Beastie Boys Book | Michael Diamond, Adam Horovitz

Pickpick

Here's a big ol book with a story to tell
About three bad brothers you know so well
It started way back in history (the 80's kids!)
With Adrock, M.C.A. and Mike D.
Sadly one of them is gone, but the other two
Put this giant book out just for you
So get off your butt and go pick up a copy
Sorry about these rhymes, they're a little sloppy.

Tucumcari | Patrick Parks
post image
Pickpick

A throwback to the great works of Kurt Vonnegut, Tucumcari tells the story of a man trying to put the pieces of his life together as he decides to visit his wife. Not all is as it seems of course. Parks uses the backdrops of nuclear war, loneliness, and illusion of starting over to give his protagonist a vision hope he probably doesn't want. Books like this don't come around often in 2018. Find it where you can.

Maybe not for everyone, Homo Deus makes the case for mankind's next evolution into the information age. Harari points out that technology has grown at such a rate that it has moved mankind towards it's next phase, one that may not easily separate us from the inevitable merging of man and machine. Don't worry it isn't a horror story but one that points to the positive outcomes that may very well outstrip the negatives.

How come we tend to not learn the history of the greatest inventions of our lifetimes? I guess some of us think it's all magic. The Innovators tells the story the people who got us to stare at our smart phones and how much was gained, lost, and sacrificed for us to get here. Very interesting and as with any of Isaacson's biographies very entertaining.

The Lives of Tao | Wesley Chu

Another random grab off the library shelf. This book starts off on the run and doesn't really stop until the end. Written with a more cinematic than a literary, it's not a bad book and it does move fast for 457 pages.

Night Driver | Ronald Colby

Pickpick

A book decades in the making, Night Driver is the story of a man driven by revenge after the death if his wife. Told with a modern noir feel, the book rushes along with feverish energy following Nick as he hunts for the killers working within the confines of a night time taxi driver. Though it borrows elements from the movie Taxi Driver, you would be mistaken to think this LA based story is a copy. Pretty good stuff.

City of Thieves: A Novel | David Benioff

I chose this book because the cover just stood out on the shelf. Good call because it was a great read. The story of an impossible mission by two impossible men, during the impossible time of the Seige of Leningrad. Funny, heartwarming, and with just enough action. Can't endorse it enough.

Drugs are bad, mmkay? What makes great art? Lots of people telling you that the art is great. Everyone who surrounded Jean-Michel used him for his greatness while he used them to achieve it. In the end he was dead at 28 with pockets stuffed with cash and veins stuffed with heroin. At least everyone else got rich at auction. A sad tale but a reminder of America and how it works against the talented.

Just Kids | Patti Smith
Pickpick

I had spent my whole life listening to her music and yet never thought of her books. Now after reading two of them I wondered how ever I missed out on the rest of Patti's brilliance all this time. The story is a journey that doesn't just bring you into the young lives of Patti Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe it makes you part of their circle...part if their lives. There I was, last page, fighting back the tears.

A few weeks ago I picked up the 3 volume Graphic Canon ( http://www.russkick.com/graphic-canon/#top ) which are huge collections of the world's greatest literature reinterpreted by some of the best graphic artists around. It's great. Check it out sometime. I made note of some of the more interesting titles I was unfamiliar with and started to check them out. This one is The Prophet, which is a classic but kinda dry. Big thumbs up for the Canon!
