How to Start a Fire
How to Start a Fire | Lisa Lutz
34 posts | 35 read | 74 to read
From a bestselling writer, a story of unexpected friendshipthree women thrown together in college who grow to adulthood united and divided by secrets, lies, and a single night that shaped all of themWhen UC Santa Cruz roommates Anna and Kate find passed-out Georgiana Leoni on a lawn one night, they wheel her to their dorm in a shopping cart. Twenty years later, they gather around a campfire on the lawn of a New England mansion. What happens in betweenthe web of wild adventures, unspoken jealousies, and sudden tragedies that alter the course of their livesis charted with sharp wit and aching sadness in this meticulously constructed novel.Anna, the de facto leader, is fearless and restlessmoving fast to stay one step ahead of her demons. Quirky, contemplative Kate is a natural sidekick but a terrible wingman (If you go home with him, might I suggest breathing through your mouth). And then there's George: the most desired woman in any room, and the one most likely to leave with the worst man.Shot through with the crackling dialogue, irresistible characters, and propulsive narrative drive that make Lutz's books so beloved,How to Start a Fire pulls us deep into Anna, Kate, and George's complicated bond and pays homage to the abiding, irrational love we share with the family we choose.

One of those books were nothing really happens... you just follow the lives of three women and the ups and downs of the friendships. I liked it, but didn‘t love it. I do, however, love this book cover.

Three women meet in college and remain unlikely friends through two decades. Surviving men, kids, jobs, heartbreak, death, alcoholism, abandonment...that takes a pretty strong bond. And though tested, this novel portrays the necessity of friendship (and a sense of humor) above all else. 4⭐️

I love audiobooks, so I've decided to take the #24in48 #roadtrips prompt & choose 3 books where people take trips. Bandit, who was my road trip buddy, is presiding.
How to Start a Fire - This book starts off with a road/camping trip that bonds the three women.
The Lowells of Massachusetts - If Perceval Lowle hadn't sailed to America, there would be no Boston Brahman family.
A Hundred Thounsand Worlds - A mother and son take an eventful road trip.

mjdowens Bandit looks to be your perfect navigator🐕 7y

Why am I so obsessed with this book? It's a weird love. The narration is excellent, but the characters are pretty unlikable. The story structure is interesting, but there are better ones. This is my fourth library checkout/casual listen. I'm really baffled. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

Bookcation74 I love Lisa Lutz's Spellman books but this one didn't really work for me... have you tried 7y
Megabooks @Bookcation74 Lol, yes! I actually own that one. (2 for 1 audible sale) I fell asleep to it last night (purposely). 7y

Day 15 of #riotgrams : It is virtually impossible to surprise me with plot twists, making today's theme a particular challenge. Luckily, DH noticed the spine decoration of How to Start a Fire. Presto—a twist! Also luckily, being twist-resistant doesn't diminish my love of mysteries. #favoritetwist #booklover

The book shows you experts of three women throughout their friendship. What's great is that the friendship is believable. It's not perfect but it feels real. There's a certain type of suspension that is also placed throughout the book. Like there's something hiding in the pages.

Last update 4.5🌟 I was concerned this audiobook would be difficult to follow because the plot jumps to different points in time, but it really wasn't. The narration is superb! Three women become friends freshman year in college 1993, and it follows their lives, weaving in and out of different times and characters, until 2014. They weren't always likable, but I did root for these women.

brendanmleonard Great review! 8y
lute I loved her Spellman series but I could not finish this. Just couldn't get through it. 8y
Megabooks @lute I'll have to check that series out. I'm sorry you didn't like this one. 8y
lute She probably wanted to do something different. And I don't blame her for that. I'd still pick up her next book. The Spellman series is probably a little formulaic but I liked the characters. I didn't like the characters in this book. 8y

This novel's main focus is on the ups and downs of strong female friendships. I will admit, I have a special place in my heart for novels with plots like this one. I recommend this book for any woman of any age 😊

This is a very entertaining book about a group of unlikely female friends. It follows them from the time they meet at UC Santa Cruz all the way into adulthood. The dialogue is fantastic and the characters are engaging. This book is hard to put down.

Like The Girl on the Train, the book's main characters were wholly unlikable yet together, they told a weird, incongruent, messy story that I could not stop reading. Part mystery, part character study, part ugly facets of life with a bit of unrealism thrown in, this is a book I won't soon forget.
