And it’s armed. Plum Kettle does her best not to be noticed, because when you’re fat, to be noticed is to be judged. Or mocked. Or worse. With her job answering fan mail for a popular teen girls’ magazine, she is biding her time until her weight-loss surgery. Only then can her true life as a thin person finally begin. But when Plum notices she’s being followed by a mysterious woman in colorful tights and combat boots, she finds herself falling down a rabbit hole into the world of Calliope House, a community of women who live life on their own terms. Reluctant but intrigued, Plum agrees to a series of challenges that force her to deal with the real costs of becoming “beautiful.” At the same time, a dangerous guerilla group begins to terrorize a world that mistreats women, and as Plum grapples with her own personal struggles, she becomes entangled in a sinister plot. The consequences are explosive. Part coming-of-age story, part revenge fantasy, Dietland is a bold, original, and funny debut novel that takes on the beauty industry, gender inequality, and our weight loss obsession—from the inside out, and with fists flying.

This was a different book than I expected. Plum Kettle has many struggles as she faces how other people treat fat people. I liked the parodies of Waist Watchers and the Baptist Diet Plan. Loved the supportive women at Calliope House.

The first half was good, so many places for Plum to go and grow, then it was a slog

Thanks so much for the lovely #KindLitsy book, @britt_brooke — This one has been on my radar for a long time!

(Funny thing — when I went to claim it, it turns out I already own it! I was quite shocked; for the life of me I don‘t remember ever buying it! So, I‘ll be getting a gift credit and choosing another TBR book in your name — I‘ll keep you posted! In the meantime, Dietland gets bumped up the reading schedule. Thank you! 💜💜💜)

3.5 or 4 ⭐ for me. Reminded me a lot of V for Vendetta, for the way a character is recalibrated from societal norms (in this case, cultural control of women's bodies, e.g. beauty/fashion/weight loss industry, male gaze, etc.) via a tortuous process. But the blurb compares it to Fight Club and the author includes Fight Club in the acknowledgements. I've only seen the movie, but I didn't see much similarity... 🤷‍♀️ maybe I should read the book.

Cinfhen We are doing a BIG buddy read of Fight Club in March #SpringFling! I can add you to the list (edited) 6mo

Ok- is it wrong to say I felt a little like being a Jennifer would feel empowering? Wrong, yes but there is something cathartic about a revenge scenario! Loved Plum and the women of Caliope House. The return of power and freedom to those who have been without it for so long. Not the fluffy read I had assumed it was by the title- so much more!! Loved! Also the shout out on the p**** blacklist to my pig of a US Representative DeJarlais was nice!

Plum Kettle just wants to stay under the radar and not be noticed. Despite years of dieting, she is still overweight. She dreams of the day she can finally undergo bariatric surgery and drop the weight. Then she‘ll start her real life.

Meanwhile, bad men start disappearing. Their bodies turn up and an organization known only as Jennifer takes credit. Jennifer is every woman terrorized by rape culture. And she‘s pissed.

I tried. I really and truly did. This book was not worth the pain. It was pain that came from being well executed, if that makes sense, but I wasn‘t interested enough in the plot to power through. Plus, it‘s now very overdue at the library. 🙀🙀🙀
