(2005) What a terrific collection. I especially liked "Pop Art," whose premise feels like a high-concept bad idea but turns into something surprisingly affecting. And "Voluntary Committal" is just wow.

I so dig the simplicity of this cover

Some of the stories in this collection I felt a little “meh” about. That being said, I think this is a great collection as a whole. There are some stories that I am going to be thinking about for a long time to come. I love when authors make me look at life at a different angle & Joe Hill always does this.
This collection of short stories is quite varied so the reading experience remained quite fresh.

This seemed like a perfect purchase for October. I loved Heart Shaped box and Horns by this author. I'm sure I'll enjoy this as well.
As with any short story collection I‘ve read, I liked some of these stories more than others, but I am very happy to say I liked every single one at least a little.
All are a little creepy, a couple could be considered horror, and some are actual ghost stories. My favorites: 20th Century Ghost (such a cool ending), You Will Hear the Locust Sing (heebie jeebies), The Cape, and Voluntary Committal.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Watched The Conjuring 2 and read 3 of the short stories out of the tagged this afternoon! #TeamSlaughter #Scarathlon2022 @Clwojick

I'm off in a couple of hours to get lunch & go to the theater to watch the adaptation of Joe Hill's Black Phone from his excellent debut work 20th Century Ghosts. I've heard only good things about it & I really like the creative team involved.
Today I went and saw The Black Phone with my two oldest. (20 & 17) and it gave us all some scares! After we got home, I fired up the kindle so we could read the actual story from the tagged book. Both were good but for once, the movie actually really enhanced the original story. Def reccomend if you like suspense and startles.👌

My audio book this week
Ooh I loved it! Some of the stories were horror, some…not so much. What an amazing group of short stories; I think Pop Art and You Will Hear the Locust Sing are my favorites. But honestly, all of them have that something that make each stand out in its own way.
We're gonna hit the spooky stuff pretty hard on the podcast this month. In episode 17 we land on a #BOTM for October, and I volunteer to read The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, to get us into the spirit of things. Check it out in the link below, or listen on Spotify or iTunes!

It's not often I read a short story collection and like all the stories, but I thoroughly loved all 15 stories in this collection. The topics and themes vary, from ghosts to insects to a creepy old man who collects people's last breaths. Creative, fun, and creepy! 👻

I finally nailed down my official list for #BookSpinBingo for October. @TheAromaofBooks This is the first month I'm taking advantage of the free spaces instead of picking 5 more books.
I will be using these for #Screamathon @4thhouseontheleft and to get points for #TeamHarkness in #Scarathon2020. @StayCurious
I also set my goals for #cyoreadathon with @Sace and I'm excited to get October started. 👻

Like most short story collections, this was a fairly even mix of great stories and just okay stories. Based on what I know about Joe Hill (and the fact that he's Stephen King's son), I assumed these stories would be much scarier, but none were more than just a bit unsettling. The best story by far is "Abraham's Boys," so I highly recommend checking out that one.
This was a good story collection. Most of the stories had an element of horror, but not all would be classified as horror. All of the stories were enjoyable though some were better than others. As I was reading I realized that I had previously read "The Cape" in graphic novel form. I think I enjoyed it more in the graphic format.
My favorite stories were "Best New Horror", "My Father's Mask", and "Voluntary Committal."
This collection was awesome! Joe Hill really has a flair for horror, and there are all different kinds of horror. Some are very gory and bloody amd some are oh so beautifully subtle. Also hits 3 bingo squares (new pet, family reunion, ugly cover)

#Jojen doesn‘t seem to think that #lmpbc is as important as I do. He makes getting through these stories difficult 😩

I really enjoyed this read. Thanks @LauraJ for choosing it for #lmpbc @collegecatlady @JoScho It also works for #scarathlon #teamstoker @TheReadingMermaid
“And how about a little thanks for you, the reader... The only way I can think to repay you... is with the offer of one more story.” -Joe Hill
This book is excellent. I will probably finish it tonight. The Cape has a great twist that upon reflection is a narrative consistency.
One of my favorite short story collections is on sale for $3 in e-book format! If you like weird and/or creepy, snag this one!

Slacking again. Day 8 of #sisforseptember is #spooky and that's one of my favorite things.
This short story collection is full of fun little spine tingleing, skin prickling tales of messed up people and supernatural events. Love, love, love Hill's flavor of spooky!

2🌟 This book just wasn't t for me. I don't care for generally care for short stories, but love horror. I thought this would be a nice change of pace.
My life today. I am day 2 into taking care of 2 kids AND a husband. Headphone are in place and I am entering a world more crazy than my own. #audiobooks
@BookishTrish look what came in the mail! I love it!!! So excited to read this book and I love the bookmark too! #litsypenpals
Picked up the final Joe Hill book I didn‘t already have!! Now I just need to find the time to read it!
I found this among the 200 unread books on my Nook, and I haven‘t read a short story collection this year... so... here we go.
20th Century Ghosts by Joe Hill is an awesome short story collection that has a little something for everyone! The stories range from sweet and heartfelt, to horrifying and unsettling. To top it all off, many of the stories have paranormal elements woven into them.
