Pride and Prejudice and Mistletoe
Pride and Prejudice and Mistletoe | Melissa de la Cruz
136 posts | 76 read | 1 reading | 65 to read
Pride and Prejudice and Mistletoe from New York Times bestselling author, Melissa de la Cruz, is a sweet, sexy and hilarious gender-swapping, genre-satisfying re-telling, set in contemporary America and featuring one snooty Miss Darcy. Darcy Fitzwilliam is 29, beautiful, successful, and brilliant. She dates hedge funders and basketball stars and is never without her three cellphonesone for work, one for play, and one to throw at her assistant (just kidding). Darcys never fallen in love, never has time for anyone elses drama, and never goes home for Christmas if she can help it. But when her mother falls ill, she comes home to Pemberley, Ohio, to spend the season with her family. Her parents throw their annual Christmas bash, where she meets one Luke Bennet, the smart, sardonic slacker son of their neighbor. Luke is 32-years-old and has never left home. Hes a carpenter and makes beautiful furniture, and is content with his simple life. He comes from a family of five brothers, each one less ambitious than the other. When Darcy and Luke fall into bed after too many eggnogs, Darcy thinks its just another one night stand. But why cant she stop thinking of Luke? What is it about him? And can she fall in love, or will her pride and his prejudice against big-city girls stand in their way?

This was a quick read and short book, but I found myself skipping over paragraphs. The characters felt shallow to me, the romance wasn‘t very believable, and I found some aspects confusing, like how she had an 8-year fight with her dad then suddenly, they‘re both okay with each other. Maybe it was the pacing, but it felt weird to me.

#NovelNovember was quite productive for me! I finished Beheld for #LiteraryCrew, and 2 #ARCS for #NetGalley. If you enjoy Jane Austen, and want to kick your holiday reading off with a quick, sweet romance—check out Pride, Prejudice & Mistletoe! I cannot recommend The Penguin Book of Christmas Stories; and I really enjoyed Anne Perry‘s latest Christmas offering. I will be diving into more of her works in the new year.

TheBookHippie Oh no what isn‘t good about the penguin Christmas??? 1y
MoonWitch94 @TheBookHippie Many of the stories were depressing and definitely not Christmas stories, but stories set during Christmas. It is a nice variety of stories from around the globe, but there was nearly no joy, goodwill, happiness, and positivity to be had in much of this anthology. I was quite disappointed. 1y
TheBookHippie @MoonWitch94 Ah, so it is what I wanted. 🖤 I preordered it. 🤣🤣🤣🙃💀 Be still my little black heart. That is FYI what I thought it was. Dark. 1y

Ugh…Darcy Fitzwilliam…why is she compelled to constantly refer to her wealth?! We get it, it was firmly established that you‘re a very successful partner at your firm…why do we need to keep hearing you state how you‘ve paid for everything and/or how much money you‘ve made for yourself?! So glad this ended quickly. #bookspin #bookspinbacklog

TheAromaofBooks I remember thinking that a huge problem with this book is that it was terrible at being a P&P variation... I just felt like de la Cruz got all the character motivations wrong when she was “updating“ the story and it annoyed the bejeebers out of me. 2y
JackOBotts @TheAromaofBooks agreed! This is only the 2nd P&P variation I‘ve read, and I much prefer the former 😆 2y

It‘s a #holidaytradition that I work a half-day on Christmas Eve but this year, today is our holiday. I‘d love to tell you I did something fun or productive but I am still trying to catch up on rest from last weekend‘s vet visits & so I ran to the store & then took a 5-hour nap. Starving when I woke up so eating a. lunch/dinner poke bowl & trying to actually read the tagged book ⬇️

DebinHawaii …this year. Poke bowls are a tradition as a holiday eve dinner. Later I‘ll be opening my #jolabokaflod package (I wanted to wait until this evening) & do some traditional Icelandic reading & chocolate consuming on this Christmas Eve. 📚🍫 Hope everyone is safe & warm & peaceful tonight.💙 (edited) 2y

Wow this one was not for me. The story itself wasn't too bad, but she really just should have written the story instead of trying to make it a P&P retelling. For me, the core of Austen's Darcy is his commitment to his family & responsibilities, but this Darcy has left behind her “unsupportive“ family to pursue her own career (& somehow magically, without any of her dad's money... which to me sounds like she should have started with $0??... ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) become one of the richest women in the country). Because the original story is mostly in Elizabeth's head & this story is mostly in Darcy's head, it also made it difficult to draw the parallels between the two. Darcy & Luke (this version's Elizabeth) already knew each other in high school, but Darcy starts snogging Luke almost as soon as she sees him, so there isn't really any actual feeling of animosity - we just have to imagine it ⬇ 3y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) based on what we're told from their past. In the original, Elizabeth & Charlotte are best friends - here Charlotte is reduced to a bitter, desperate girlfriend of Luke's. In the original, Darcy has semi-legitimate reasons for being concerned about Bingley getting entangled with Jane. Here, Bingley (Darcy's gay best friend) falls immediately in love with Luke's older brother (side note - I'm pretty sure Bingley supposedly grew up in the ⬇ 3y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) same area... how had he never met Luke's brother before??) & that whole plot felt completely contrived as the only way Darcy tries to “separate“ them is by telling Bingley she thinks they're moving too fast, leading to a big misunderstanding. There's also a Darcy boyfriend thrown in for good measure, just to mix things up. And, of course, in the original Darcy has been forced to take on many responsibilities since the death of his ⬇ 3y
See All 8 Comments
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) parents, which has also altered how he interacts with society. This Darcy has parents & three brothers & is apparently just a brat for fun.

It honestly wasn't a TERRIBLE book, but it definitely should have just been written as a book, not as a P&P parallel because the attempts at mirroring the original were what made this book almost unbearable for me to read.

witchyreader13 Sadly, I have similar feelings about a lot of books by Melissa de la Cruz - that they're not terrible, but not great either - but I've mostly read her contemporary and historical fiction. Some of her fantasy novels look interesting. I recently received a copy of her new Middle Grade novel, Never After, for review. The premise has potential. Here's hoping that it excels where her other works have failed for me. 3y
TheAromaofBooks @abooknersparadise - I think what frustrated me the most was that if she hadn't tried to make it a P&P knockoff, this could have been a perfectly entertaining piece of chick lit, even if it wouldn't have set the world on fire. But her clumsy attempts to shoehorn in P&P parallels that just didn't work drove me crazy!! I wouldn't write off trying another of her books, though, if I found one that sounded interesting, so maybe Never After will work! 3y

This book was...not good. I think the only reason I stuck with it was because it was such a hot mess it became amusing.

The storyline from the first 1/2 barely made sense, the equivalent of Darcy saving Lydia in this story was Darcy saving delinquent twins Kit and Lyle from juvie and was just...awkward.

It felt like a bad 80s romance, and it was written in 2017! #PemberLittens

TheAromaofBooks I've seen a lot of mixed reviews on this one & it's my #DoubleSpin for the month - I'm scared!! 😂 3y

alisiakae @TheAromaofBooks hopefully you will like it better than I did! @DGRachel If it wasn‘t an Austen retelling, I probably would have bailed. I tend to be more generous with seeing it through on those. @Sharpeipup have you read any of her other books? I bought my daughter Alex and Eliza for Chanukah, I‘m hoping that one is better. 3y
kellyannprz Precisely the hot mess is what made it entertaining for me! I tried to read it without expecting much, because I did have the feeling that it wasn‘t going to be very good. Nonetheless, there was a lot going on that just seemed...too much. 3y
DGRachel I‘ve read Alex and Eliza and thought it was charming. Not great literature by any means but I enjoyed it. 3y

I think this is the 4th time a character has power walked somewhere. I‘ve never seen so much power walking in one book, and mostly for such tiny distances! 🤷🏻‍♀️

vivastory Don't you have to walk for awhile for it to be considered a power walk 🤔 3y
alisiakae @vivastory usually! But the main character has also power walked from her parents bedroom door to their bed. I have to admit to having too much fun tearing this book apart while I read it, that I feel kinda bad. 3y

eanderson Whenever I hear power walking I just imagine the Malcolm in the Middle episode with Bryan Cranston speed walking... suit, helmet, and all! It‘s hilarious! 3y

I‘m being picky, but this story is partially set in Ohio, and there are zero Bloomingdale‘s in the state of Ohio.

Little inaccuracies like that drive me nuts!

tjwill That would bug me too if it was something I already knew. 3y
Bits Very true! Ohio born and raised and I only learned what Bloomingdale's was from watching Friends as a kid! 🤣 3y

Bits @4thhouseontheleft Now if she had said Kohl's, she would have successfully immersed the reader in the authentic Ohio experience. ? Also not sure "shopgirl" is the right term for a Bloomingdale's employee? ?‍♀️ 3y

I don't mind a light story, but there was almost nothing here! Not to mention the uneven pacing and none of the wit, feeling, or growth we see in the original characters. Melissa De La Cruz might be a bestselling author, but I didn‘t think the book was well written. The idea was good, but the execution fell flat. Rather than giving Pride and Prejudice a new flavor, the story strips the original plot from all its depth. Conflicts get resolved too quickly and emotions are not communicated very well through Darcy‘s narration. Moreover, both pride and prejudice are abandoned as actual character flaws, which is a shame.

Pride and Prejudice and Mistletoe by Melissa de la Cruz is inventive with character names, genders, and sexualities, making Darcy a woman and Lizzie into Luke. Darcy returns to her hometown, Pemberley, Ohio, for Christmas after her mother has a heart attack. This retelling is devoid of the social critique, while watering a complex novel into a cliche.

It's the Goodwill box for this one. In the authors defense, it's hard to write modern version of P&P. 1st Impressions works in the now, rest of the story doesn't. Today no one is going to starve in the hedgerows for not marrying. Rescue Lydia redo doesn't work at all. Worst is Darcy explaining 'she's not selfish snob but just Independent.' Uhh No. She's awful. Both her & Luke are totally unlikable in this Gender Swap of P&P. #notmydarcy

This was... unfortunate. The writing and story were so bad it was as if a high school student read P & P and thought, "that doesn't seem too difficult. I think I can reverse the roles and set it in modern times." Except they couldn't. And I checked, the person who wrote this is not a high school student so I don't know what her excuse is. If you're an Austen fan and feel compelled to read it I can't stop you but borrow, don't buy it!

TheFunkyBookworm Im sorry this was a dud but I sure do love a good ol‘ snarky negative review 😂 5y
Bookish_B @TheFunkyBookworm ? Lol. Honestly I very seldom post bad reviews because I feel bad for the authors but in this case the writing and story were SO bad I felt they were really just taking advantage of Austen fans who would naturally be drawn to this because it's an Austen "remake" so I decided not to feel too bad about going for it. 5y
TheFunkyBookworm @Bookish_B I totally get what ur saying- sometimes I feel bad too... but sometimes it is totally deserved!!! (See my review on The Store by James Patterson 😂) 5y
Lea I have the Hallmark movie on my DVR. Wonder if it‘s any better. 5y

Read this on the plane home for Christmas and just got a chance to finish it. It was eh, the almost 30 year old characters acted like silly 14 year olds. I could see it as a Hallmark movie but the book wasn't worth the read.

Heideschrampf I‘m pretty sure there was a P&P hallmark movie this year! 5y
