There are a lot of powerful thoughts in this tiny book. Rilke‘s ideas often reminded me of Buddhist texts for how deeply he considers concepts like emotion and solitude.

A soft pick. There were some issues I had to handwave but I concentrated on the interesting work the expedition was doing. I enjoyed seeing the same events through more than one POV- it was a good reminder that people often view things very differently from others without being motivated by maliciousness.
The descriptions of nature & the acknowledgement that there were competing ideas about how to protect (& exploit) the park were good.
Some of these are so insignificant, and just included so that Montefiore can talk about the context. Sometimes that's interesting, sometimes less so, but honestly I found the letters and choice thereof fairly meh.
Also the organisation is weird. Themes I can get, but chronology within each theme is all jumbled.
