My Best Friend's Exorcism
My Best Friend's Exorcism: A Novel | Grady Hendrix
Abby and Gretchen have been best friends since fifth grade, when they bonded over a shared love of E.T., roller-skating parties, and scratch-and-sniff stickers. But when they arrive at high school, things change. Gretchen begins to act . . . different. And as the strange coincidences and bizarre behavior start to pile up, Abby realizes theres only one possible explanation: Gretchen, her favorite person in the world, has a demon living inside her. And Abby is not about to let anyone or anything come between her and her best friend. With help from some unlikely allies, Abby embarks on a quest to save Gretchen. But is their friendship powerful enough to beat the devil?

I'm going to have a hard time matching the impression Lincoln in the Bardo made on me, but here's a sampling of the books I got from the library to try. Not sure where to start!

Emilymdxn I loved On Earth We‘re Briefly Gorgeous! 2d
EmilyM The Nickel Boys 👍 2d
merelybookish I couldn't resist the Cusk! But so many good choices! 2d

Wow, this is a silly, heartfelt, nostalgic horror comedy filled with Aussie hair spray, Bartles and James wine coolers, those problematic 80s, Satanic Panic and the power of human connections (and throughout I was hearing whispers of Def Leppard). I‘m cutting my teeth here on reviews and since we‘re in the time of burn the witch who spoils I‘m leaving y‘all with 2 factoids. I read it in like a day and a half and it made me ugly cry. Read it.

Caroline2 Whey! I just ordered this book and it‘s is next to read on the pile. 😉 👍 1w
FredMcmillan @Caroline2 you‘re not going to be able to put it down. Especially if you have some affinity for the era it takes place in. Enjoy! 1w

I'd try not bail on this, but 😝 the dirty words and deeds get a little too gross for my taste in pumpkin ale .. The book cover is cute, but I'm finding the 80's horror flick theme, overly around the rebellious teen misadventures 🙄 Maybe it's just my October feeling, currently looking for something else .. I'll retry this book again another time for thoughts.

It's about time I started My Best Friend's Exorcism, as a stacked TBR gift from a best friend of mine. 📣🤓 Here's a clue on this year's humour, early at the Spirit Halloween shop. I've got a quirky costume thing for collecting cheer outfits; now as my 4th! 🎃 Photo shares coming soon, near Halloween.

So I have been tagged by about 20 people to participate in this challenge. It's my own fault since I am the #coverlove girl. So I am not sticking to 7, but to one for every person who tagged me. Sorry I don't remember who it all was, and I admit to being to lazy to go look. @Jennifer88 had the first day and I posted Across the Universe.

Book 2 is the paper back edition of the ragged book. The hardcover cover sucked.

A darkly farcical journey into teenage drama and the 1980s "War on Drugs" and other vehicles of evil. The book has that tongue-in-cheek "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" feel to it, if you find the idea of teenage demonic possession and 80s satanic paranoia funny (I do). It might be a bit too dark for some. It gets into the intense drama of teenage relationships in a realistic way. High School was a bit like an exorcism for me too.

Megabooks Loved this book! 1mo
petersonks15 I decided to skip this read, mostly because I haven‘t really read anything since school began and idk that I can handle reading anything dark right now. #teacherexhaustion 1mo

I had listened to some Books on Tape as a kid, but it wasn‘t until I got #BehindtheWheel for an hour-a-day commute that I really appreciated audiobooks. The first book I tried on Audible was the tagged book, and I was hooked!

In less than three years, I‘ve racked up a lot of listening time, and this doesn‘t include library books! #MayMovieMagic

toofondofbooks I read almost exclusively audiobooks now because you can do so many other things at the same time 6mo
Kaye Another audiobook fan too. I almost exclusively listen to them. Once in awhile I still read print books but very seldom. 6mo
Megabooks @Birdsong28 They totally are!! 6mo
Megabooks @toofondofbooks @MrBook asked the other day what you do while listening to audiobooks, and I‘m all, “What don‘t I do?” 😂😂 6mo
Megabooks @Kaye 👍🏻👍🏻 I did it nearly constantly when I lived alone. I just had my speaker, and if I was cooking, it was in the kitchen, etc. Now that I‘m living with people, I read more ebooks, but I love still love audio! Plus, I do love it on walks. I wish my foot had allowed me to do Litsy walkers because audiobooks make taking walks even better. 6mo
Kaye I‘m home alone most of the time so I listen to mine a lot. At first, I had a hard time getting used to them, then I was reading about half and half... now it‘s about 90% audiobooks. I‘m not sure if that‘s a good or bad thing. In a way, I feel like I‘m getting lazy because I‘d rather have someone else read to me 😊 , but I get so much more out of audio. Not only do you get to hear a book, but an excellent narrator adds more color to the story. 6mo
Crazeedi I would really like to get into audio, I've tried twice and it was not that great 6mo
Megabooks @Kaye For me, reading in print comes more naturally. I have to concentrate more to understand audiobooks, so I feel like it counts double. Not really lol! But I think that‘s why it took me awhile to get into them @Crazeedi . Plus the narrator makes a huge difference!! 6mo
MrBook 😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 6mo
Crazeedi @Megabooks I've heard the narrator makes the difference, I guess I just haven't listened to the right narrator yet. I'm going to try again, cause I'll be outside a lot and it would be so convenient 6mo
Megabooks @MrBook 😊😊😊👍🏻🎉 6mo
Megabooks @Crazeedi Here are some of my fav narrators: Therese Plummer, Cassandra Campbell, Emily Woo Zeller, Dion Graham, Bahni Turpin, Tavia Gilbert, David Sedaris, Kirby Heyborne, Julia Whelan - you can probably tell I like mainly women with American accents, but I love it when people post to Litsy asking about narrators because there are always new ones to find! 💕🎧 (edited) 6mo
Cinfhen I agree @Crazeedi a narrator makes a HUGE difference. I also found NF or memoirs are really more interesting to listen to. I recommend a book of essays to get started because you can dip in and out. This one was hilarious 6mo
Cinfhen If you have Hoopla @Crazeedi you can find lots of free audio 6mo
Megabooks Don‘t forget 6mo

Megabooks @rohit-sawant 😊👍🏻 6mo
Megabooks @Crazeedi You can listen for free to 5 minutes near the beginning on Audible‘s website to see if you hate the narrator right off 6mo
Crazeedi @Megabooks great! Ty!! 6mo
gradcat @Cinfhen What is Hoopla? 6mo
Megabooks @gradcat It‘s an e-library service some libraries have where there are no lines but they you have a limited number of checkouts per month. https://www.hoopladigital.com/ 6mo

#MarchIntoThe70s #Day29 #SchoolsOut Alice Cooper always fascinated me,his showmanship & persona combined with a girls name gave him a “I‘ll be who I damn well please” aura which I totally was onboard with. This book, set in the 80s not the 70s,also has a touch of that vibe, about two friends in junior year at school. After a night of LSD,one disappears before turning up next day acting strange. By the end of the year Abby is convinced she‘s possessed.

I‘ve read a number of books in 2019 that I have enjoyed, but this is my favorite for the year so far. I loved it. It had a definite Stranger Things vibe to it (hence my Funkos...). I loved all of the 80s references, the humor, and also the fact that it had aspects of old school horror, but nothing that would cause nightmares. This was a lot of fun!

Amazing! From the neon drenched, mall cruising, pop song first half, where we meet these high school friends and follow them around typical ‘80‘s life, fun and endearing -through the brutal climax; this is a masterclass in managing tone. Like a rollercoaster gearing up to the first drop, you‘re enjoying the levity of their friendship and youthful indiscretions, until you realize, very slowly, you‘re at the precipice of horror and not ready for it.

Oh dear! #whoops is all I can say. Since I joined #Audible in October 2016, you can see from the above charts and graphs that I‘ve become a tad #obsessed with #audiobooks! Kaye It‘s a bit addicting, isn‘t it ? I joined in 2015, but have stopped my membership a few times because I go a bit Hog Wild on the sales, etc and melt my charge card. Then I feel guilty and stop buying for awhile, but gradually end up signing up again. I like audiobooks. They‘re so handy . Nice to read anywhere at any time. I even brought my iPod and earphones the last time I was in the hospital. Good distraction . Plus I relisten a lot. (edited) 11mo
MoniqueReads305 I cancelled my membership a couple of months ago because I have a large backlog and wanted to force myself to listen to some. But they had a discount for 3 months and I rejoined because I wanted Harry Potter on audio. 11mo
Megabooks @Kaye Totally agree! It is so addictive. I‘ve even gotten my dad into it, and he listens to books on my account. I‘ve spent the last couple of years, until I got sick, living a 10-12 hour drive from my parents and loved to pick a book to actually finish on the trip! They‘re just so handy when you need some company. 😊👍🏻 I‘m sorry you‘ve been in the hospital. I know from personal experience it sucks! 💜💜 11mo
Megabooks @MoniqueReads305 I should probably listen to my backlog as well, but I don‘t think I‘m strong enough to drop my membership. 😆🤷🏻‍♀️ I hope you enjoy HP. Audio is such a great way to reread books. 11mo
Zelma The only bad thing about my minuscule commute is that I can‘t listen to audiobooks. It‘s too short to get into anything so I just listen bit of podcasts and the radio. 11mo
Kaye @MoniqueReads305 You sound like me. I cancel, then see a sale to sign back up so start all over again. I think I‘ll just stay in it this time. That way I‘m ready when the sales start. You can‘t see them if you‘re not a member. 11mo
Kaye @megabooks. I got my husband hooked. Now he listens a lot. He has a long drive to work, plus he listens on his lunch break. Sorry about your health issues also. Thank goodness for audiobooks. They can sorta get your mind on other things so they help. 11mo
britt_brooke Love it!! I joined last year and am getting ever closer to Master. 🙌🏻🎧🤓 11mo
Kaye @Zelma There are some shorter things on there. I‘ve purchased all of Donald Davis‘ books. He‘s a bit like David Sedaris, in that he tells short stories about his life. He‘s a great narrator. Then there‘s Kathryn Tucker Windham. She‘s the same. They‘re both southern so it‘s really neat listening to their accent and stories of growing up down south. 11mo
MoniqueReads305 @Kaye I hate that you can only see sales as a member. I think I might stay this time until I have all 8 books. And then try to leave again. 🙄 11mo
Megabooks @Zelma I‘d have preferred to have a shorter one, but audiobooks were the biggest upside!! 11mo
Kaye Yep, I know. I‘m not sure why they do that. You‘d think they‘d get more customers if people could see the sales. Plus non members can‘t see the daily deal book any longer. I guess I‘ll just stay in this time. I get the 2 credits a month because they‘re a bit cheaper . If I need to, I‘ll cut back to the one a month. I‘ve never read Harry Potter ..😱. I might be the only person left on earth that hasn‘t. 11mo
Megabooks @Kaye Thanks! Yes they do help! And the doctor I‘ve been seeing is a little over 2 hours away, so it‘s good to have them when I go see her. 11mo
Megabooks @britt_brooke Awesome! I love those little encouragements! 11mo
melbeautyandbooks I love audiobooks too! I get most of them from the library, however I still have audible. Another bookish habit I can thank Litsy for. 11mo
Megabooks @melbeautyandbooks That‘s great that you can get most of them from the library! My library has a smaller audiobook collection. And this is definitely a #blameitonlitsy for me as well, especially @LitHousewife who I haven‘t seen on here in awhile. 11mo
melbeautyandbooks @Megabooks I get most of mine from Hoopla at one library. I find that Libby/Overdrive doesn‘t have that many. I also get some from my other library using 3M/Cloud library. I‘m fortunate to have 3 libraries to choose from. Hopefully @LitHousewife is doing ok. 11mo
Megabooks @melbeautyandbooks One of my libraries has Hoopla, but the sound through my speakers isn‘t as good. I haven‘t tried in a year though, so maybe one more time. I checked in with Jennifer about six months ago, and she was busy with a promotion at work, so hopefully that‘s still the case! 11mo
Billypar I love that 'months' is now your unit of measurement. Forget the 24 in 48 challenge- you should start a yearlong audiobook challenge: maybe the 2 in 12? 😁 11mo
Megabooks @Billypar 🤣🤣 I would do that, but I‘d probably not have time to read print books, and I enjoy that too much as well! 2017 was a seriously heavy reading year for me. I don‘t know if I could ever match an average of 20 books a month!! 😱📚🔊 11mo
melbeautyandbooks @Megabooks I agree that Hoopla‘s sound quality isn‘t as good as Audible‘s on my little waterproof Bluetooth speaker. It sounds fine on my car speakers and my sound bar. A promotion is great and also lots more work. Good for her. 11mo
Reviewsbylola Impressive! 11mo
Megabooks @melbeautyandbooks It‘s not good on my Bluetooth either. Plus I get worried losing my place with no breaks. 11mo
