Death by Dumpling
Death by Dumpling: A Noodle Shop Mystery | Vivien Chien
Welcome to the Ho-Lee Noodle House, where the Chinese food is to die for. . . The last place Lana Lee thought she would ever end up is back at her familys restaurant. But after a brutal break-up and a dramatic workplace walk-out, she figures that helping wait tables is her best option for putting her life back together. Even if that means having to put up with her mother, who is dead-set on finding her a husband. Lanas love life soon becomes yesterdays news once the restaurants property manager, Mr. Feng, turns up deadafter a delivery of shrimp dumplings from Ho-Lee. But how could this have happened when everyone on staff knew about Mr. Fengs severe, life-threatening shellfish allergy? Now, with the whole restaurant under suspicion for murder and the local media in a feeding frenzyto say nothing of the gorgeous police detective who keeps turning up for take-outits up to Lana to find out who is behind Fengs killer order. . . before her own number is up. Vivien Chien serves up a delicious mystery with a side order of soy sauce and sass. A tasty start to a new mystery series! After a week of reading about war atrocities something lighter was called for - this cosy mystery did the trick! I actually ate dumplings today and Did Not Think to photograph them - such rookie behaviour! ?? So these are Googled dumplings, not the cute gyoza with pea purée and fried sugar snaps and roasted almonds I had for lunch ?
This is a cute little book - not much to it, but sweet characters and lots of food. ? ⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was a fun read! I don't really read cozy mysteries but this was a nice change of pace for me. I was annoyed at someone's reason for not telling the police information that could have made them less of a suspect, but generally I thought the mystery was well done and I liked Lana, the main character.
I'll be adding book two to my TBR.

A really cute cozy mystery set in a Chinese-American shopping center with a nosy protagonist (Lana) who works at her family‘s Chinese restaurant and inadvertently ends up delivering the murder weapon: shrimp dumplings. There‘s also a spunky roommate, a pushy mom, a lovable dad, way too many plausible suspects (I do love me a good Murder She Wrote or Midsomer Murders episode), and a cute pug named Kikko. And a cute detective.

balletbookworm A little predictable and some of the characterizations were thin but a really fun read. 4mo

I really enjoyed this. The Asia Village setting was populated with a bunch of interesting characters, and there was just the right amount of intrigue. My one complaint is that Lana's friends and family kept insisting she was moping and needed a boyfriend, but I didn't "know" she was moping until they said it. From Lana's own POV, she seemed fine! Oh well. Shoehorned romance plotline aside, this is a pick.

This somewhere between a pick and so-so for me. On the one hand, I enjoyed getting to know many of the various shopkeepers at Asian Village and it was a great location for what felt very much like a cozy mystery. On the other hand, reading about Lana bumbling around trying to solve it got a little wearying at times. She did succeed though and ended up with a handsome boyfriend too!

If this were a movie, I'd watch it in fifteen- or twenty-minute chunks over the course of a week or so, since I very much like the setting and I kinda wanna see where the mystery comes out but I ain't feeling the characters or their relationships.

Since it's a book with an unfortunate tendency to plod along, I'm bailing at 180 pages. Sadness.

(I really do wonder if this started as a TV pilot screenplay. It feels cinematic.) #caseyplusbooks

A fun cosy foodie mystery series set in an Asian mall in Ohio. The main character is a young woman working in her parents‘ Chinese restaurant (thanks to a bad breakup, a lost job ie desperation and bills to pay). She delivers the mall owner‘s usual lunch order only to find later that he had a fatal allergic reaction to the shrimp in it - where was his epipen? Who would want him dead? Lots of fun to read & I especially liked the setting!

This cozy mystery series is a quick read and it takes place in Cleveland! Perfect for fall. I can‘t wait for the third one that comes out this spring.

The series is about Lana Lee who is working at her parents Chinese restaurant and murders keep happening around her. It‘s nothing too horrific or complex, but they are well written and enjoyable!

I wanted to like this, but the characters are uninteresting and lack depth. I also felt that the ending was kind of ridiculous. I mean, crimes of passion are one thing; cold blooded killing is another and it‘s really difficult to combine them, and the author failed here. I really hate that a detective would be so foolish as to “fall” for a suspect, and almost no reason why Main character decides to play at detective was given. 1/5 stars

iread2much To be fair, maybe this just isn‘t the genre for me 13mo

queerbookreader

I volunteered today and ended up sharing with the librarian I work for how I organize and catalog all my book lists online and she was amazed and it was great and I showed her my way of organizing sub-genre mysteries and she saw my diverse mystery shelf and asked me about it 😭😭

I told her about this series and another cozy series by an author of color and about Ellen Hart's iconic lesbian detective Jane Lawless Mystery series and SHE LISTENED

julesG Would you share your organisation method with us? 13mo
queerbookreader @julesG Totally it's super simple in how to do it but you end up having a zillion subgenre shelves. That works for me because I need things organized super specific, but doesn't work for everyone. I break down large genres into sub-sections so I can find types of books easier, for example: my "history" shelf has a "history-herstory" shelf for women's history, and a "food history" shelf for food history stuff cos I read a lot of those 13mo
queerbookreader @julesG My queer shelf is broken down into "LGBTQIA comics", "LGBTQIA nonfic" and "lgbtqia fic". I'm planning on adding a history shelf under that section cos I love queer history. My mystery shelf is broken down into: 1) mystery 2) m - crime 3) m - cozy 4) m - diverse. My cozy shelf is broken down into: 1) mystery cozy 2) mc - animals 3) mc - bookish 4) mc- culinary 5) mc - crafty 6) mc - paranormal 13mo
See All 9 Comments
queerbookreader @julesG My comics shelves are organized by publisher, so I have a general graphic novel/comics section for novels and comics by publishers I don't read a lot, and then I have the rest organized into publisher (boom, dark horse, DC, IDW, image, marvel, oni, vertigo). I also have a queer comics shelf that's separate. 13mo
queerbookreader @julesG Those are my examples. I read a lot of comics, history books, and mysteries. The key here is organizing major genres into subcategories so you don't have to take forever to find a book in your lists. It helps especially if you read a ton of one certain genre, because there is more to it than just "fiction", or "romance", or "mystery". Contemporary fiction and historical fiction are totally different!! So why not sort them that way? 13mo
Tonton @queerbookreader Wow...generally pile by how titles go together, visual cues like cover colors, it‘s all very much instinctive. But nonfiction and poetry have their own sections. 13mo
julesG Wow! Thanks for taking the time to explain it. I used to do a simplified version of yours but gave up when the kids came along. 13mo
ReadingEnvy Wonderful. I wonder what she'll try first. 🤷 13mo
