I said this was a love letter to NYC & The 80‘s but honestly, it‘s a love letter to Adam Yauch. It‘s obvious on every page how much he is missed. A fabulous tribute to a talented musician,visionary,creative genius and beloved friend. While the audio is fantastic, I‘m sure the print book is probably even better for all the photos and mementos.

This book is fucking hilarious!!! I‘m dying!! Wanda Sykes is reading this one essay that has me doubled over. Part love letter to NYC, part love letter to the 80‘s and a whole lot of Beastie Boys humor. LOVING this audio!!!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This was fun! I was/am a casual Beastie Boys fan—had/listened to a couple of albums and love a handful of their songs, but don‘t know all of their music or everything about them. This was a great retrospective series of essays that tell their story and also make one big love letter to Adam Yauch. The audio version has a deep bench of guest narrators. Some of the essays got a little esoteric, but overall it was great!

“You ask your mom please but she still says “NO”...” If you know, you know. On audio, and loving it so far.

1. My husband is sitting on the couch reading the tagged book as I type! He trends towards nonfiction & biographies while I'm more of a fiction girl myself 😂 But the BEST part about this man is his willingness to build bookshelves!!! Such a winner!
2. I grew up in a reading family. I'm definitely the most into the social/blog aspect of it, but my parents, grandparents, & most of my siblings also love reading.

I‘ve been at this book on and off for a year and a half- I would read a part listen to the album that had come out I. The era they were talking about... great experience. Then I found the Spotify playlist- F***ing awesome! The only sadness is that you know how it ends... grrrr real life! Robs us of the genius we are lucky enough to have on vinyl... R.I.P. the genius of the BEASTIE BOYS AND BEASTIE GIRLS.

As a Beastie Boys fan I loved this book. Much of it is stories from the road, recording sessions, and growing up in NYC. If you‘re just a casual fan of the group, I think you‘ll like it also.

I listened to this with my husband. I debated between 2 and 3 stars mainly because this is very technical. The book is almost an ode to NYC as much as it‘s their story. Between the descriptions of places in NYC and the endless lists of bands, songs, and equipment that I don‘t know much about, it was tedious at times. However, I think that technicality is part of the beauty of the book. I really felt their love for each other, NYC, and music.

Ohhhhh, to be a 16 year old in NYC in 1980 ... {sigh} ...
Listening to this right now, & two things:
1. Listen to it - they have guest narrators - it‘s awesome
2. It‘s hard to believe, and especially hard now, that anyone ever had as much freedom as kids in NYC in the 80s did.

Lots of 1980s and NYC references. enjoyable at times, but overwhelming too. incessant name dropping of artists and clubs. neat when I recognized the groups, but the vast majority were unknown to me, so it got to be hard to follow. I was going to keep plugging along (I rarely don‘t finish a book), but I had loaned this one on Kindle. When my rental ended, I decided that I‘d rather start a new book. Let me know what you think!

This behemoth, chock full of essays, photos, interviews, and playlists, increased my love for Beastie Boys even more! Now I have a bunch of new music to check out! At some point I might try the audiobook too.

Loved, Loved, LOVED, this! Only thing missing was seeing the band through Yauch, but the boys definitely represented him in spirit.

I really took my time listening to this one and it was amazing and I may buy a physical copy of it to.

I came upon this autobiography in multiple „BEST OF 2018“ lists and seeing the stellar audiobook cast couldn‘t resist. I‘ve never been a real fan, knew only the hits, but now having gotten to know the guys better I know my first impression was perfectly right: they really ARE that cool! If you‘re interested in pop culture, NYC in the 80s and creative people and the history of a true friendship - this is definitely a good listen. RIP Adam Yauch! ✊

Listening to Jarvis Cocker read bits like “can I hit that guy with this Scotch egg?” is just making my day.

Finished up my shawl while listening to this fun #audiobook. It will probably look better after blocking! Now to figure out if I should do a simple SC (single crochet) border like the pattern suggests ... what do you think?

It‘s fun listening to them talk about tapes and how once your tape gets stuck, “taking it out was like pulling 60 minutes of wet fettuccine out of a dog‘s mouth. It was as though the tape and tape deck were mad at you for being a careless and impatient teenager.”
We watched Guardians of the Galaxy with the kids over the weekend and when I had to explain what tapes and Walkman. So it was nice #bookserendipity to hear about tapes!

Working through this slowly- some stories every couple of days- it‘s a beautiful walk in the fields of memory- though my experience was pretty small town, I‘d come to love these guys with Ill Communication and knight them geniuses when I retroactively heard Paul‘s Boutique. Still reading...

This was a fun one! I loved all the cameo readers #audible. You get the idea that these boys stayed true to each other and never took themselves too seriously. Intro and final chapter was a brother tribute and all love. It‘s a book for music lovers and music maker!

My hold finally came through! Heard the audio version of this is great.

I've been on the waiting list for this one for so long, and I'm so excited that it's finally my turn to check it out!!

I enjoyed it. Learning how they came together and all the stories. If you are a music or Beastie boys fan you will enjoy!

Started this book.

I had an 11 hour flight home from London yesterday & was thrilled that my library hold came up. There are so many guest narrators, tender stories, hilarious antics & good vibes that I remembered what it was like to love this band. I had the privilege of being at some secret shows where they played & attended the Tibetan Freedom Concert and the infamous after party at The Fairmont in SF. So this book was a lovely walk down memory lane. RIP- Yauch

Favorite read of 2018. I borrowed it from the library. Now, I must purchase it because there is much music to research.

Luc Sante's essay "Beastie Revolution" from the "Beastie Boys Book" is one of the most fantastic pieces of cultural criticism I have read in ages. A phantasmagoric portrait of late 70s/early 80s NYC: the birth of hip hop, punk, and new wave. A vibrant snapshot of city life and the art scene that flourished amidst the rubble of a decadent and decaying urban landscape. So amazing. This book is marvelous.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I loved this Beastie Boys history lesson! The audiobook is sooo pleasing to the ear. In addition to Diamond & Horovitz, there‘s a full cast of narrators that will blow your damned mind. The essays & anecdotes are well-written, thoughtful, & often humorous. This collection takes the music memoir to a whole new level. On top of that, it‘s a beautiful homage to Adam Yauch. This is one of my top reads of 2018! 👇🏻
