Agatha Christie. 5d
Kristin_Reads I always come back to Mary Oliver when I‘m in a slump. 4d

My ideal bookshop would be quiet. I would organize it in the same way that a library would organize their collections, with more of an emphasis on historical fiction and nonfiction. I would sell new books, along with totes, bookmarks, journals, pens, etc. It would be a two story building with a cafe on the second floor that would sell mainly light breakfast and lunch items, with baked goods and coffees and teas and other drinks. ⤵️

melissajayne It would be open until about 9 pm Monday through Saturday allowing for people to come in the evening after work and open until about 6 pm on Sunday. I would like the ground floor to have some space for an area for kids and teen books. I would try to make a room for book club meetings that customers could reserve ahead of time.⤵️ 1w
melissajayne Of course there would be a fee to reserve the space and there would also be catering services available for groups reserving the space. I would probably also offer alcoholic beverages with a very limited menu. I don‘t know what I would call it. #wondrouswednesday 1w
melissajayne I would also try to primarily hire those individuals on social assistance. 1w
Eggs Well done - thanks for playing 👏🏻👌🏼 1w
