My 11 year old is reading this for one of his novel study books and it is beautifully written. It tells the story of a girl who moves from Syria go Cincinnati and her experiences of moving to the states, her worries about her family back home, and her Muslim identity. It felt very real and poignant.

I loved this book. A story of friendships I found it to be really beautiful. I found all the characters really relatable and the storyline engrossing even though I have no interest in gaming and have never played video games beyond Tetris and Mario brothers. Also any book set in boston in the late 1990s/early 2000s fills with me nostalgia picturing the T station, the science center, and all the stores mentioned in Harvard Square.

AmyK1 I‘m reading this right now for book club and liking it so far 5d

A soft pick for me. I expected to love this and went in thinking it would be more along the lines of A Secret History. it definitely captured Bodie and society‘s obsession with murdered and missing women but it didn‘t quite all gel for me. It did become a page-turner but not until after the 50% mark. I did like the boarding school memories and insights into those social dynamics.

4.5. I love the Lucy Barton books and pretty much everything Elizabeth Strout writes. She is able to capture the reality of the small moments that make up life is in this way I find really moving. I think this book is probably really divisive. It has no traditional plot and is instead a series of observations and anecdotes about life in NYC as a young journalist in the 1970s. Some of the descriptions of her experiences are funny, others quite shocking, and most quite insightful. One of my favorites was her description of lawyers having found the strongest “or” in the English language in the phrase “well knew or should have known.”

Blaire I was uncertain about the book until near the end where she describes the limited number of plots that exist in the world and kind of pulls together a lot of the anecdotes. So a slow read and really different. 4w
Ruthiella Great review! I have a copy but had real trouble getting a handle on it. I need to try it again with the right mindset. 👍 4w
Blaire @Ruthiella thanks! It‘s slow for a short book but I tried to treat as little journal entries and glimpses into someone‘s life and not as a book per se and then I could appreciate it much more. 4w

3.5 stars. She notes at the beginning that her sample is skewed. While she does talk to Lgbtq teens and Black and Hispanic teens it is primarily focused on white college bound kids from the upper middle class. Helpful to see teenagers perspectives on masculinity, sex, and how they view society‘s expectations of them.

Blaire Also it seemed clear that if they discussed these things in depth with anyone it was with their moms but that they wanted their dads to be more open about the complexity of love and sex and relationships. 1mo

I loved this book. I listened to it and the narration really added to the rhythm of the book. 18 year old middle sister stands out in her community for many things, among them, reading while walking. Her descriptions of life during “the troubles” in Ireland captured the constant feeling of being watched and on alert and aware of even minute things are impacted by the conflict. The structure of the sentences was beautiful and surprising.

Damon‘s story of growing up in Lee County, VA had me hooked from the beginning. Kingsolver had empathy for each of the characters and drew them as whole people. she examines what has made Appalachians vulnerable to the ravages of pills and hopelessness a broken social services system, and tells a humane story of the people here. The language in the book was so beautiful. Loved it all but especially Angus and Annie and Mr Armstrong.

Lots of feelings about this one. A near future dystopia where CPS is in overdrive and sends mothers to a reeducation camp where they must learn to be good mothers to robot dolls before their children can be returned to them. Felt a bit long in the middle and sometimes a touch too over the top, but made me think and brought me to tears close to the end.

1st book of 2023. Look at why there is resistance to use of property destruction and other tactics in the climate movement and whether such tactics are more effective than non-violence and whether they are accepted in the climate space. Not sure I quite buy the argument fully but did buy the urgency of climate change and the need for action. I did like the focus on hope and working for change as opposed to doing nothing because “we‘re doomed.”

SamAnne Will need to check it out. Just finished the March trilogy about John Lewis and the civil rights movement, which talks a lot about differences of opinion on strategy, non-violent activism vs more active protests. There certainly is more than one wilderness area in Oregon that wouldn‘t exist if people hadn‘t chained themselves to trees, pulled up survey stakes and wrecked bulldozers. My own work was in legal and outreach channels. (edited) 3mo
Blaire @SamAnne he did talk a lot about both together. I think he would consider chaining to the trees non-violent but wrecking bulldozers the property destruction. he seemed to argue that kind of action isn‘t acceptable in the climate movement in America but I‘ve seen it as you‘ve described and in mountain top removal protests here in Wv with people living in trees and blocking roads (though he would put these in the non-violent group). 3mo
Blaire @SamAnne his argument being climate is as urgent as civil rights and perhaps more extreme actions should be used more broadly (edited) 3mo
SamAnne @Blaire definitely stacked. 3mo
Reggie There is this book by Kim Stanley Robinson that sticks in my mind because in there, a heat dome settles over India and kills millions of people. And as long as it isn‘t happening to them, “richer” countries aren‘t gonna do anyone about it. Enter the Children of Kali who are climate terrorists/activists(?) and you kind of wonder what will it take for us to get serious about global warming. Stacked. 3mo

I almost never bail on a book but I couldn‘t get through this one. I know a lot of people love the disc world books…but at least this first one was not for me. I‘ve been told they can be read out of order but I have a hard time not starting at the beginning. Any recs on one I might like more?

thegirlwiththelibrarybag Think of it less like reading them out of order and more like reading books (some of them little series themselves) set within the same universe. I also started with this one and struggled - but I really enjoyed The City Watch books which start with Guards! Guards! I also really enjoyed the miniseries of Going Postal - although I haven‘t yet read the book it‘s based on. 8mo

Graywacke I find I‘m unusual in liking this first messy book. I just love the luggage and gawking at how annoying Twoflower is. So that hinders any advice I can give. But they do get better from here because he plots much much better. And he gets a little easier to follow as he dries up his unseen university humor (a play on the Latin intellectual underground of Europe‘s Enlightenment under monarchic censorship era.) 8mo

Blaire @Graywacke thanks! I wasn‘t sure what I was getting into when I started and got about 1/3 of the way through and decided this wasn‘t the one for me. 8mo
Graywacke @Blaire understand. He was of a mindset. You might try a later book. His best were probably published 1990-1995. His mindset doesn‘t change, but he creates several lovable characters. (As opposed to horrible Twoflower and sadly pathetic Rincewind - both of whom I adore ☺️) 8mo

I have enjoyed the fun and light romances in this series. Each relationship centers consent and features characters who are diverse in looks, body types, etc. Multiple characters have disabilities or are not neurotypical. Like these as palate cleansers - predictable in the you know a happy ending is in sight way - but that‘s what I‘m looking for in this kind of book.

I really liked this book though some part of it was nostalgia and familiarity. Her descriptions of Boston and particularly the Cambridge/Somerville area in the late 90s are spot on. I kept realizing, I‘ve ridden that bus, been to that restaurant, walked through that building. It felt both very specific to that time and place but also a great encapsulation of the feeling of being a college freshman.

Blaire @Cathythoughts thanks! I think it‘s a book that you either really feel or really hate. Its definitely a deep dive back into the emotional state of being in college. 9mo

I appreciated this book‘s approach to making your home functional instead of spotless and rhythms over routines. A cleaning book that actually contemplates busy lives, anxiety, and being overwhelmed. Took away some helpful tips about prioritizing and tidying and the comfort that it‘s ok to give yourself a break.

Cathythoughts Definitely stacking. I need a few tips like that 👍🏻😁 9mo

In the wake of all the upsetting news this week I need a book to take me away and not keep me up at night. This was perfect. It captured the beauty of the all the national parks and the stories behind them as well as a good road trip telling.

EvieBee I‘ve been doing the same; getting back to nature in my reading and real life. 💕🤗 10mo

It‘s been forever since I‘ve posted…reading this for my office book club and definitely recommend as an easy read to understand the constitution and how it‘s principles and interpretation have impacted Black people. Written with humour and in a way you don‘t need to be a lawyer to get (even tho I am a lawyer).

Cathythoughts It is ages sinse you posted ! I was only wondering about you the other day. Hi 👋🏻, I hope all is well. 11mo
Blaire @Cathythoughts I was thinking of you too…it‘s one of the things that prompted me to get back on litsy. I am doing well. Hope you are too. Hopefully I‘ll start being more active on here again. 11mo
