Dark Matter: A Ghost Story | Michelle Paver
75 posts | 58 read | 123 to read
A terrifying 1930s ghost story set in the haunting wilderness of the far north. January 1937. Clouds of war are gathering over a fogbound London. Twenty-eight year old Jack is poor, lonely and desperate to change his life. So when he's offered the chance to join an Arctic expedition, he jumps at it. Spirits are high as the ship leaves Norway: five men and eight huskies, crossing the Barents Sea by the light of the midnight sun. At last they reach the remote, uninhabited bay where they will camp for the next year. Gruhuken. But the Arctic summer is brief. As night returns to claim the land, Jack feels a creeping unease. One by one, his companions are forced to leave. He faces a stark choice. Stay or go. Soon he will see the last of the sun, as the polar night engulfs the camp in months of darkness. Soon he will reach the point of no return - when the sea will freeze, making escape impossible. And Gruhuken is not uninhabited. Jack is not alone. Something walks there in the dark...

Read this book in Swedish. it is interesting when you also live north (not as far as the arctic though) to read about the perception of darkness, fear and needs of humans.
It is a well written ghost story. Perfect for dark winter nights.

Katie! Thank you so so much for this amazing #hauntedhollowswap ! I got up extra early to open it before work and I am glad I did!

I am so excited to read every one of these books and I love everything you picked out for me...from the candy to the apple wine (!!) and themed candle and the zombie pets sticky notes 😅 and everything else!
I WILL be wearing those socks and the Halloween face mask to work today. (That mask!) THANK YOU! 🖤🧡

I was going to tag Timothy Snyder's The Road to Unfreedom, but I went with the Gothic ghost story.

1. I was staying in a Victorian house in New Orleans. Before I went to sleep, I put my glasses on the nightstand, but when I woke up, I couldn't find them. After looking all over, I spotted them on the bed, right where I'd been lying. Either a ghost or I'd had too much to drink the night before.

2. Masks.

#ThankfulThursday @Cosmos_Moon

Cosmos_Moon 😂 as a resident of New Orleans, I think both having too much to drink and a ghost moving them are possible. 1y

A compelling and well written piece, part ghost story, part speculative horror and part existential crisis. A character piece focussing on isolation and terror that was surprisingly relaxing to read.

Paver's book is intelligent and intriguing in equal measures, a solid choice regardless of what you normally read.

Mistermandolin Paver is a fine writer. This one‘s a slow burn but rewarding at the same time. I loved the sense of isolation and mounting dread. Some novels just stay with you and this one has with me. Great pick. 2y
CJRwriting Totally agree. I was recommended it by a friend who is often on the money with these things. But he certainly hit a home run with this one. 2y

Wow! I've spent pretty much all later afternoon and evening reading this. Couldn't stop with the ace build up and tension. Thank goodness it's summer weather today 😊😊😎😎👻👻👻

Mistermandolin It‘s more a winter read but you‘re right: the tension is palpable and I couldn‘t put it down. Paver is a fine writer and this is a terrific novel. Eerie, claustrophobic and very atmospheric. A slow burn but all the better for that. Great pick! 2y

I finally finished a book! I‘ve had a very hard time concentrating during this quarantine so I had my daughter go to my bookshelves and pick out a book. Not wanting to disappoint her, I knew I‘d finish anything she selected. But she picked well- this was a ghost story that takes place in the Arctic during the endless night of winter. This book surprised me, and it‘s one I could imagine picking up again.

Caroline2 I really liked this book too. 👍 2y

I really loved this beautiful, terrifying little book! It's an amazing description of the landscape and wildlife of Svalbard, as well as a superbly creepy tale of the effects of the Arctic winter on the human psyche. It's also, as the subtitle says, an excellent ghost story! The atmosphere and growing sense of unease linger in your mind as you read, and long afterwards. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I solved the mystery of the mysterious package lol!! After getting my #TMSkellington #SecretSanta I decided to take a peak inside, and saw the packing slip. The order date made me curious. So I opened the entire thing and here was my book I had ordered from Amazon but it was fulfilled by Wordery lol.🤦🏽‍♀️Hoping to read it before the new year so I can finish my Popsugar prompt for same title (Dark Matter by Blake Crouch). So excited! #WinterGames

Horror as a genre is not something I‘ve read very often, so I think I may have expected too much from this in the “terrifying” category. However, it was a good read. I liked the diary entry format and enjoyed the descriptions of the artic (a place that fascinates me). And Isaak ❤️🐶

This was a slow burner horror but boy, when it got going it was full of a menacing dread that won‘t let go. I‘ve always thought I‘d make a good hermit, as long as I had all my books & music but being a hermit in the arctic is another animal entirely. Especially if you have the misfortune of being left in a bay haunted by a seriously pissed off ghost! #ReadHarder2019 #AnEpistolaryNovel #Pop19 #SetInScandinavia #SomethingWickedFall

Leaving Norway by ship spirits are high, but the Arctic Summer is brief & ends up alone after his companions desert him. Soon, the sun goes down for months & the sea freezes and Jack is trapped. Tamra I really enjoyed this one and has stuck with me. I didn‘t necessarily care for the end. A little too fantastical. Sometimes I think it‘s better to leave things lie with the imagination. 3y
ephemeralwaltz @Tamra that's great! I felt like the creepy factor didn't really start until page 200 and by then I was frustrated with the plot. Also, I don't think narratives in the form of a journal are for me :/ I became annoyed with the narrative voice. The scenery inside my head was stunning though - a movie version would be fun! 3y

Creepy little ghost story for All Hallows‘ Read. I‘m glad I read this on a bright autumn day and not a cold, dark winter‘s night! Cold and dark are like characters in this book. It‘s set in the Arctic, during the long lightless winter, one man alone, struggling to hold onto his sanity, haunted by the ghost of human cruelty. Recommended.

I LOVE this book. It terrified me, it‘s creepy, full of suspense & cleverly written. It‘s about being alone & knowing you‘re not; that feeling of something watching you from out in the darkness. Paver has an extraordinary talent of putting fear into words. I found myself constantly wondering when the scare would come. I don‘t think I‘d read this at night, I‘d definitely have to double check all the doors and windows before I went to bed if I did!

So not even 20 pages ago I'm thinking to myself "pssh this book isn't really that scary so far. I wonder if it's going to pick up". I'm sitting outside in broad daylight, it is not what I would call quiet out here as there is a busy parking lot on the other side of the trees and someone's cell phone goes off. I could not have jumped higher if someone had snuck up behind me and grabbed my shoulders. So yes Danielle. It does pick up.

Mesmerizing, captivating, dark. Jack Miller , his solitary life. He is transformed by the Arctic. His memories. His relationship with the dog 😭. I got the chilling terror towards the end. I normally shy away from horror but I was pleasantly creeped out by this title which takes place in the far #north on the arctic circle. I liked the historical aspect of the book (set in the 1930s) as well as its ambiguity. The reader has to decide what really happens. #ReadingResolutions @Jess7

I‘m now (finally) done with Dark Matter, my latest read for my #ScreamsByMail #HorrorPostalBookClub 🙀 When I was actually reading it, it sped by, but I took a MASSIVE break in the middle of it because of animal death (yes, I know it‘s par for the course in the Arctic circle but I couldn‘t deal at the time). It reads as a journal, so it‘s fast reading, but honestly being stuck on a polar ice cap in the dark sounds like a horror story to me anyway!

BookishTrish @Reggie No worries! My #moosemoose book is ahead of it anyway! 4y
kamoorephoto @GatheringBooks You can send whenever you like if it contains chocolate and tea 😹😹😹 🍫☕️ 💓 Seriously though, you can still send even if I don‘t get to it immediately. I do have to read my #LMPBC book (amongst others) before the next one, but it will be okay timing 👍🏼 4y

Mehso-so

Arctic, isolation, the dark, below freezing, despair, survival and a ghost. These are all the elements making this a book I thought I‘d love. Unfortunately it wasn‘t intense enough. After reading The Terror by Dan Simmons, this one was just a mere shadow of that one. This was alright. Not great.

It‘s here! All the way from #Singapore 🇸🇬, my next book for the #HorrorPostalBookClub from @GatheringBooks arrived safe and sound today, and I‘m super happy it made it to #Seattle 🇺🇸 okay (especially since Myra sent chocolate and tea). @scripturient picked it so it came from #Germany first 🇩🇪; we have some well-travelled books in our group! More countries to go... ✈️
**Thank you for the goodies @GatheringBooks 😽💖

scripturient Yay! Hope you like it! :) 4y
GatheringBooks am so thrilled it arrived there earlier than i expected. i hope the chocolates didn‘t melt and that you enjoy the tea. :) 4y
kamoorephoto @GatheringBooks No melting! But I have to guard that and the tea because they keep getting stolen in this house! 4y
kamoorephoto @scripturient I put the ‘library card‘ in the front like I showed you guys...I hope that‘s okay 🙌 4y

@MaleficentBookDragon #666giveaway
I like the idea of seeing what scary books are out there so i thought id post this one. Its rare for me to be spooked by a book but this book set in the artic circle gave me goose bumps and that feeling that someone was watching me read.
Don't worry about the giveaway element - great thread.

Tamra Good one!! 4y
