All the President's Men
All the President's Men | Carl Bernstein
Beginning with the story of a simple burglary at Democratic headquarters and then continuing with headline after headline, Bernstein and Woodward kept the tale of conspiracy and the trail of dirty tricks and dark secrets coming - delivering the stunning revelations and pieces in the Watergate puzzle that brought about Nixon's scandalous downfall. Their explosive reports won a Pulitzer Prize for "The Washington Post" and toppled the President. This is their book that changed America.

What a weird experience!!! I feel like I'm in a warp zone - traveling back and forth between the early 70s and now. After reading this book, I've come to appreciate the media in trying to find the truth about crooked politicians. It took more than a year for the whole truth to come out, but Woodward and Bernstein kept at it. I learned so much. When the Prez starts firing left and right AND people start resigning, Prez is protecting his illegality.

This is so 70s I can't even. Entertaining read, though a bit unstructured as far as providing an overview of the Watergate investigation goes. I recommend reading the Wiki article on the Pentagon Papers before reading this, unless you already know details of the Pentagon Papers publication in '71.

Bob Woodward: Yes.
Deep Throat: You've done worse than let Haldeman slip away: you've got people feeling sorry for him. I didn't think that was possible. ...
Bob Woodward: Yes, we know that. And if we're wrong, we're resigning.

Even decades later, this is a thrilling account of investigative journalism. It‘s also particularly timely considering all of the political investigation is currently happening and the current administration‘s feelings about the press. This book is such a great example of why free press is so important to a democracy.

I started this several weeks ago & laid it aside for various reasons, until today. First, to (mis)quote Mark Twain, for the parallels between Nixon & Trump, "History doesn't repeat itself, but it often rhymes." I thought I knew what Watergate was about, & why it was scandalous. I was wrong. This account is eye opening. To say that Watergate was about a break-in of the DNC Headquarters, is like saying the Mueller investigation is about Trump ?

vivastory naming his daughter Ivanka. Dirty politics, tenacious journalism & a resonant lesson of the indispensable democratic safeguard of the fourth estate. 10mo
Samplergal So true. I reread this over the summer and the parallels are crazy! 10mo
vivastory @Sweettartlaura sounds intriguing. Thanks for the recommendation! 10mo
Sweettartlaura It is - also written by a newspaper journalist of the time, as well. A little more insider/tabloid-ish, but that gives it some extra flavor. Enjoy! 10mo

One assignment I give my reading class is to read in a genre they don't usually read. I do it too. Last year I read a football book and an Amish romance so I am running out of genres! Politics was one of the only options left so I went with this (now) classic by the journalists who broke the Watergate scandal. 50 pages in and I've learned so much already! In school I basically learned "Nixon was impeached, something something Watergate."

EloisaJames A fascinating book! 2y

I wasn't alive during Watergate, so while I knew the basics, this book was a fascinating look at how this time unfolded. I was particularly struck with parallels of the current president: attacks on the media, an us vs them mentality, a core group devoted to a person more than a country. It was also fascinating to read how slowly the investigation was brought to light.

What I liked about this book was also what I kind of didn't like. It's very detailed, so I got bogged down at times. Written as the Watergate events were unfolding. In fact, when published, it didn't even include Nixon's resignation. Ford wasn't VP yet. It's strictly from the perspective of investigative journalism. I'm sure I'll eventually read their follow-up book, The Final Days. My only non-fiction book so far for my #birthdaychallenge (1974)

Good movie. Of course a lot was left out (otherwise it'd have been too long), but the gist of the Watergate story was there. And I'm sure you all don't think I'm weird for noticing the books 📚. Texreader I used to practice media law and went to these amazing seminars where they would have all these people from these amazing cases and points in history come talk.
