Pride and Prejudice and Mistletoe
Pride and Prejudice and Mistletoe | Melissa de la Cruz
94 posts | 51 read | 61 to read
Pride and Prejudice and Mistletoe from New York Times bestselling author, Melissa de la Cruz, is a sweet, sexy and hilarious gender-swapping, genre-satisfying re-telling, set in contemporary America and featuring one snooty Miss Darcy. Darcy Fitzwilliam is 29, beautiful, successful, and brilliant. She dates hedge funders and basketball stars and is never without her three cellphonesone for work, one for play, and one to throw at her assistant (just kidding). Darcys never fallen in love, never has time for anyone elses drama, and never goes home for Christmas if she can help it. But when her mother falls ill, she comes home to Pemberley, Ohio, to spend the season with her family. Her parents throw their annual Christmas bash, where she meets one Luke Bennet, the smart, sardonic slacker son of their neighbor. Luke is 32-years-old and has never left home. Hes a carpenter and makes beautiful furniture, and is content with his simple life. He comes from a family of five brothers, each one less ambitious than the other. When Darcy and Luke fall into bed after too many eggnogs, Darcy thinks its just another one night stand. But why cant she stop thinking of Luke? What is it about him? And can she fall in love, or will her pride and his prejudice against big-city girls stand in their way?

It‘s been snowing since about 10am and there‘s no sign of it stopping anytime soon! It feels very much like Christmas so it‘s timely that my hold on this book came through on Overdrive. Even though this has been pretty universally panned by my fellow Littens, I thought I‘d give it a go. Hope everyone is having a lovely Saturday. Snuggle up and stay warm!❄️ #hibernating

It's the Goodwill box for this one. In the authors defense, it's hard to write modern version of P&P. 1st Impressions works in the now, rest of the story doesn't. Today no one is going to starve in the hedgerows for not marrying. Rescue Lydia redo doesn't work at all. Worst is Darcy explaining 'she's not selfish snob but just Independent.' Uhh No. She's awful. Both her & Luke are totally unlikable in this Gender Swap of P&P. #notmydarcy

PurpleyPumpkin Ugh! Sounds like I should give this one a pass! Too bad, the premise seemed good. Of well. There‘s loads more books to read! Thanks for sharing your review. 👍🏽 9mo

After busy New Year's Celebrations it's lovely to have a quiet day at home. I've got the book but haven't yet read it. Movie has been on DVR since Thanksgiving. I refuse to watch Christmas movies in November.

PurpleyPumpkin I‘m with you, I like to read the book first! 9mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig @PurpleyPumpkin The movie was just a bunch of sappy clichés with fake snow. Ugh! Hopefully book is better. But it has lots of pans so Im not expecting much. 9mo
PurpleyPumpkin Ugh, that‘s so disappointing. Well, the book is usually better, but I had no idea it had so many pans. I‘ve had this one on hold for a while. Maybe I should give it a pass.... I‘ll wait for your review. 9mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig @PurpleyPumpkin The only similarities between book & movie is the Title, Girl named Darcy goes home, & both equally bad. It's like comparing bad apples to bad oranges. I'll tag you when I have a chance to a review. 9mo

Wow, this book is...something else. When it decides to dip into P&P it does it badly, and almost every character is a terrible person (especially the two mains). There's not one, but TWO revenge engagements. Wow.

Not even a fun light read.

My last holiday read and it was just meehhh. Darcy drove me absolutely nuts with her inner dialogue. I wanted to strangle her most of the time. Bingley and Luke kept me reading. 2.5-3 🌟for it being a quick no brainer read for the busy holiday season.

This was... unfortunate. The writing and story were so bad it was as if a high school student read P & P and thought, "that doesn't seem too difficult. I think I can reverse the roles and set it in modern times." Except they couldn't. And I checked, the person who wrote this is not a high school student so I don't know what her excuse is. If you're an Austen fan and feel compelled to read it I can't stop you but borrow, don't buy it!

TheFunkyBookworm Im sorry this was a dud but I sure do love a good ol‘ snarky negative review 😂 10mo
Bookish_B @TheFunkyBookworm ? Lol. Honestly I very seldom post bad reviews because I feel bad for the authors but in this case the writing and story were SO bad I felt they were really just taking advantage of Austen fans who would naturally be drawn to this because it's an Austen "remake" so I decided not to feel too bad about going for it. 10mo
TheFunkyBookworm @Bookish_B I totally get what ur saying- sometimes I feel bad too... but sometimes it is totally deserved!!! (See my review on The Store by James Patterson 😂) 10mo

Read this on the plane home for Christmas and just got a chance to finish it. It was eh, the almost 30 year old characters acted like silly 14 year olds. I could see it as a Hallmark movie but the book wasn't worth the read.

Heideschrampf I‘m pretty sure there was a P&P hallmark movie this year! 10mo

I like the concept behind this book—a modern, gender bended P & P, but it felt like the characters were never fully realized & there was a LOT of exposition to explain what was going on. I also think it should have ended 50 pages sooner! The last few pages felt like interesting writing exercises to help develop plot, but there was no narrative flow.

Lovesbooks87 I didn't like this book either. I just skimmed over the last couple of chapters! 10mo

hes7 i was disappointed with this book last year. I am interested in checking out the Hallmark-movie version though. 10mo
LA_Mead @hes7 ooh! I‘d probably watch the movie. When I was reading it I felt like it would make a better movie than a book based on the narrative flow. 10mo

Ok a few things. 1) Darcy and Bingley are sitting out poolside in December in Ohio to soak up the sun. I think this author has confuse Ohio for somewhere warmer like Florida. 2) It‘s been 8 years since this chick has been back in Ohio, and in the span of what seems like 3 days, she already knows what time a Club opens? How does she know it even still exists?

Crinoline_Laphroaig I just got this one to read. 10mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig Ohio in December? 😮 10mo
DandelionFluff @Crinoline_Laphroaig Yeah it mostly takes place in Ohio, which gets pretty cold in the winter. So them sitting poolside for a bit was beyond weird. Especially since the next day it was snowing. 10mo

TLDR: The classic Austen tale is remixed and set in contemporary Ohio with Darcy being a wealthy woman, and protagonist, of the story.

Good:
Holiday charm
Not every element was slavishly included (as happens in some remixes)
Darcy as a woman places the woman in the power position

Bad:
writing is so so
characters feel flat
Certain scenes feel forced

book only works if you know P&P but if you loved P&P it might annoy you. #romance #romancelover

A fun, light, and romantic modern version of Pride and Prejudice. If you are looking for a full modern version, watch The Lizzie Bennet Diaries. This one covers the main storylines of Jane and Elizabeth with a few other plot points mixed in. If you are looking for a easy read after a dark book, give this a whirl.

I try really hard to find at least one good thing to say about books I read, even when I don‘t particularly care for them, but honestly? This was awful. The characters are all painfully stereotypical, none are particularly likable, and frankly, the writing is just...not great. I enjoyed De La Cruz‘ “Witches of East End” series, so I‘m disappointed in this on quite a few levels. #prideandprejudiceandmistletoe #melissadelacruz

Skyrimir It was so awful, and I feel like the connection to Pride and Prejudice was really forced. I really wanted to enjoy it! One of the very few books I‘ve bought brand new too... 2y
actualdisneyprincess @Skyrimir right? I just...in theory, it‘s great. Its execution, however, was SO BAD. Everyone read like tweens, and tbh, Darcy WAS a self-important brat. (And honestly, I started to lose respect for de la Cruz when she blatantly ripped off the “Hamilton” logo for the cover of “Alex & Eliza,” which I refuse to read because of that. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️) (edited) 2y
Erika13137 Ugh I know! This was a brutal read. 2y
actualdisneyprincess @Erika13137 I wanted to love it, and I would have settled even for just being amused by it, but Lord have mercy, I don‘t know how I even managed to finish it. 🙄 2y
