It was really interesting to learn about the maritime history of the area, and the author‘s reflections on his own history were poignant and thought-provoking.
pickAmazing. It‘s been awhile since I stayed up half the night because I couldn‘t put a book down. Tran writes compellingly about her experience as an immigrant to America, the struggle of balancing different cultural expectations, and the everyday joys and sorrows of her childhood and young adulthood.

Music teacher reading!
bailedI got a few chapters in and decided that was enough. I‘m not quite sure why I didn‘t like it, but it just seemed depressing and wasn‘t really holding my interest. Maybe now just wasn‘t the right time for this book.
New favorite podcast! I love poetry, but have had a difficult time finding new poets I like. But no longer!

Summer re-read! It‘s been years since I read this series, so it‘s time for another go at it.
pickDefinitely one of the best music books I‘ve found so far! It‘s mostly about teaching music, but I found it helpful in my own practicing as well.
pickAs a beginning voice student, I found this to be a really helpful guidebook to how my body is actually structured and how that affects singing. I also definitely had some misconceptions about where stuff is in my body. Did you know your diaphragm is inside your ribcage right under your heart? I didn‘t.

so-soThis was a pretty good book really, but I didn‘t enjoy it as much as the last few I‘ve read recently. The author seemed to think that if they didn‘t make a musical reference every other sentence the reader would forget the book was about music, which annoyed me. I also didn‘t really find the book interesting until I was about 200 pages in, which seemed like a long time. But it did get better, and by the end I liked the story.
pickI love Jamie Ford‘s books. They‘re always such a perfect balance of bitter and sweet; light and dark. This story follows Ernest Young, a Chinese-American who is raffled off at the 1909 world fair to the owner of Seattle‘s most famous brothel. Now, many years later at the 1962 World Fair, Ernest and his wife must reconcile their past with the present. Certainly worth the read.
Isn‘t this a lovely turn of phrase? “...loitering in the shadow of the future.” I‘m in love with this book already.
If anyone‘s wondering why I‘m posting all of a sudden, it‘s because I‘m on winter break from school, and actually have time to read things now 😅

pickReminiscent of Middlemarch by George Eliot, Wives and Daughters explores ideas of the late 1800s, and the relationships between family and social classes using a compelling story. I love long, wordy books exploring relationships, so this was right up my alley, but if you like a fast-moving story, this is NOT the book for you.

Guards! Guards! is one of the few Terry Pratchett books that my local library inexplicably does not have. Pratchett is one of my favorite authors, so I‘m happy to finally get my hands on this, but I‘m also a little sad because it‘s one of the last that I‘ll have the pleasure of reading for the first time.
pickSince I‘m a new fan of the podcast, I thought it would be fun to give the book a try, and I was not disappointed. It was weird, unpredictable, and funny. Most of the time I had absolutely no idea what was going to happen next, and was surprised in the best way possible.
pickThis was a fun read! Robyn Okrant spent 2008 living by every word that proceedth out of the mouth of Oprah, and wrote a book about the experience. I thought it was thought-provoking and very entertaining.
pickSometimes I just want to read something purely for entertainment value, and this fit the bill pretty well. It tells a good story that‘s sad and uplifting, with a little bit of humor now and then.

Sad to see this in the paper today. 😔 Richard Peck was one of my favorite authors growing up. I read his books over and over, and still own most of them.

pickAfter a month and a week, I've finally finished Middlemarch! This fascinating novel is set in a rural English town in the 1830s, and Eliot's rich and diverse cast of characters come from every walk of life. I especially loved how complex the characters were, and how their choices shaped their future. I must admit there were some parts that moved really slow, but in the end, it was all worth it.

pickI'm loving this Bloody Jack series! This latest installment has Jacky running her own ship (for awhile) and getting accused of piracy.
pickI loved this book! The narrator was so funny, and I even learned a bit about German occupation of the channel islands in WWII.
A book passed on to me a few years ago. The copyright is 1990, so it's not exactly in the latest style, but I still learned to fishtail braid from it.
