[ has entered the chat]

It‘s the year 2000 and Agnes is selling an antique apple peeler on QueerList.org. She can‘t make rent, her missive around the history of the peeler catches the attention of Zoe.

A fervent IM communication starts, a relationship forms. What starts as a flirtatious game turns into a perverse Master/Slave scenario, with Zoe pushing Agnes beyond her limits

What have you done today to deserve your eyes?

The Sanatorium | Sarah Pearse

March Round Up Part 3: After a mostly lackluster bunch of Reese picks I was surprised by how much I loved The Sanatorium. Girl in 6E was not my usual bag but I really enjoyed it, and The Girls Are All So Nice Here was a crazy cruel campus novel. Maniac is a mess so skip that and read the wiki on the Bath Massacre instead.

March Round Up Part 2: another really solid group of reads ranging from 3-4 stars except for The Serpent‘s Skin which was impossibly slow. It‘s one of the most boring books I have read in awhile.

February Round Up 2: I ended up reading so many cannibalism books this month but the one that‘s the most memorable is Tender is the Flesh. If you want to feel stressed out beyond belief check out The Savage Instinct when it comes out.

Moss is so good at writing the hypnotic nature of ennui. This didn‘t work as well for me as Ghost Wall but it‘s a short character study.

The family drama that turns into a chaotic cannibalistic bloodbath is a lot of fun. Jennings is so good at writing familial relationships that the surprise ending hits really hard. I do have a few concerns that the twist doesn‘t entirely work, but it‘s a great read either way.

vivastory I recently read her story in Worst Laid Plans. I really liked it 3y
Godpants @vivastory I‘ve been meaning to check out that collection! I‘ve also seen people raving about her splatter western Red Station so I‘ll probably get a copy of that soon. 3y

I haven‘t read a whole lot of King as an adult. Gerald‘s Game is one that I‘ve seen many of my favorite authors and book pals say is their top King, so I‘m going to give it a try. Perfect timing that my hold came in time for #horrorin24

After my last cannibalism foray left a bad taste in my mouth (SORRY) I am pleased to say that this one blew me away. The almost clinical descriptions of absolute horror really stuck with me. Incredible book.

Well. I didn‘t like this. It wasn‘t the extreme horror elements it was the actual writing. It‘s super tedious and repetitious to the point where any of the shocking events are tamped down because they‘re super predictable. Or maybe I‘m just really gross? Anyways. I can‘t recommend it.

I bought this last month since it was so well liked on bookstagram. I saved it for a read along that started today (Happy Vday Pals!) so I‘ve now unintentionally read 3 cannibalism books this week. 🤷‍♀️ oops!

After an incident in New York that expelled her from the theatre world, Cass is ready to reset in LA. She‘s given an opportunity to be someone else, Cath, while working with a neighbour on a “feminist Fight Club for girls.” While living as her new gentler self, she discovers the layered lives we all present. Really great stuff.

I‘ve been wanting to read this book for awhile now, and decided to save it for Women in Horror month. Has anyone else checked this one out?

vivastory Yeah...it sticks with you. I didn't like it quite as much as others, I think it felt a bit underdeveloped, but I also didn't want to spend anymore time in that world. 😂 3y

Godpants @TheLibrarian this is the second book this month with cannibalism in it. I did not intentionally pick this theme, lol. 3y
Godpants @BarbaraBB haha, it‘s always a complicated feeling loving “disgusting” books isn‘t it. 3y

I‘m reading this as part of the Queens of Horror book club. I‘ll be honest, so far it‘s pretty disgusting and I feel like the writing is a little tedious. I‘m a huge horror fan but I sometimes find “extreme” horror can be a little lame.

This was a really interesting story about immortality. I did struggle with Dawit/David‘s character and believing a 500 year old person would behave the way he did though. I‘d tried reading this before and had a hard time getting into it, but second time was the charm. Will probably check out the sequel at some point.

Overall I think that this is a solid thriller. However, there are a few sloppy logic jumps in order to push the narrative in a very set direction, which takes this one from a 4 to a 3.5. If you end up reading it let me know what you think. Thanks to St Martins and NetGalley for this ARC.

I really took my time with this one and it was so worth it. Super complex and dense. I followed the Baroness sequence which meant a lot of flipping around the book, which I think works really well with the nature of the story. It was unmooring to not know where the end is.

Soubhiville Wasn‘t this a neat book? Someday I‘m going to go back and read the baroness sequence, I read it cover to cover. 3y
Godpants @Soubhiville incredible. I‘m so curious what it would‘ve been like to read it straight through. I‘ll definitely have to go back and do that. 3y

Thank you Net Galley and Dutton Publishing for this ARC. Maybe my expectations were too high, but this didn‘t feel up to the quality I normally expect from Gardner. It‘s definitely a page turner but Frankie doesn‘t feel like a fully flushed out character and there are some weird plot decisions. The first chapter is also so bad that I almost quit before the story even really started.
