My Best Friend's Exorcism
My Best Friend's Exorcism: A Novel | Grady Hendrix
Abby and Gretchen have been best friends since fifth grade, when they bonded over a shared love of E.T., roller-skating parties, and scratch-and-sniff stickers. But when they arrive at high school, things change. Gretchen begins to act . . . different. And as the strange coincidences and bizarre behavior start to pile up, Abby realizes theres only one possible explanation: Gretchen, her favorite person in the world, has a demon living inside her. And Abby is not about to let anyone or anything come between her and her best friend. With help from some unlikely allies, Abby embarks on a quest to save Gretchen. But is their friendship powerful enough to beat the devil?

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A weirdly relatable, kitschy horror story. Abby and Gretchen, etc remind me so much of my friends only we are the slightly younger TLC-Chasing-Waterfalls-era. But the 80s references still hit. Some scenes were legit gross, but overall, it was less scary than expected. I‘m glad to have given Hendrix another go after not enjoying Final Girls Support Group. Curious to hear what my #bookclub thinks. This was *my* spooky October pick!

LeahBergen I didn‘t think Final Girls was very good either but I did like this one! I also liked Southern Book Club which you may like as it‘s set in the ‘90s. 5mo
britt_brooke @LeahBergen I may give that one a try - thanks! 5mo
Reggie Final Girls Support has been my least favorite of all of his books. 5mo
britt_brooke @Reggie That is good to know! I‘ll def try him again at some point. 5mo

Never got around to watching this last Halloween but now I‘ve remedied that! Thought it was good but I think there were some differences from the book…read it in 2017 so my memory is fuzzy on the details. Loved the music!

Christy2318 I liked this one. Totally Killer on Prime has the same feel. Kind of Back to Future meets 80s slasher movie. 5mo

This was fun- a novel of friendship set nicely in the 80s wherein one friend gets possessed by a demon and only her best friend realizes what‘s happening and tries to save her. I mostly listened to the audio, but had to finish with print because I‘m too impatient! The print book is designed like a yearbook too - perfect! #scarathlon #spookyghostclub also 2 bingo lines for #bookspinbingo ! +61pts

I have held on to this book for an entire year in order to have it for #Scarathlon . I laughed, I read parts outloud to my husband, and loved the nostalgia. #31in31 total is 5:40:23 #TeamCryptKeepers @LiseWorks

This was good. There were moments that annoyed me and got to be a bit old and tired. Did it live up to its hype? For me no it didn‘t, still worth the read though.
The writing was good. The story was different in a good way. I would have liked less obscure 80s references. The characters needed some more depth throughout the whole book not just at the end.
3.8⭐️ if you want horror without too much Horror.

If you love 80's horror & the nostalgia of a Gen X childhood then this book is a no-brainer. The characters will remind you of someone from high school, the scenes are horrifically groas & man the sound track would be killer. Personally love how every chapter is a song title

I still love Grady Hendrix. I still really enjoyed My Best Friend‘s Exorcism… except that one bit. I can‘t get past that one bit. If horror books are supposed to give you nightmares, he did his job a bit too well. Full review (with trigger warnings): https://keepingupwiththepenguins.com/my-best-friends-exorcism-grady-hendrix/

Abby‘s quest to save Gretchen is filled with unsettling and creepy imagery. My Best Friend's Exorcism is perfect for those who enjoy 80s horror. And while there may have been moments that interrupted the story pacing, once it got back on track it really took off. If you're a reader who enjoys possession based horror, this is the story for you.

Found out my work friend, who recently invited me to join her IRL bookclub, has been trashing me behind my back. So I lost a friend, a bookclub, and possibly a promotion.

I‘m less than two weeks away from my 40th birthday, which is entirely too forking old for this bullshirt.

This was SO GOOD!! I honestly love just about anything set in the 80s and add in some teenage angst and horror and I‘m sold! I wasn‘t really expecting this to be as funny and touching as it was at times. The ending was especially surprising and made this so much more than a standard horror novel. While this wasn‘t quite as big of a hit with me as my only other Grady Hendrix to date (Southern Book Club‘s Guide), I still enjoyed it! Loved every bit of the 80s nostalgia and campier elements. (How Phil Collins was referenced/invoked brought me great joy. 🤣) At times I found the pacing a little off, but it really might have been a me-not-the-book situation. I‘m interested in reading more of his books for sure. #AAM #AuthorAMonth

I absolutely loved this campy, funny, and nostalgic horror novel set in 1988. My elder Millennial heart was bursting with all the memories of growing up in the 1980s. The balance of horror and comedy is very well done, and Hendrix captures adolescence expertly. What teenage girl hasn‘t thought her best friend was possessed by something truly evil at some point? 😂 Thankfully, some friendships are stronger than any deity, angel or demon. 5⭐️

This was such a fun, nostalgic, self aware horror-comedy! Probably my favorite Grady Hendrix I‘ve read so far - I think the gaudy 80s setting fit with his irreverent tone and pop culture-laden writing best. Even the VHS style cover design is so perfect. I enjoyed the multimedia additions (yearbook pages, newspaper articles) and the framing device and redemption for Brother Lemon that the film adaptation left out.

This is my favorite Hendrix if you‘re looking for #AuthorAMonth. The #audiobook narration is amazing, and this cover art on the paperback is fantastic!

Abby and Gretchen first bond as kids over ET and rollerskating, but now it‘s 1989 and they‘re sophomores. One night they drop acid and Gretchen gets lost in the woods. When they find her in the AM, something has changed, but Abby is the only one who sees it. Can their friendship save Gretchen?
