Tombland
Tombland | C. J. Sansom
One of the great overlooked historical detective series continues with this mystery for fans of Hilary Mantel, set in a time of great political upheaval in Tudor-era England. Spring, 1549. Two years after the death of Henry VIII, England is sliding into chaos. The nominal king, Edward VI, is eleven years old. His uncle, Edward Seymour, Lord Hertford, rules as Edward's regent and Protector. In the kingdom, radical Protestants are driving the old religion into extinction, while the Protector's prolonged war with Scotland has led to hyperinflation and economic collapse. Rebellion is stirring among the peasantry. Matthew Shardlake has been working as a lawyer in the service of Henry's younger daughter, the lady Elizabeth. The gruesome murder of one of Elizabeth's distant relations, rumored to be politically murdered, draws Shardlake and his companion Nicholas to the lady's summer estate, where a second murder is committed. As the kingdom explodes into rebellion, Nicholas is imprisoned for his loyalty, and Shardlake must decide where his loyalties lie--with his kingdom, or with his lady?

Hi, Shardlakians! If you have been tagged, it is because you contributed at least once to one or more of our Shardlake discussions. As a thank you, I have a little token I'd like to mail to you for your participation. If interested, please fill out the information in this survey link: https://forms.gle/kpRanX93ZQowZKaM9 by this Friday, 10/24. Thanks! 🖤#forevershardlaked🖤

Librarybelle I plan to get back to this series…if I can ever get back to reading! Thanks for hosting this. I‘m so glad I got introduced to Shardlake. 21h
LiseWorks So, the link doesn't work. 20h
dabbe @Librarybelle I hear ya! I'm two books behind in Nancy Drew and 1 book behind in Christie. Our pets have been taking up our time as I'm sure yours have as well. Plus, I'm just kind of in a slump in general. State of our country perhaps. 🧡💜💛 19h

Librarybelle @dabbe Agreed. I‘m so disgusted by what is happening in the country and juggling medical care for Zeke (and Xander, though his heart condition is easier to manage) and now balance an outside the home temp job with my other work obligations. Sigh…audiobooks seem to be my go to at the moment. 18h
lil1inblue Thanks for hosting this! I really enjoyed the series, as well as the rabbit holes it sent me down. I don't know that I would have made it through the whole thing if it weren't for the buddy read and the discussions! ❤️ 4h

Thoughts, Shardlakians?

LiseWorks I was disappointed that our main character, Shardlake, never found the love of his life. Other than that, it was a good ending for Barack. 6d
Bookwomble Sherlockians? Shardlakians? 😁 6d

dabbe @LiseWorks IKR? It's promising that he might find something with Liz ... maybe ... but it's not a heart-palpating love. 6d
AnneCecilie I‘m happy that Shardlake and Tamasin became friends again. I hope that they all start working together again. 6d
kwmg40 I too am happy that Shardlake and Tamasin reconciled. I liked Barak and Overton, mostly because their characters developed in interesting ways. 5d
dabbe @AnneCecilie I was so happy to see this, too. He and Barak need each other. 21h

Thoughts, Shardlakians?

LiseWorks All were good. The last one was a bit long. 6d
AnneCecilie Thinking about it after reading them all one after another, I feel that in a way they‘re all one book. The first has the dissolution of the monasteries and over the next books we see how “normal” peoples situation decreases and in the end there‘s no other option than revolt. When you have nothing left to loose, you‘ll fight for you betterment (edited) 6d
dabbe @AnneCecilie You bring up an excellent point. I can't help but wonder if Sansom had lived, how he would have carried this series forward. Would he have seen Shardlake through to his older years? To Queen Elizabeth being on the throne? Sad that we'll never know. 💔 (edited) 6d
See All 13 Comments
AnneCecilie I‘m not sure, most crime series ends after 8 or 10 books, but I would have loved one final case with all three. I loved the dynamic between them in earlier books. Something was missing for me when Barak wasn‘t in them as much. I always thought Shardlake retired and moved out of the city, most have mixed that up with one of the earlier books when I talks about his dead. 6d
lil1inblue Looking back, I think Dark Fire (we meet Barak!) and Heartstone were my favorites. Tombland is my least favorite, though still a low pick. I did read somewhere online that he did want to continue the series through Elizabeth becoming Queen. I think a novel set when Mary was Queen would have been fascinating (a total flip on the religious stuff). 6d
Mollyanna I enjoyed all of them but Dark Fire was my favorite by far. We meet Barak, still have Cromwell around manipulating things, Richard Rich kind of in his place…. Plus I am fascinated by Greek fire and the potential of it. 6d
kwmg40 I don't think I can pick a favourite. I loved every single book in this series. 5d
kwmg40 @dabbe Thank you so very much for leading this buddy read. I really enjoyed it! 4d
dabbe @LiseWorks Agree! 🎯♥️🎯 21h
dabbe @lil1inblue Those are my two favorites as well! #greatminds A book with “Bloody Mary“ at the helm would have been fascinating! 21h
dabbe @Mollyanna Totally agree! 🎯♥️🎯 21h

Thoughts, Shardlakians?

LiseWorks I knew they wouldn't win. Sad to say, but rich men seem to have all the power. They tried, though, and I think the two brothers were naive 6d
dabbe @LiseWorks @AnneCecilie I sure was rooting for them, even though I knew the English army would come in and kick some serious ass. 🧡💜💛 (edited) 6d
AnneCecilie The Kett brothers, they had the most to lose. But I also think about Natty and Simon. And I had hoped for better for Josephine 6d
See All 12 Comments
dabbe @AnneCecilie Agree 💯. 6d
lil1inblue I didn't know about Kett's rebellion before reading this book, and I found the history fascinating. But I'm also in a rebellious mood. 😉 6d
Mollyanna I was really intrigued by the Kett rebellion. Samsom also did such a great job of blending the real and fictional. 6d
kwmg40 I found the historical setting very interesting, so much so that I hope I can visit Norwich and surrounding areas on my next trip to England. 5d
dabbe @lil1inblue Same, my friend, same. 💙✊🏻💙 21h

Well, we made it! Boy, was this one intense. Thoughts, Shardlakians?

LiseWorks I do think it was too long. And yes, I always read the notes at the end of the book. 6d
OutsmartYourShelf Thanks for hosting the readalong & for the questions @dabbe

I probably won't finish this one until next month as in the midst of Halloween readathons. I'm definitely finding it a slog to finish.
(edited) 6d
dabbe @LiseWorks @OutsmartYourShelf I read an article about Sansom when he wrote this last book. He knew he was dying, and I think he pushed himself to say ALL the things he wanted to say before he couldn't say them anymore. This one's bittersweet for me because of that. And also because I, too, think it was way too long and tried to do way too much. 6d
See All 15 Comments
dabbe @OutsmartYourShelf You're welcome! I'm so glad you came on this journey with us! 💛💜🧡 6d
AnneCecilie I loved this one as well. Actually the part I remembered best from my first read was the middle part. 6d
dabbe @AnneCecilie For me, it was the Boleyn story I remembered the most the second time around. 🧡💜💛 (edited) 6d
AnneCecilie I had completely forgotten that and why Shardlake was in Norwich to begin with. 6d
lil1inblue This was probably my least favorite, which was disappointing because the historical piece was probably the most interesting to me of all the books. I did a lot of internet reading about Kett's rebellion. But I loathed the mystery, and the pacing was torturously slow for me. 6d
Mollyanna I too think it was a bit long. The perspective on Samson‘s frame of mind is helpful. I, too, did not know about the Kett rebellion. I may have to go and do some independent research on it. This was a great readathon @dabbe Thank you so much for hosting and putting together these questions. 6d
kwmg40 This was indeed a very long book but I didn't find it a slog. I enjoyed all of it and was sad when I was nearing the end, knowing that there would be no more Shardlake stories. 5d
dabbe @lil1inblue As a second read, I couldn't agree more. This one was a major slog for me. He tried to do way too much. 🧡💜💛 (edited) 21h
dabbe @Mollyanna Aww, thank you! It was fun to revisit these with all of you wonderful Shardlakians! 🧡💜💛 21h
dabbe @kwmg40 Glad you felt this way. I did the first time I read it, so I don't know why I felt so weary with this last one this time around. Maybe the rebellion hit a little too close to home--I'm so weary about what's going on in this country in just 9 months. 🧡💜💛 21h
kwmg40 @dabbe I can understand how you feel. When reading the earlier books, I couldn't help thinking that some of our current world leaders seem awfully like Henry VIII. Hugs to all my American friends. ❤ ❤ ❤ 18h

#ShardlakiansBuddyRead @dabbe I finally finished it. Man, I found this book long. I felt sorry for most of the people in this era. I particularly like the end of the book, where the writer explains what really happened and why. As history goes, I don't think I would want to live here at this time, 1540. King Edward was way too young to rule. Therefore, other idiots did so. I felt bad for women in this era as well. @TheAromaofBooks #ISpyBingo

I had quite a bit of driving yesterday to & from family events, so I listened to the last several chapters of this book. This one felt slower than some of the others in the series, but the combination of Shardlake, Nicholas, & Barak gave a great variety of perspectives. I found the English history of the rebellions fascinating while also frustrating. I appreciated the additional historical notes after the story.

Hi, Shardlakians~
Full disclosure here. I am wwwaaaayyyy far behind! 🤪 I don't know if I'll be finished by 9/30 TBH. I have three options:
1. Still discuss on 9/30--thought the questions might be more open-ended.
2. Postpone discussion until 10/30 (not on Halloween, of course).
3. Finish on your own with no discussion unless you post your own review.
Where are you? What do you want to do? Comment below when you can. 💛💜🧡

lil1inblue I'm at on Chapter 54 - 61%. I have to say, this one is a super slow read for me compared to the previous books. I'm good with postponing until October or reading at our own pace and discussing in comments on reviews. 2mo
LiseWorks Well I'm at chapter 52-59%. I agree it's a slow read, but I'm enjoying the book. I'm also good at postponing and reading at my own pace and discussing reviews. 2mo
Mollyanna I agree. This one is a little slower, but still very good. I am also okay with postponing the discussion to October 30. 2mo
See All 10 Comments
OutsmartYourShelf Oct is usually pretty much booked up with Halloween readathons for me so I‘ll probably finish reading this one in Sept, but I‘m ok with waiting until Oct for the discussion. 2mo
Karisimo I'm starting the audiobook today! But I'm sure I can finish by Sept 30. 2mo
kwmg40 I've finished, but I don't mind waiting until end of October to discuss. I really tried hard to pace myself to read this over 3 months. However, despite the slow start, I couldn't stop reading once I reached the halfway point and just kept going! I'm currently reading Sansom's essay about reimagining the rebellion that's at the end of my edition. 2mo
Daisey I downloaded the audio and got caught up for August with a lot of listening this weekend, so I should now finish on schedule. I‘m fine with waiting longer to discuss though. 2mo
Librarybelle I am so way behind in the series it‘s not funny. Any delays in a final discussion just *may* get me one step closer to the final book. But, I have my doubts. 😂 2mo
AnneCecilie I‘ll probably finish on time, but discussion in October works fine for me 2mo

I haven‘t made as much reading time for this book as hoped, so I gave in and downloaded the audio. It‘s fine, but when I‘ve read books by an author before, a perfectly good narrator just doesn‘t sound right in my head. I‘m finally far enough in that I‘m getting adjusted and into the story. I started Part 2 today, and it‘s good to see Shardlake meet Barak again.

The #ShardlakeBR is beginning our LAST book in the series. I can't believe it! We'll be on the merry ol' island of England surrounded by water on all sides! It looks like a lot of time will be spent in the Northfolk area, bordering the North Sea on the east. The North Sea reminds me of Wart (King Arthur) learning to fly as a goose (thanks to Merlyn's magic) over the North Sea with Lyo-Lyok. Love that book! 🌊

Excellent discussion yesterday, Shardlakians! We now approach the last book in the series: TOMBLAND. And it is a major chunkster: 86 chapters and close to 900 pages! That's why we'll read it in three parts; then, the length will be pretty close to what we've been doing all along. Happy reading!

This is C.J. Sansom's last Shardlake novel, so I read it with a heavy heart to begin with. As always there is a mystery involving a distant relative of Anne “Beheaded“ Boleyn, but 80% of the novel (the whole middle part) deals with Kett's Rebellion, a farmers' rebellion in Norfolk (Tombland to be exact) against the upper classes. The history was riveting and (again) had me looking up a bunch of stuff. I'll miss Shardlake's medieval adventures.

At 800p if I'd nodded off in bed rdg this h/back it might have knocked me out but it was worth (albeit it cd have lost 100 pages or so) the heavy lifting. Shardlake is a fave character + here in the reign of Edward VI he is asked by Elizabeth to go to Norwich where her distant relative faces a murder charge. He is drawn into a rebellion (true event) as enclosures are resisted with force. V good story + fascinating history, this is a great series

Andrew65 Love this series. 3y
Ruthiella I still have this one left to read. I‘m looking for read-alike historical mysteries, if you have any suggestions! 😃 I‘m considering The Seeker by S.G. MacLean but haven‘t tried it yet. 3y
andrew61 @Ruthiella I don't read a lot of historical fiction Ruth and I'd suggest of you were going to try this series start at the beginning with 3y
andrew61 @Ruthiella but one book I read years ago and after this book decided to reread would be a book set around the English civil war 3y
Ruthiella I‘ve already read all the Shardlake books EXCEPT Tombstone. 😂 I‘ve also read An Instance of the Fingerpost and loved it. So you certainly aren‘t steering me in the wrong direction… (edited) 3y

I really enjoy the Mathew Shardlake books, and recommend Tombland to you. Set in 1549, when King Edward VI, at eleven years old ruled through his Regent, Edward Seymour, (Sommerset). Shardlake, Jack Barak and Nicholas Overton have been tasked by Elizabeth with the defense of a distant kinsman accused of murder. Set during the Kett rebellion the book offers excellent history and wonderful characterizations. A long book, but very worth reading.

I have caught up to the series and there‘s an emptiness I didn‘t expect! Will have to check out his other novels.

This one involves a Boleyn relative being murdered mystery amongst Robert Kett‘s rebellion in Norwich, England (which I had never heard of :( )

This is Tombland Alley in Norwich, England, where this book was set during Elizabethan times.

Check out the wonky window on the building!

This series of doorstop sized books represents historical fiction at its finest.

It‘s already the 8th of January and I‘ve just now finished my first read of 2021, but no wonder—this brick of a book is 800+ pages! This is the 7th of the Matthew Shardlake series and it is another impeccably researched and beautifully told story. An extremely satisfying start to my reading year!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This most recent novel in the Shardlake series is so good!

I was equal parts intrigued, infuriated, and educated.
This takes place during Edward VI‘s reign, in 1549 during the rebellions, at one of the larger camps in Norwich. There were previous characters revisited, new ones introduced, and some truly shocking passages. I also really enjoyed the murder mystery running through the book, and the historical essay at the end :)

Having a chilled morning with some #CrimeADay

I do really like the Shardlake books, including the political and religious debates! The crime element is always well done too. So far Shardlake has spoken with someone who is about to stand trial for the murder of his wife. But although evidence is stacked against him, it is a very unlikely scenario that he would be the killer. But I can never work out who it will be!

So I have chosen a book for #CrimeADay

This is a mammoth novel (part of the Shardlake series) which I borrowed from my uncle. So I thought it would be a good place to start!
86 chapters, so may take a while if I only read a chapter a day, but we will see how I get on. Perhaps I will read more than one chapter on a weekend :)

AkashaVampie Wow that's alot of chapters. Good luck sweetie 5y
ElizaMarie I totally didn‘t follow the “chapter” rule! It was more of an “at least a chapter” a day for me :) enjoy! 5y

I love the Shardlake series, and this latest installment is fantastic. It‘s 1549 and Shardlake is asked by Lady Elisabeth to look into a criminal case against a distant relative of hers. This leads Shardlake to Norwich at the brink of the rebellion against the gentry.

Sansom writes so that you‘re right there where everything happens and makes forgotten historic events come alive, like The Kett rebellion.

I can‘t wait for next installment.

The book was long (881 pgs.) but was a very interesting read. 1549. Two years after the death of Henry VIII and the economy in collapse, inflation rages and the peasantry are rebelling. Shardlake is in the service of Henry's daughter, Lady Elizabeth. John Boleyn has been arrested for killing his wife. Shardlake is trying to prove his innocence. I look forward to the next book and recommend this series to those who love Historical Mysteries.
