Joe Hill‘s writing has an ironic sense of humor about it.

This book exists, yet people talk about The Dinner by Herman Koch having “unlikeable characters?” 🤷🏻‍♀️

The first book, Murder as a Fine Art was amazing!
I just started this, the second book, and it‘s going to deliver the same amazing reading experience.

Where did Bernadette go?
Back to the library, without my finishing it.
I borrowed the audiobook... most boring book I‘ve ever... Kept falling asleep, but each time I would wake up, it wouldn‘t seem that I had missed anything. Finally, I woke to the narrator singing an “unapologetically religious” song. The character went on to say that what her mom called, “Churchy People” were “actually oppressed.”
Did I have an Christian book snuck on me? DNF

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks The first two sentences!! I just laughed out loud!!! 🤣🤣🤣 5y

I finished reading The Secret History last night.
It‘s everything I‘ve ever wanted a book to be... moody, brooding, atmospheric. The characters are pretentious and tragic, yet so real that you expect to see their reflections in shop windows downtown.
I‘ll never be able to get it out of my mind.

I just discovered that author, Brad Parks lives in a nearby city where I used to live, Staunton, VA. Closer Than You Know takes place there and in surrounding Augusta County, so I can‘t wait to read it!

Sheryl63 He had a series out several years ago, where he was a reporter, it was wonderful. He references to it in this novel. The main character is reading one of them while in Jail. I can't remember what the name of it was. But it's worth reading if you liked this one. 6y

One of the books I‘ve been reading is These Shallow Graves, picked for me by my husband. I‘ve really been enjoying it. The main character, Jo is a strong-willed young woman who isn‘t going to be ruled by social constructs.
My cousin, Ella gave me this notebook and handmade the bookmark that‘s on it. I‘ve been writing in it several times a day. I don‘t think I‘ve ever enjoyed journaling so much! 💕

1. I love paperbacks. I think this is because when I was growing up the only place in town to buy books was the grocery store, so all of my first books were mass market paperbacks.

It‘s taken me two weeks, but with extensive note taking, I finished reading The Romanovs by Simon Sebag Montefiore this afternoon! 748 pages of amazing history that spanned over 300 years.
This is my 43rd book for the year and I plan to try and make that number a nice tidy 45 by Jan. 1st.

Outlander | Diana Gabaldon
post image

Should I give up on Outlander? I‘m on Chapter 13... 28% of the way through it and not enjoying it at all. From what I‘ve heard, the main character isn‘t going to get the chance to go home anytime soon. I‘m uninterested in the characters, and in addition to all the sexism, the term “lassie” is grating on my nerves every time it‘s said. I‘m not that into barbarous men in kilts. 😒 👎

RachelAmphlett Have to admit, I‘ve got a lot of friends who are hooked on this series, but it‘s not for me. I struggled with my Mum‘s copy of Cross Stitch when it was published. Wish I did like it, but yeah... no 6y
LinaLovesLit @RachelAmphlett I‘m relieved that it‘s not just me. I‘m seeing where some people have gotten 400 pages in before giving up. I don‘t think I want to invest more time than I already have. ☺️ 6y

Sue Woohoo! I hope that whatever you pick up next is awesome! 6y
Caterina Congrats on a smart bail! I found Outlander so-so, but that's only because the audiobook narrator is amazinggggg, or else I would've bailed very early on! It was a fun bus/walking/cooking/cleaning audiobook for me, but otherwise wouldn't have been worth it! 6y
bookloo I tried Outlander this and felt the same way. It was sooooo boring to me, and the slang was an annoyance. I didn‘t even make it as far as you did! 😅 (edited) 6y
Reviewsbylola Glad you decided to bail. There‘s definitely no point in forcing yourself through. I finished Outlander but bailed on the second book I think. 6y

Victoriahoperose I really liked the first book, but it took awhile to get into. But, as I️ for more into it, the rest of the books just lost me. The Goldfinch is an excellent choice! 6y
