Things like crowns had a troublesome effect on clever folks; it was best to leave all the reigning to the kind of people whose eyebrows met in the middle.Three witches gathered on a lonely heath. A king cruelly murdered, his throne usurped by his ambitious cousin. A child heir and the crown of the kingdom, both missingeWitches don't have these kind of dynastic problems themselves e" in fact, they done(tm)t have leaders. Granny Weatherwax was the most highly-regarded of the leaders they didn't have. But even she found that meddling in royal politics was a lot more complicated than certain playwrights would have you believe, particularly when the blood on your hands just won't wash off and you're facing a future with knives in it...

When your outfit matches the book you're reading...
Even without knowing the play Macbeth, (though I caught the Hamlet flavour) this is still an awesome, fun read, with Terry Pratchett's uncanny ability to include solemn moments and important asides amongst the humour and shenanigans. It's that last reveal that got me! 🤭 Read the guest intro last and enjoyed it too!

This is my first Discworld novel, chosen on the recommendation of a friend, and I really loved it! I‘ll have to read more, for sure!

Catherine_Willoughby Still havent finished this one. I might have started further in the witches series..prefer the death collection (Hogfather being my favourite) . Best to read in order in the death series because you will understand more of the backstory of his "granddaughter" , some can be read in any order (stand alone books). Google for best order to read the different series in discworld. 1y

For me, this is the book where Pratchett established a concrete tone of voice and the series took off. The previous books showed hints of it but could not fully combine his humour with the plot.
In this one, he weaves in the subject of how words matter and how history is written.

“There are thousands of good reasons why magic doesn‘t rule the world. They‘re called witches and wizards, Magrat reflected...It was probably some wonderful organization on the part of Nature to protect itself. This was a slow burn at first, but by the end I found it to be one of the more amusing of the Discworld series. Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg are charmingly eccentric and the plot was just fun once it got going. A lot of the humor put me very much in the mind of Monty Python, and Shakespeare references are obviously always going to be my cup of tea. A fun time.

Mehso-so

Finished last night. Despite the entertaining toying with Macbeth, this book just doesn‘t work for a really long time. It took me two tries to get through that. At some point the scene shifts, or maybe it was just the orangutan librarian swinging life back in, anyway that charm unique to Discworld kicked in and suddenly it‘s a great book, or a great ending to a not-great read, or something. Thanks @jmofo for motivating my 2nd try.

jmofo @Graywacke that about sums it up. Since I don‘t know how good the writing gets, this is my second or third favorite of the six I have read so far. Is there a storyline you particularly like? 4y
Graywacke @jmofo more characters than story lines. I‘m oddly attached to Rincewind and annoying Twoflower and especially the luggage. But ahead is Vimes and crew and various assorted surprises. I think I just like the cacophony of it all. What are your two favorite so far? 4y
jmofo @Graywacke I felt that Equal Rites was the most coherent and I am fond of Weatherwax. I liked Sourcery because of the questions it raised more than the plot, characters, or resolution. I like the Rincewind and Twoflower show. I was resistant to the Librarian but I came to like him more in Sourcery. 4y
See All 13 Comments
Graywacke @jmofo “What‘s to be afraid of?” she managed.
“Us,” said Granny Weatherwax, smugly.
4y
Graywacke @jmofo another of my favorite lines in this book. I have a weird thing for The Light Fantastic. I read a long time ago though. What‘s next, by the way? 4y
jmofo @Graywacke 😄 I‘m not sure I have a couple books in the works but I‘ll likely take a little break from the Discworld for at least a couple weeks and go back to the loving arms of non-fiction. I am thinking of a reread of Infinite Jest... 4y
jmofo @Graywacke what are you looking to pick up? 4y
Graywacke @jmofo I have a plan for the year. Two rough themes. One is James Baldwin - I want to read all his 1960‘s works and maybe more. The other is a trail from the only existing complete Roman novel to the Renaissance with Dante, and various things in between, like Beowulf. But first I want to finish my 2018 plan - 🙂 Half of Gabriel Garcia Marquez‘s last book (I have 50 pages) and finish the New Testament. So, that is actually next. 4y
Graywacke @jmofo i‘m also a big nonfiction reader, a lot of memoirs, but factual stuff too. I‘ll probably mix that in, especially in audio - where I have no plan or goals and try to keep it that way. 4y
Graywacke @jmofo and Twelfth Night! I forgot, I need to pick up a waiting copy at the library and join the @Shakespearereadalong here in Litsy. That‘s been great fun. First act on Jan 6. 4y
jmofo @Graywacke Twelfth Night is fun! 4y
jmofo @graywacke James Baldwin is one of my heroes, he‘s amazing! 4y
Graywacke @jmofo I‘m really looking forward to Baldwin. I‘ve never read anything by him. 4y

RaimeyGallant lol, now I'll dream of raining crockery tonight. 4y
Liz_M Maybe not milk jugs, but sometimes giant helmets do, as in the tagged book 😁 4y
Graywacke @jmofo how are you like Pratchett on audio? I should add that the 1st audiobook I tried was by one of his and I got so confused i gave up and was turned off from audiobooks in general for a while. Eventually I figured out that there are easier authors on audio. I‘m a little hesitant to try him again on audio, though. (edited) 4y
Graywacke @RaimeyGallant that line, on the crockery, might be funnier than the one I quoted...and I only just snuck it in the bottom of the picture. Wishing you no roof-work anxiety, though... 4y

jmofo @Graywacke I‘m also digging catching the Shakespeare references and call backs. 4y
Graywacke Yes, when I catch them. I found myself smiling as Felmet was complaining about the trees. I‘m finding the book so far a bit of a miss. He‘s trying very hard, and it‘s smart and clever, but seems like some kind of plot-moving element is missing. Maybe just me. I‘m on page 60, meeting a dwarf named Hwel. 4y
