Where Shadows Dance | C S Harris
post image

I picked up library books from my grandparents this afternoon and Nana told me mournfully that she thought this was the second last Sebastian St Cyr mystery… she was so happy when I told her that she wasn‘t even at the halfway point of the series yet…

😃 = her face

So far, it‘s been a drop everything to read / stay up past her bedtime series and I love that for her!

I‘m clearly in a mood because this was a rare miss for me in a series that is usually impeccable. Set in Paris as Napoleon escapes Elba, it brings closure to an ongoing storyline, while having fun with some historical figures like Vidocq. The issue I have here is that there‘s a lot of angst (understandable if you‘ve read the previous books),and Harris harps on it so much that it becomes repetitive & irritating. A low pick as it‘s still a St Cyr.

Harris builds this latest Sebastian St. Cyr mystery around the 1811 Radcliffe Highway Murders. As always, the mystery is well-crafted, the story fast-paced, the writing engaging, and the characters complex. I love all of the recurring characters (yes, even Jarvis, if only because it‘s so much fun to watch him and Sebastian needle each other). Even 16 books into the series, it hasn‘t gotten old or lost any quality.

On to the 15th book in the Sebastian St. Cyr series 🙂 I am also looking for a new series like this or like the Shardlake series. Let me know! Yesterday was an exciting day; I got accepted to a prestigious creative writing programme, and sent my first play to the first theatre. Here‘s🤞🏼 but I need to be realistic and wait for the coming “thanks, but no thanks” reply. Mixed feelings, mostly positive. #4Elisabeth #SeriesLove2025 #ShelfSweeper

This is another solid entry in the Sebastian St Cyr series. It‘s one of my favorite series for a reason. Harris does an excellent job of blending historical events, such as the Allied Sovereigns‘ visit to London, and historical entities like the evil East India Company, with her fictional characters and murders. There‘s also a fair amount of social commentary that sadly applies to modern day life and politics.

It‘s clouded up & the sun has fled, but I am enjoying a late afternoon read on my porch.
We visited a tulip farm in Preston, CT & had our pick of tulips.Ten with the price of admission. There were 3 of us so we left with thirty gorgeous blooms. They make me happy! 🌹🌹🌷🌷

I found this receipt tucked into the book I‘m starting today. I was confused by shipping charges from my local indie. I order online from them a lot but I drive the short distance to pick up my order when it‘s ready. Then I checked the date: April 12, 2020. It must have been one of the first orders I placed during lockdown once they were allowed to have one or two employees at a time working to keep their business afloat.

I fell behind on this series. I wish I hadn‘t, but this was the perfect book to break a slump. I love Harris‘s writing style, and it‘s great to be back in her version of Regency England with Sebastian and friends. The ending felt a bit rushed and too neat, but I can overlook that in favor of the joy I get from reading the rest. Too dark to be considered a cozy, but not so graphic as to be unbearably traumatizing. TW in comments.

DGRachel There‘s brief mention of rape and child sexual abuse, in addition to the murders/mutilations. It‘s not graphic, but if it‘s something you are really sensitive to, it does kind of come out of nowhere and could be triggering. 1y
robinb My thoughts on this series exactly. 😊 I just purchased the latest a few days ago and am looking forward to reading it. 1y
DGRachel @robinb I knew I was behind but I didn‘t realize just how far behind. 😭 I don‘t know what happened as this used to be one of the very few series I read the second the books came out. 1y
robinb @DGRachel same here! I fell behind by about 3-4 books and then had a St. Cyr marathon. 😄 1y
