20th Century Ghosts | Joe Hill
104 posts | 141 read | 4 reading | 99 to read
Imogene is young, beautiful . . . and dead, waiting in the Rosebud Theater one afternoon in 1945. . . . Francis was human once, but now he's an eight-foot-tall locust, and everyone in Calliphora will tremble when they hear him sing. . . . John is locked in a basement stained with the blood of half a dozen murdered children, and an antique telephone, long since disconnected, rings at night with calls from the dead. . . .Nolan knows but can never tell what really happened in the summer of '77, when his idiot savant younger brother built a vast cardboard fort with secret doors leading into other worlds. . . .The past isn't dead. It isn't even past. . . .

(2005) What a terrific collection. I especially liked "Pop Art," whose premise feels like a high-concept bad idea but turns into something surprisingly affecting. And "Voluntary Committal" is just wow.

bthegood The Black Phone is movie - haven't seen it yet - will read stories first 🙂 10mo
swynn I didn't know about the "Black Phone" movie until I picked this up. I see it's available on Amazon Prime, so I have access and will check it out. 10mo

Some of the stories in this collection I felt a little “meh” about. That being said, I think this is a great collection as a whole. There are some stories that I am going to be thinking about for a long time to come. I love when authors make me look at life at a different angle & Joe Hill always does this.

This collection of short stories is quite varied so the reading experience remained quite fresh.

This seemed like a perfect purchase for October. I loved Heart Shaped box and Horns by this author. I'm sure I'll enjoy this as well.

As with any short story collection I‘ve read, I liked some of these stories more than others, but I am very happy to say I liked every single one at least a little.

All are a little creepy, a couple could be considered horror, and some are actual ghost stories. My favorites: 20th Century Ghost (such a cool ending), You Will Hear the Locust Sing (heebie jeebies), The Cape, and Voluntary Committal.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

vivastory Did you see the movie Black Phone this year? 1y

Today I went and saw The Black Phone with my two oldest. (20 & 17) and it gave us all some scares! After we got home, I fired up the kindle so we could read the actual story from the tagged book. Both were good but for once, the movie actually really enhanced the original story. Def reccomend if you like suspense and startles.👌

BarkingMadRead Ohhhhh I haven‘t read it yet, maybe I‘ll wait to watch the movie after I read the book! 2y
KathyWheeler I read the story years ago and liked it.I remember seeing the trailer and not being interested in the movie. But for some reason I didn‘t connect it to the Joe Hill story. Now, I may have to see the movie. 2y

Ooh I loved it! Some of the stories were horror, some…not so much. What an amazing group of short stories; I think Pop Art and You Will Hear the Locust Sing are my favorites. But honestly, all of them have that something that make each stand out in its own way.

It's not often I read a short story collection and like all the stories, but I thoroughly loved all 15 stories in this collection. The topics and themes vary, from ghosts to insects to a creepy old man who collects people's last breaths. Creative, fun, and creepy! 👻

I will be using these for #Screamathon @4thhouseontheleft and to get points for #TeamHarkness in #Scarathon2020. @StayCurious

I also set my goals for #cyoreadathon with @Sace and I'm excited to get October started. 👻

#2020Book36
Like most short story collections, this was a fairly even mix of great stories and just okay stories. Based on what I know about Joe Hill (and the fact that he's Stephen King's son), I assumed these stories would be much scarier, but none were more than just a bit unsettling. The best story by far is "Abraham's Boys," so I highly recommend checking out that one.

This was a good story collection. Most of the stories had an element of horror, but not all would be classified as horror. All of the stories were enjoyable though some were better than others. As I was reading I realized that I had previously read "The Cape" in graphic novel form. I think I enjoyed it more in the graphic format.

My favorite stories were "Best New Horror", "My Father's Mask", and "Voluntary Committal."

BookishMe Interesting! His novels kinda scare me (more frightful than his father's, methinks!) I will check this out ;D 4y

This collection was awesome! Joe Hill really has a flair for horror, and there are all different kinds of horror. Some are very gory and bloody amd some are oh so beautifully subtle. Also hits 3 bingo squares (new pet, family reunion, ugly cover)

BookwormM Sounds good hubby loves horror short stories I am always looking for new collections 4y
jessinikkip @BookwormM I think he would definitely love these. Some of them arent scary at all. Some of them are psychological and the mind playing tricks. And some are downright scary. 4y
BookwormM Sounds good he doesn‘t like ones that are sexual if that makes sense he likes monsters and psychological any other recommendations greatly appreciated 4y
jessinikkip @BookwormM check out the tagged collections as well. Scare Street has published two series, Terror in the Shadows and Short Horror Stories. Several volumes in each on Amazon. I enjoyed them as well. 4y

This book is excellent. I will probably finish it tonight. The Cape has a great twist that upon reflection is a narrative consistency.

RohitSawant Love this one. I often dip into it for a reread. 5y
vivastory @rohit-sawant I finished it last night. Definitely a new favorite collection! Nearly every piece hits the right note. I can't wait for his new collection, & Tremblay's! 5y
vivastory @rohit-sawant Have you watched NOS4A2? I'm planning on checking it out this weekend 5y
RohitSawant @vivastory Excited about Tremblay's collection too! And no, I'm holding off checking out the show until I finish the book. I'm over a quarter of the way in and it's crazy good! He mentioned in a video once that NOS4A2 was like his thesis on horror and him embracing his dad's legacy and it shows. Already a new favorite. 5y
