The Two Towers
The Two Towers: Being the Second Part of The Lord of the Rings | J.R.R. Tolkien
The second volume in J.R.R. Tolkien's epic adventure THE LORD OF THE RINGS One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them Frodo and his Companions of the Ring have been beset by danger during their quest to prevent the Ruling Ring from falling into the hands of the Dark Lord by destroying it in the Cracks of Doom. They have lost the wizard, Gandalf, in a battle in the Mines of Moria. And Boromir, seduced by the power of the Ring, tried to seize it by force. While Frodo and Sam made their escape, the rest of the company was attacked by Orcs. Now they continue the journey alone down the great River Anduinalone, that is, save for the mysterious creeping figure that follows wherever they go. Among the greatest works of imaginative fiction of the twentieth century. The book presents us with the richest profusion of new lands and creatures, from the beauty of Lothlrien to the horror of Mordor. Sunday Telegraph

Lauraandherbooks I completely understand- I have had the same problem 😳 2d
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Lauraandherbooks I‘m glad it‘s not just me... the only thing I‘ve read lately was a comic and a short (very short) story. I find myself wishing for old trusty Presidents of yore and administrations that I could ignore for months at a time and just trust they were all doing their jobs mostly fine and not have to keep tabs on them. This being up to date and knowledgeable is becoming not only a full time job but one that‘s 80+ hrs a week. 2d
Lauraandherbooks @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I know exactly what you mean- I was thinking the same thing just yesterday! Upset that more ppl aren‘t paying attention but wished I could be the same and bury my head in the sand - but I am going to try to not obsess over it so much , try to reserve some sanity 😆 2d

1. I suppose l should say The Two Towers, which is one of my all times favourite books. But since there is no competition there, l'll say The Faceless Killers, which l've just finished.

2. I posted it a few days ago, from Tolkien's The Two Towers: "The Men of the Mark do not lie, and therefore they are not easily deceived." From my boy Eomer.

The chapters following Frodo & Sam‘s journey can be tough, but I enjoy this little break in the travel with the meal Sam cooks. I think Sam asks a bit much in wanting Gollum to find herbs, but the taters discussion is amusing. There really are so many ways to enjoy potatoes. To go along with the chapter, I had a baked potato smothered in chili and cheese.

I‘m also now only 2 chapters behind!

Seriously, the appearance of Gollum gave me the chills. So much of the following relationship between these three characters is already found here.

Gollum is such an awesome character. His disturbed personality has such a surprising strength.

The relationship between Aragorn and Gandalf is so peculiar. I love that they respect each other, to the point to keep each other secrets and acknowledge their own limits.
That's what allows them to relate to each other as equal, no matter what their nature is.

Saruman speech is a masterpiece of rhetoric, the very essence of the power of words.

I find it interesting that Gandalf's voice, who can rouse the hearts and minds of people, is often impatient, while Saruman's is soft and almost smooth.

I suppose that often good advise is not easy to listen to. Soft speaking is easier.

Daisey This is a very valid point about their voices and advice for the reader in how we listen to others as well. 5d

“It had always been a notion of his that the kindness of dear Mr. Frodo was of such a high degree that it must imply a fair measure of blindness.”

It is possible to treat people with kindness and respect without being oblivious to things with which you disagree. Sometimes though, you have to make the difference clear because others may see only blindness or agreement in that kindness.

I‘ve caught up on some chapters the last few days. The Forest of Fangorn and the Ents are another one of the aspects of the story I always love to read about. Now, the rest of the Fellowship is headed back through Rohan and it‘s time for Book Four with Frodo and Sam.

#FellowshipofTolkien #LotRChapterADay #BreakfastWithTolkien

Deifio I'm on the same chapter. I kind of dread the Frodo and Sam chapters though. They were not my favourite parts the first time around 7d
Daisey @Deifio They are not my favorites either, and I dreaded them a bit on the last readalong. However, reading them with a group and considering Tolkien‘s war experience as some inspiration for their grim description helped me appreciate them more last time. 7d
JazzFeathers @Deifio l always fought this Frodo and Sam's part in the past. But when l read it last time l really loved it. That's the true heart of the story and l think that if you keep your mind open rather that wait for the action, you'll have a lot more out of it 😊 7d

There are several things l like about this passage, the chief one boing that l love that Tolkien gives Sauron - Who appears to be so invincibile - such feeling as fear and doubts.
In this way we are reminded that there is something that link him to all other people of Middle-Earth. He was once a Maiar, he wasn't always the Dark Lord. There's fragility in it, and of course, there is a long story to be told.

I've heard many times that Gandalf is really Tolkien. And l don't doubt there's a lot of him in the wizard who enjoyes a simple life and sometimes looses his patience ?

But on this reread l thought l've noticed a lot of Tolkien in Treebeard too.

"My name is like a story. Real names tell you the story of the thing they belong to."

Supper and books with the Super Bowl on in the background! I finished “The Riders of Rohan” and I‘m not sure if it‘s the other reading in between or something else, but the experiences of Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas seemed more trying this time. So how come Gandalf didn't get a song?
And I have to say they're all pretty quick to make up new songs!
#fellowshipoftolkien

shanaqui Trivia: I think that's very much inspired by Norse sagas (e.g. the Saga of Gunnlaug Serpent-Tongue), where skalds frequently make up insulting or praising verses. :) It's something that's so common in them that it probably was done, though there were a lot of formulas that made them easy to compose. 3w
Daisey Interesting question. I‘m going with the idea that they actually had to flee after Gandalf, but here they compose the song as part of the ceremony of sending the boat down the river. 3w
