The Two Towers
The Two Towers: Being the Second Part of The Lord of the Rings | J.R.R. Tolkien
The second volume in J.R.R. Tolkien's epic adventure THE LORD OF THE RINGS One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them Frodo and his Companions of the Ring have been beset by danger during their quest to prevent the Ruling Ring from falling into the hands of the Dark Lord by destroying it in the Cracks of Doom. They have lost the wizard, Gandalf, in a battle in the Mines of Moria. And Boromir, seduced by the power of the Ring, tried to seize it by force. While Frodo and Sam made their escape, the rest of the company was attacked by Orcs. Now they continue the journey alone down the great River Anduinalone, that is, save for the mysterious creeping figure that follows wherever they go. Among the greatest works of imaginative fiction of the twentieth century. The book presents us with the richest profusion of new lands and creatures, from the beauty of Lothlrien to the horror of Mordor. Sunday Telegraph

“Are we riding far tonight, Gandalf?” asked Merry after a while. “I don‘t know how you feel with small rag-tag dangling behind you; but the rag-tag is tired and will be glad to stop dangling and lie down.”

Gosh, I love the hobbits. Clever, self-deprecating, light humor while plaintively asking, in essence, “Are we there yet?” 😂

Daisey Exactly! I read this same scene last night and very much enjoyed the bit of light humor. 5h

#LotRChapterADay #FellowshipOfTolkien

What always impresses me about Tolkien's battle scenes is that he clearly knows what he's talking about. He knows how people and armies move on the grounds, he knows the tactics. Yet he always manages to bring the battle down on a human level. We know what the characters do, think and feel, their fears and their hopes.
And this is what makes Tolkien's battles so invelving.

This chapter is very special to me.
The first time l read LotR l enjoyed it. I enjoyed it as l had enjoyed many other fantasy stories. In the 1990s there were plenty with Elves and Dwarves and Dark Lords and quests.
But when l came to this chapter!
Theoden's awakening truly spoke to me and in that moment, as Theoden and Gandalf spoke under a stormy sky stubbed by sunshine, l fell in love with this book.

I had hopped to finish Book 3, but it didn't happen.
Problem is that lately l feel too tired to read at night which is my usual time to read. I need to find a different schedule.
But in the meanwhile, let's see what I'm going to get tonight.

This chapter is one of my favourite in The Two Towers. And l wondered about it in the past, because it is basically all exposition. There is no action in it. Yet, come to thinpoint, as a reader, l want to know all this things, so l read eagerly, trying to fix this info in my mind.
This is the mark of a great storyteller.

Treebeard is such a peculiar character. Actually, Ents are such peculiar characters. I'll admit l had a hard time with this chapter in the past. But this time around, l really enjoyed it. I like the calm.way in which it unfolded. And l appreciated Treebeard personality and philosophy. In a way, it complements the Hobbits's attitude.

I also made some progress on #LotRChapterADay #FellowshipOfTolkien though l am indeed bahind. Trying to catch up this weekend, so to start on time on Monday 🤞

I'm always impressed with the Hobbits' ability to remain optimistic in even the most terrible circumstances.
This is what Tolkien called 'hobbitry' and l think we would all use a bit of it.

“In one thing you have not changed, dear friend,” said Aragorn: “you still speak in riddles.”
“What? In riddles?” said Gandalf. “No! For I was talking aloud to myself. A habit of the old: they choose the wisest person present to speak to; the long explanations needed by the young are wearying.”
He laughed, but the sound now seemed warm and kindly as a gleam of sunshine.

So does that mean that Fangorn is older than Tom Bombadil? Or is Tom not a living thing walking upon the earth? 🤔 #FellowshipofTolkien #LotRChapteraDay

JazzFeathers I wondered the same thing. Or is Treebeard 'thinking' he is the oldest? In the drafts, Tom calls himself not 'the oldest' but the 'Aborigene', which is a fascinating idea. And would make him older than Treebeard 😏 4d
Daisey There‘s some kind of note about this in my annotations. I‘ll try to remember to look it up when I get home. I think it‘s one of those things where Tolkien spike in superlatives and it ends up a bit contradictory. 4d
Clare-Dragonfly @JazzFeathers @Daisey I actually asked my husband about this and got an explanation! Basically, knowing that Tom Bombadil is older than everything else would involve meta-knowledge, and though Gandalf is extremely wise, he exists within the world of Middle-Earth and doesn‘t know what is outside it. Tom Bombadil, on the other hand, existed before Middle-Earth quite literally—Tolkien told his stories first. 4d
Clare-Dragonfly I foolishly asked the question right before bedtime. The explanation lasted a lot longer than that. Yes, my husband is a huge Tolkien nerd 🥰 4d
Daisey @Clare-Dragonfly That‘s a good answer. I didn‘t find anything very helpful in my notes. 4d

I adore this chapter 😍
The dialogue between Eomer and Aragorn is simply spectacular. There is action, and emotion, and building in this dialogue.
I don't know how Tolkien did it, but he did it.
It's simply phenomenal.

wisherwishinguponastar I started reading the corresponding chapters in “The Treason of Isengard” and apparently Tolkien struggled with getting the timeline here worked out. I like to imagine Aragorn and Éomer working out the days on their fingers. 1w

It can be a distinct disadvantage to the enjoyment of the plot to know the story beats before reading, aka rereading, especially when it comes to the second book in a trilogy. I was happy to revisit some things: the Ents, the white robe reveal, Theoden getting his groove back, Legolas and Gimli moments, Saruman and Wormtongue as roommates with a lakeside residence 😉. 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/3 But basically everything with Frodo, Sam and Gollum, even most of the bits with Faramir are agonizing to read or listen to more than once - not necessarily because it's boring, aka slow to develop, but because it's watching various struggles unfold, with no promise of an ending in sight.
2mo
Robotswithpersonality 3/3 This entry in the series is also more proof I prefer cozy to high fantasy; I'm much more into tree herder meetings than battles recounted. On the other hand there is so much going on, you get some 'tell instead of show' that I wish the reader was 'there' for. Tolkien manages a writing style that makes you feel like you are reading a historical document of the deeds of heroes of a past age, which is a pro and a con for me. 🤷🏼‍♂️ 2mo

I loved this one. Here we are in the midst of despair and the absolutely metal landscape of Mordor. We get a lot of Sméagol, which I live for, as he is the most slippery of the characters. What is he? Will he be loyal? Where does he go?? Not to mention the incredible Elder Goddess Shelob. ? I‘m picking up on a deep melancholy that I wasn‘t expecting. Ready for the final portion of the story!

This was a strange experience because it's obviously a cut out from a larger narrative but without the softened edges you normally get in a trilogy second book. I definitely loved the first half more than the second because I don't really care about Frodo and Same.
