I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this memoir!

Mayte followed in her mother's footsteps and became an accomplished belly dancer at a very young age.

One thing led to another and she became a dancer for Prince. The story of their life together is a page-turner.

I picked this up at the Dollar Tree not even really considering myself a fan of Prince. I'm glad I took a chance.

Couldn't resist picking this up when I found it at Dollar Tree (or should we call it Buck-25 Tree now?) back in June. There were some concerning things here (Prince seemed to be grooming her from the time she was 16 😳) and some truly heartbreaking things (including the death of their newborn son) 💔 but it was an honest look at her life with a notoriously private musician.

I knew nothing of Mayte Garcia before reading this. This is her story, and while part of it includes Prince, I appreciated her life separate from him just as much. She was a bellydancer from a very young age, learning alongside her mother. She had a thriving dance career before she met Prince, and as a teen she met him as a dancer.

This is also her story of struggling to become a mom. Really beautiful, I cried.

This is Mayte Garcia‘s life story that Prince was part of for 11 years. It seems Garcia tried to put him in a positive light when possible, but I doubt anyone reading will wish they‘d been married to him. It‘s a fascinating (but not salacious) autobiography.

I very rarely cry when reading books, but this one made me cry…a few times! 😔 It‘s a beautiful story…and beautifully written. I‘m not a huge fan of Prince, but this book had me going to YouTube and looking songs I‘d never heard of up. I even found myself liking the songs 😬 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I didn‘t like it. It was mostly about her and I was thinking it was about Prince. Plus, I didn‘t know that he met her when she was 16 and became her guardian at 17. They married when she was 19. That didn‘t sit right with me so I didn‘t enjoy this one.

🎧 I expected a story about Prince. As I listened it felt more like Mayte‘s life. She reads the book. And about 1/3 of the way in I was hooked. I thought I wanted a history of Prince but ended up enjoying this book immensely as a memoir of a young girl‘s life who just happened to be married to Prince for a handful of years. Very interesting book! A very positive book. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

1. It's sad. 2. Mayte was no trophy wife, her story is pretty amazing on it's own. 3. I love Prince and it gives some insight on the secretive icon. 4. It was a fun fast read. Loved it.

I‘ve never been a huge fan of Prince, though I like some of his songs, but I won a copy of this book and went into it figuring it would be a juicy tell-all from his first wife. Instead, it focuses mostly on Mayte, her upbringing, the circumstances that led her to meeting and falling in love with Prince, and the way she put her life back together after losing her child and her marriage.
