Witches are not by nature gregarious, and they certainly don't have leaders. Granny Weatherwax was the most highly-regarded of the leaders they didn't have. But even she found that meddling in royal politics was a lot more difficult than certain playwrights would have you believe... WYRD SISTERS IS THE SIXTH NOVEL IN THE DISCWORLD SEQUENCE -- THE FUNNIEST FANTASY SERIES EVER.

“There are thousands of good reasons why magic doesn‘t rule the world. They‘re called witches and wizards, Magrat reflected...It was probably some wonderful organization on the part of Nature to protect itself. This was a slow burn at first, but by the end I found it to be one of the more amusing of the Discworld series. Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg are charmingly eccentric and the plot was just fun once it got going. A lot of the humor put me very much in the mind of Monty Python, and Shakespeare references are obviously always going to be my cup of tea. A fun time.

Finished last night. Despite the entertaining toying with Macbeth, this book just doesn‘t work for a really long time. It took me two tries to get through that. At some point the scene shifts, or maybe it was just the orangutan librarian swinging life back in, anyway that charm unique to Discworld kicked in and suddenly it‘s a great book, or a great ending to a not-great read, or something. Thanks @jmofo for motivating my 2nd try.

jmofo @Graywacke that about sums it up. Since I don‘t know how good the writing gets, this is my second or third favorite of the six I have read so far. Is there a storyline you particularly like? 11mo
Graywacke @jmofo more characters than story lines. I‘m oddly attached to Rincewind and annoying Twoflower and especially the luggage. But ahead is Vimes and crew and various assorted surprises. I think I just like the cacophony of it all. What are your two favorite so far? 11mo
jmofo @Graywacke I felt that Equal Rites was the most coherent and I am fond of Weatherwax. I liked Sourcery because of the questions it raised more than the plot, characters, or resolution. I like the Rincewind and Twoflower show. I was resistant to the Librarian but I came to like him more in Sourcery. 11mo
See All 13 Comments
Graywacke @jmofo “What‘s to be afraid of?” she managed.
“Us,” said Granny Weatherwax, smugly.
11mo
Graywacke @jmofo another of my favorite lines in this book. I have a weird thing for The Light Fantastic. I read a long time ago though. What‘s next, by the way? 11mo
jmofo @Graywacke 😄 I‘m not sure I have a couple books in the works but I‘ll likely take a little break from the Discworld for at least a couple weeks and go back to the loving arms of non-fiction. I am thinking of a reread of Infinite Jest... 11mo
jmofo @Graywacke what are you looking to pick up? 11mo
Graywacke @jmofo I have a plan for the year. Two rough themes. One is James Baldwin - I want to read all his 1960‘s works and maybe more. The other is a trail from the only existing complete Roman novel to the Renaissance with Dante, and various things in between, like Beowulf. But first I want to finish my 2018 plan - 🙂 Half of Gabriel Garcia Marquez‘s last book (I have 50 pages) and finish the New Testament. So, that is actually next. 11mo
Graywacke @jmofo i‘m also a big nonfiction reader, a lot of memoirs, but factual stuff too. I‘ll probably mix that in, especially in audio - where I have no plan or goals and try to keep it that way. 11mo
Graywacke @jmofo and Twelfth Night! I forgot, I need to pick up a waiting copy at the library and join the @Shakespearereadalong here in Litsy. That‘s been great fun. First act on Jan 6. 11mo
jmofo @Graywacke Twelfth Night is fun! 11mo
jmofo @graywacke James Baldwin is one of my heroes, he‘s amazing! 11mo
Graywacke @jmofo I‘m really looking forward to Baldwin. I‘ve never read anything by him. 11mo

“But milk jugs don‘t just drop out of the sky,” said Tomjon, demonstrating the astonishing human art of denying the obvious.

It‘s taken almost two hundred pages, but the book does find that Discworld charm.

jmofo This is a bit of a call back to when the young witch lands on the jester. You‘re still a bit ahead of me. @Graywacke 11mo

RaimeyGallant lol, now I'll dream of raining crockery tonight. 11mo
Liz_M Maybe not milk jugs, but sometimes giant helmets do, as in the tagged book 😁 11mo
Graywacke @jmofo how are you like Pratchett on audio? I should add that the 1st audiobook I tried was by one of his and I got so confused i gave up and was turned off from audiobooks in general for a while. Eventually I figured out that there are easier authors on audio. I‘m a little hesitant to try him again on audio, though. (edited) 11mo
Graywacke @RaimeyGallant that line, on the crockery, might be funnier than the one I quoted...and I only just snuck it in the bottom of the picture. Wishing you no roof-work anxiety, though... 11mo
Graywacke @Liz_M I had to look up the title. I‘m really curious now. (I wouldn‘t put it past Pratchett to reference it, either) 11mo

jmofo @Graywacke I‘m also digging catching the Shakespeare references and call backs. 11mo
Graywacke Yes, when I catch them. I found myself smiling as Felmet was complaining about the trees. I‘m finding the book so far a bit of a miss. He‘s trying very hard, and it‘s smart and clever, but seems like some kind of plot-moving element is missing. Maybe just me. I‘m on page 60, meeting a dwarf named Hwel. 11mo

jmofo @Graywacke yup. Print order. I guess there are a few thoughts on what order means. 🤓 11mo

A brief "wossname" of the plot? Macbeth and the power of words. A very powerful story with plenty of witty, caustic humor.

The witches are still my favorite, and I love that Death got a turn on the stage as well. This was the perfect read for Oct. & for right after reading with the #ShakespeareReadAlong. Pratchett does such a great job at paying homage to and sending up both Shakespeare himself, his witches, and both the Disney & Grimm varieties, that all looks so effortless especially when combined with these wonderful characters.

#OokBOokClub

JazzFeathers I've read only a couple short stories about the witches and such a long time ago, but l remember enjoying it very much. I really need to find the time to read more Pratchett. Last thing l read was the first novel about the City Watch and l really liked that one too. 14mo

lahousewyfe How fun! The witches are my favorites! I'm always telling people they can avoid the rain if they just "walk between the drops." 1y
CarolynM Oh yes, it's an excellent result! But you'll have to learn to sing a The Hedgehog Song😂😂😂 1y
lahousewyfe Fun! 1y

I‘ve read precious little Terry Prachett so I‘m not sure if this a good result for me or not 😂

Have a go : https://bookriot.com/2018/09/07/quiz-which-discworld-witch-are-you?utm_source=Sa...

@TricksyTails @DGRachel - you may cut my fingers off for jumping in.

Dear #OokBOokClub Members, let's discuss Wyrd Sisters.

Don't forget to mark spoilers and please tag each other when replying.

DGRachel Not at all! I completely forgot about it because I‘m not reading the books. Would you like to take over hostessing duties? 🤞🏻 1y
julesG @DGRachel Sure! Though I still hope @TricksyTails is back soon. 1y
AnansiGirl Does anyone know the reason why TricksyTails been mia from litsy? (edited) 1y

julesG @AnansiGirl I don't know why she's been off Litsy. I could only speculate. @DGRachel do you know why? 1y
julesG No discussion? Well? I'm just going to say 'Esme Weatherwax', you just have to love her. 1y
gossamerchild The witches are definitely some of my favorites. This one is so fun! 1y
CSeydel Sadly I‘ve fallen behind ... still reading Equal Rites 😬 1y
julesG @DGRachel - I'm still willing to take over host duties. Shall we make it official and make an announcement through Litsyhappenings? 1y
julesG @CSeydel How do you like Er? 1y
julesG @gossamerchild the first scene is my favourite. I remember reciting it under my breath while my classmates read out the scene from Macbeth. 😁 1y
CSeydel I mean, the City Watch is still my favorite sequence. But this is my first read of the witches and I‘m enjoying it. I‘m struggling to get momentum, but that‘s external factors, not the books fault. Crazy time of yrar 1y
CSeydel (Who am I kidding, every time of year is crazy these days. I think it‘s a bad habit of biting off more than I can chew...) 1y
julesG @CSeydel Don't we all bite off more than we should? Looking forward to your thoughts on ER. 1y
Moray_Reads I love seeing the development of Granny Weatherwax from the not-quite-formed with in Equal Rites to the wonderful, formidable force she is in the later. One of my favourite things about the Witches sequence are TP's thoughts on stories, how they work, how we build the world around them and how they shape the world in turn 1y
DGRachel @julesG I will create a post tonight, after work, and tag Litsy Happenings. Thank you for doing this. I‘ll also email you the tags. Copy/paste is definitely going to be your friend for that! 1y
julesG @DGRachel 👍😘 1y
Laura317 I listened to this on Audible. I didn‘t care too much for this one as I thought I would. Might be that I didn‘t care for the narrator‘s voices for the witches. Anyway, I‘ve actually forgotten a lot of the story! I did like the ending. 1y
Soubhiville I love the witch books, and I have enjoyed seeing Granny and friends evolve as well. 1y
khooliha Love this book, love Granny Weatherwax. The coven's relationship is more fraught than I remembered? And I definitely attributed Magrat's super impressive door magic to the wrong witch. Sorry Magrat! It's a really cool bit of magic I have never forgotten! 1y
hgrimes I liked what I read but I‘ve been in such a reading slump that I never actually finished it. 😕Got about 3/4 of the way through, got too bogged down by work and decided to call it quits. But Granny rocks my world and I liked the Shakespeareaness. I hope I can return to it and finish the last leg before I forget where I left off. 1y
Moray_Reads @Laura317 I highly recommend Nigel Planer's narration, they're amazing. Salt he didn't finish the series and I don't care for those done by Stephen Briggs ☹️ 1y
Verity @Moray_Reads I‘m completely the opposite - I love the Briggs ones, but don‘t really like the Planer ones. I guess maybe because I heard Briggs ones before Planer? The transfer of the Planers on audible is terrible (or it was when I last listened too). 1y
julesG @Moray_Reads @Verity @Laura317 - I've listened to the audiobooks narrated by Celia Imrie, she does a really good job. 1y
Moray_Reads @Verity the sound quality is definitely quite poor on the earlier books. I listened to Planer first so maybe that explains it. I do find that Briggs settles into a certain cadence after a while, so that I can predict the intonation of his sentences and that drives me mad 😂 1y
Gezemice I have been also MIA and did not re-read this, but I have read this one twice as this is my favorite Discworld book and Granny Weatherwax is my favorite Discworld character. My favorite scene is tgem going to the theater. I also love Nanny Ogg and her hedgehog song... @khooliha @Soubhiville @julesG @Moray_Reads (edited) 1y
julesG @Gezemice It's my favourite DW novel, too. For the same reasons. 😁 1y
Gezemice @julesG Yay! Great to find another Granny fan 😊 1y
