B is for Burglar
B is for Burglar | Sue Grafton
Female, age thirty-two, self-employed and wiser than she used to be. For Kinsey Millhone, private investigator, only one thing stays the same. When a client sits down in the chair across the desk, she never knows whats going to happen next . . . There was nothing about Beverly Danziger to cause Kinsey concern. She was looking for her sister. There was a will to be settled. She paid up front. And if it seemed a lot of money for a routine job, Kinsey wasnt going to argue. She kicked herself later for the things she didnt see - Beverly Danziger did not look as if she needed a few thousand dollars and she didnt seem like someone longing for a family reunion. But just as Kinsey begins to suspect foul play and start asking questions, Beverly Danziger pulls her off the case and fires her . . . One of the best written crime novels by anybody in recent memory New York Times

Pretty sure I would not have dived straight into the next book in this series if my library hadn't had a bind up of the first two stories together. As it is I'm glad I did, because I ended with a more favourable impression after the second than I did after reading the first. A few more chuckles in this one. 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? Kinsey is emerging as more of a personality with potential for further development. Julia Ochsner and Harry Pitts are my faves, seems the best characterization is awarded to the elderly characters! 8mo
Robotswithpersonality 3/3 I'm too gullible to rank the predictability level of any murder mystery, but for me, it did what it needed to, in that I didn't see the end coming. Would love to have had a bit more background as to the seemingly unhinged female characters appearing in this story. As much as Grafton doesn't drag things out, the other side of the coin applies, in that the endings feel very abrupt. ⚠️ Fatphobia 8mo
Robotswithpersonality Will likely pick up this series anytime I need a distraction without much emotional involvement. 8mo

B is for Burglar is the second book in the series and I am loving Kinsey! She is a great character. I continue to like the fact that the story isn‘t overly complicated and confusing, and I love that the vocabulary isn‘t dumbed down for the masses. Makes this teacher heart happy!

I need more Kinsey Millhone in my life. I find her unflappable & no-nonsense personality calming & reassuring, even in the midst of a case like the one that she faces in B is For Burglar. Kinsey is approached by a woman to locate her missing sister to sign papers for an inheritance. This begins an intriguing investigation that leads to other cases. This one could have easily been titled B is For Bizarre. There is a character that I don't👇

vivastory imagine that I will be forgetting anytime soon. Bonus points for the fact that it had me literally exclaim in surprise. No small feat for a mystery. I really like the way Grafton ends her books with the resolution of the case & a short epilogue, or at least the 2 that I have read. (pictured is my signed copy of U is for Undertow). #cloakanddaggerchristmas 2y
LeahBergen I haven‘t read any Kinsey Millhone for years! I read a great big bunch of them in the ‘90s. 😊 2y
vivastory @LeahBergen Do you by chance recall any particular favorites? 2y

LeahBergen I think I only read the first 8 or so? I liked them when I read them, though! 2y
vivastory @LeahBergen I don't know if I'll read all of them, but I will def be reading more. She is a great character & I like how they are set in the 80s but aren't dated 2y
TrishB I‘ve read A and somehow never gone back- you‘ve raised my interest again! 2y
Christy2318 I‘m sad she didn‘t make it to Z. I keep putting off reading Y because it‘s the last one. 2y
Megabooks My mom loved these. I‘d love to read them one day, but I‘ve never made the time. 2y
quietjenn I think I need to revisit these. Like @LeahBergen I read a ton - or, really, whatever was it at the time - in the 90s, but didn't keep up with the series. 2y

This is the second book in this series and I‘m really enjoying it so far. I‘m definitely going to continue reading. I love Kinsey and her sense of humor and look forward to where the series goes! ⭐️⭐️⭐️

BookishMarginalia I liked most of them, but stopped toward the end of the series... I think it might have been a serial killer book or something similar. That‘s one storyline I tend to avoid. 3y

I've read this many times, I keep forgetting where I'm at in the series. I've been reading them since high school and I'm finally Kinsey's age which is crazy to me! I forgot how matter of fact she is but it's not a bad thing!

MrBook Love that tidbit! 😁 3y
Kloves2read My favorite series! I am currently up to X! I see so much of myself in the character of Kinsey it‘s very comforting. I love how Sue managed to create a small cast of characters that are entertaining like Rosy, and Henry who feels like an old friend. ❤️ 3y

I loved it! Kinsey is hired to find a missing person, and finds herself in a murder mystery. I felt like this book showed a little more of Kinsey‘s personality, and I think she and Stephanie Plum would be great friends.

jewright Is this one better than the first one? I don‘t feel like it‘s as fun as Stephanie Plum. 3y
Lauranahe I liked it better than the first one. And no, not as fun as stephanie plum, but I feel like these paved the way for stephanie, you know? Strong female, doesn‘t take people‘s shit, hates exercise and loves food, isn‘t afraid to give her opinion. It must have been super refreshing in the 80s. Maybe if Kinsey had a lula and grandma Mazur, with a hot side piece of ranger, she‘d have more fun! 3y

The motive behind this whodunnit seemed contrived but yet I tore through this one. I forgot how catty (but vivid!) Kinsey could be when describing people and their appearances— at least in the earlier books.

These bring me back to a time and place I‘m very familiar with— California in the 1980s. When DNA analysis didn‘t exist, and serial crimes were rampant. But hey the weather was usually great!

3⭐️

Things I didn‘t notice 1st time around...these novels are very much of their time there is no internet & no mobile phones which means crimes are harder to investigate and easier to get away with I can‘t remember if Grafton keeps pace with technology in the later books.

Kinsey can be mean & unkind about other women 😢 guess that makes her human.

I still love Rosie

A quick, fun read. Kinsey is an appealing narrator and protagonist, with a wry, self-deprecating wit. I did find she has a tendency to introduce a lot of characters quite quickly which meant I struggled a bit to remember who was who so I think these are best read at one sitting or close to it.
