BLACK PANTHER: TALES OF WAKANDA | Tananarive Due, Nikki Giovanni, Cadwell Turnbull, Sheree Thomas
post image

I listened to some more of the tagged anthology while I made a couple freezer meals to use up some beef. It‘s… not what I hoped for. A third of the way through, the majority of the contributors are deeply concerned with using Wakanda to discuss America. I can understand that impulse, and the value in it, and I appreciate the ways they also interrogate Wakanda‘s isolationism, but—yeah. I‘d prefer more chances to explore WAKANDA. #audiocooking

The Queen's Gambit | Walter Tevis
post image

Did some #audiocooking. I‘m a bit divided on THE QUEEN‘S GAMBIT. I find it fascinating as a sports story and it‘s been interesting to see how it compares to the show, but I‘m not a fan of Walter Tevis‘s contraction-free narrative. (He does use contractions in his dialogue.) It‘s choppy and stilted to my ear, and the narrator‘s delivery doesn‘t help. I think maybe she and I both have the wrong accent for what Tevis hears in his head as he writes.

Blood Like Magic | Liselle Sambury
post image

It felt appropriate to do some #audiocooking while I sank into a book about a talented teenage cook. BLOOD LIKE MAGIC starts off with some major infodumping, but after last night‘s arancini-making session and a couple other tasks today, I‘ve made it far enough in that I‘m invested in the characters and their world. I loveloveLOVE how trans-inclusive Sambury‘s near-future Canada is, too.

It's Friday and you know what that means? Yup...ANOTHER freaking snowstorm. I really don't know where we are going to put it all at this point. 😕 A little bit of snow day comfort food is definitely in order today so chicken stew it is!! 😋

Pickpick

The second book was just as good as the first. As a youth librarian, I don‘t often continue with series as there is always so much else to read, but this one 🧡🧡🧡 The ending oof and then oof again 💔💔 I‘m eagerly awaiting book three this fall. #audiocooking

1. I made butternut squash soup! Flavour‘s great (I used coconut milk and green curry paste), but it needs another trip through the blender before my next bowl.

2. I‘m a fair ways into BOMBSHELL, my third #NewYearWhoDis book! I really like the story, but I‘m glad I have it on audio because there‘s something about Sarah MacLean‘s prose that doesn‘t quite click for me. I recognize the technical skill, but I find it a little… breathy? #audiocooking

xicanti (I should note I‘ve read MacLean before. Last time, I ended up bailing because of the prose style issue. [It was me, not her.] This time, I‘ll definitely finish.) 9mo
Tamra Yum! Do you have a recipe to share? 9mo
xicanti @Tamra I made it up as I went along, but it started with a few minced green onions, salt, a bag of frozen squash, two cups of water, and maybe 1-1.5 tbsp of curry paste. (I finished the jar.) I brought it to the boil, let it bubble away for a few minutes, then puréed it with a hand blender and added a cup of coconut milk. 9mo
Tamra @xicanti easy peasy! Thank you! 9mo
