Dark Matter: A Ghost Story | Michelle Paver
64 posts | 48 read | 121 to read
A terrifying 1930s ghost story set in the haunting wilderness of the far north. January 1937. Clouds of war are gathering over a fogbound London. Twenty-eight year old Jack is poor, lonely and desperate to change his life. So when he's offered the chance to join an Arctic expedition, he jumps at it. Spirits are high as the ship leaves Norway: five men and eight huskies, crossing the Barents Sea by the light of the midnight sun. At last they reach the remote, uninhabited bay where they will camp for the next year. Gruhuken. But the Arctic summer is brief. As night returns to claim the land, Jack feels a creeping unease. One by one, his companions are forced to leave. He faces a stark choice. Stay or go. Soon he will see the last of the sun, as the polar night engulfs the camp in months of darkness. Soon he will reach the point of no return - when the sea will freeze, making escape impossible. And Gruhuken is not uninhabited. Jack is not alone. Something walks there in the dark...

Sorry for the belatedness of this post; it‘s not a statement at all on the awesomeness of the #LitsyLove #winterswap package I got from the lovely @ImperfectCJ! Everything is wonderful and thoughtful, and I especially love the beautiful dragon journal and the paper cut card. The snacks I‘ve tried so far are delicious, too, and I‘m enjoying the mango tea now. 💖

Thanks very much, and also to our hosts, @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks and @TheBookHippie!

Horror as a genre is not something I‘ve read very often, so I think I may have expected too much from this in the “terrifying” category. However, it was a good read. I liked the diary entry format and enjoyed the descriptions of the artic (a place that fascinates me). And Isaak ❤️🐶

In January 1937, a group of young men set out on an Artic expedition but the remote, uninhabited bay where they set up camp has a sinister past...! 😟
This was brilliant! A cracking ghost story that just sucked me in! (I was snowed in alone once when I lived in the mountains in Italy; by the 3rd day I felt painfully lonely. And I‘m not a people person!) #scarathlon #ScaryScavengerHunt #teamstoker

This was a slow burner horror but boy, when it got going it was full of a menacing dread that won‘t let go. I‘ve always thought I‘d make a good hermit, as long as I had all my books & music but being a hermit in the arctic is another animal entirely. Especially if you have the misfortune of being left in a bay haunted by a seriously pissed off ghost! #ReadHarder2019 #AnEpistolaryNovel #Pop19 #SetInScandinavia #SomethingWickedFall

BekahB Yesssss! I love this book so much. I read this all in one night because I couldn‘t put it down. And then of course I couldn‘t sleep after finishing it. The perfect build of dread. 3mo

#RedRoseSeptember #day5 #HitTheNorth My next read is set the most north you can get & still be on the planet! It‘s 1937 and Jack has joined an expedition to the Arctic Circle. Leaving Norway by ship spirits are high, but the Arctic Summer is brief & ends up alone after his companions desert him. Soon, the sun goes down for months & the sea freezes and Jack is trapped. But alone, he‘s not. Something is waiting in the dark. #SomethingWickedFall

I had a great weekend relaxing with this atmospheric read. Ice, ghosts, huskies! 😍 However, it was unfortunately just a so-so novel for me... I can't get enough of this cover though. Thanks for a great round of #HorrorPost #ScreamsByMail team!
@scripturient This is already on its way back to you Stef, so you'll be able to read all our thoughts soon :)

Tamra I really enjoyed this one and has stuck with me. I didn‘t necessarily care for the end. A little too fantastical. Sometimes I think it‘s better to leave things lie with the imagination. 12mo
ephemeralwaltz @Tamra that's great! I felt like the creepy factor didn't really start until page 200 and by then I was frustrated with the plot. Also, I don't think narratives in the form of a journal are for me :/ I became annoyed with the narrative voice. The scenery inside my head was stunning though - a movie version would be fun! 12mo

Creepy little ghost story for All Hallows‘ Read. I‘m glad I read this on a bright autumn day and not a cold, dark winter‘s night! Cold and dark are like characters in this book. It‘s set in the Arctic, during the long lightless winter, one man alone, struggling to hold onto his sanity, haunted by the ghost of human cruelty. Recommended.

I LOVE this book. It terrified me, it‘s creepy, full of suspense & cleverly written. It‘s about being alone & knowing you‘re not; that feeling of something watching you from out in the darkness. Paver has an extraordinary talent of putting fear into words. I found myself constantly wondering when the scare would come. I don‘t think I‘d read this at night, I‘d definitely have to double check all the doors and windows before I went to bed if I did!

So not even 20 pages ago I'm thinking to myself "pssh this book isn't really that scary so far. I wonder if it's going to pick up". I'm sitting outside in broad daylight, it is not what I would call quiet out here as there is a busy parking lot on the other side of the trees and someone's cell phone goes off. I could not have jumped higher if someone had snuck up behind me and grabbed my shoulders. So yes Danielle. It does pick up.

Mesmerizing, captivating, dark. Jack Miller , his solitary life. He is transformed by the Arctic. His memories. His relationship with the dog 😭. I got the chilling terror towards the end. I was there with him & I felt very close to him. The oldest fear of all ... the fear of the dark , the fear of being alone in the dark. .. a creepy & beautiful book ! I really got lost in it @Reggie

I normally shy away from horror but I was pleasantly creeped out by this title which takes place in the far #north on the arctic circle. I liked the historical aspect of the book (set in the 1930s) as well as its ambiguity. The reader has to decide what really happens. #ReadingResolutions @Jess7

I‘m now (finally) done with Dark Matter, my latest read for my #ScreamsByMail #HorrorPostalBookClub 🙀 When I was actually reading it, it sped by, but I took a MASSIVE break in the middle of it because of animal death (yes, I know it‘s par for the course in the Arctic circle but I couldn‘t deal at the time). It reads as a journal, so it‘s fast reading, but honestly being stuck on a polar ice cap in the dark sounds like a horror story to me anyway!

Arctic, isolation, the dark, below freezing, despair, survival and a ghost. These are all the elements making this a book I thought I‘d love. Unfortunately it wasn‘t intense enough. After reading The Terror by Dan Simmons, this one was just a mere shadow of that one. This was alright. Not great.

This was a difficult prompt! There are so many great horror novels. I love a creepy ghost story that slowly builds up dread and ends in absolute terror. I think that‘s why Michelle Paver‘s Dark Matter is my favorite #horror novel.

I read Thin Air last year. It wasn‘t as good as Dark Matter, but it was still pretty spooky. 👻

Cinfhen I‘m reading Snow Child now, I‘ll be curious to hear your thoughts❣️ 2y
GatheringBooks @Cinfhen am really enjoying it while also being thoroughly creeped out by it 2y
Cinfhen I didn‘t like it! I found it very slow going and the magical elements frustrated me. I‘m glad you‘re enjoying. Most readers like this book. 2y

Wow!! This book is amazing! It creeped me out and had me glued to its pages as I wanted to know how the story ends. The author manages to capture the eerie quiet of the arctic winter perfectly and draws on some of our most basic fears: that of the dark, of being haunted and of being isolated from the world and losing all sense of time. This book will surely be my go-to recommendation for this year's Halloween reading. ❤️

minkyb Nice write-up! 3y
JazzFeathers Someone just recommanded it to me. It sounds right up my ally 😆 3y

Dogearedcopy I happen to be on my iPad at the moment, and this photo is amazing! I'm sure I would have blown past it on my iPhone; but here I see the fall of light and shadows through the glasses and from the window, and it all looks painterly! 😍 (edited) 3y

After the courier didn't deliver this on Saturday (he said that nobody was home even though I clearly was - basically sitting next to the door which nobody rang 😤), it's finally here. Can't wait to dive in. 😊

#dreamingofcolderclimeates I actually really like the cold and snow. Wrapping up warm and how pretty the world is covered in snow. I'm a sucker for books about cold places as perfect for hibernation at home. Also the winters in the uk are normally just a fine grey drizzle and less defined, maybe why I love snow books. Dark matter would be a perfect pick on #litsyreadingchallenge for #frezzerworthyhorror

BekahB I love that book so much! Paver's ability to slowly build up dread in this story is artful. I have her recent release Thin Matter, but I haven't read it yet. Now I'm feeling tempted to pull it off my shelf this weekend. 3y
Weaponxgirl @BekahB ohh I'd love to know how that is. And yes I basically shit myself reading dark matter. I got really into it couldn't sleep as I wanted to read the book. Read the book then couldn't go back to sleep whilst it was dark. I stayed up trying not to look at my window until it got light 3y
