Van Gogh's Ear
Van Gogh's Ear: The True Story | Bernadette Murphy
108202 posts | 631 read | 24 reading | 436 to read
BOOK OF THE WEEK ON BBC RADIO 4 PRIMETIME BBC2 DOCUMENTARY WITH JEREMY PAXMAN On a dark night in Provence in December 1888 Vincent van Gogh cut off his ear. It is an act that has come to define him. Yet for more than a century biographers and historians seeking definitive facts about what happened that night have been left with more questions than answers. In Van Goghs Ear Bernadette Murphy sets out to discover exactly what happened that night in Arles. Why would an artist at the height of his powers commit such a brutal act? Who was the mysterious Rachel to whom he presented his macabre gift? Was it just his lobe, or did Van Gogh really cut off his entire ear? Her investigation takes us from major museums to the dusty contents of forgotten archives, vividly reconstructing the world in which Van Gogh moved the madams and prostitutes, caf patrons and police inspectors, his beloved brother Theo and his fellow artist and house-guest Paul Gauguin. With exclusive revelations and new research about the ear and about Rachel, Bernadette Murphy proposes a bold new hypothesis about what was occurring in Van Goghs heart and mind as he made a mysterious delivery to her doorstep that fateful night. Van Goghs Ear is a compelling detective story and a journey of discovery. It is also a portrait of a painter creating his most iconic and revolutionary work, pushing himself ever closer to greatness even as he edged towards madness and one fateful sweep of the blade that would resonate through the ages.

My dear fellow Littens,

I dare to ask you for your inputs and ideas. We are extending our childrensbook section in the bookshop and I'm working on a list on books we might get in the near future for our young customers.

Now I'd like to ask you which books do your children enjoy the most? What do you think should we have to offer? What do your teens like to read? I also want to have something in stock that would interest boys.

So, hit me!

Bookwormjillk My kids are older now but they could never get enough graphic novels. 2d
Jari-chan @Bookwormjillk Thank you! I've already noted down some interesting graphic novels. So I'm going to look for some more. 2d
Chelsea.Poole My boys love the “battle books” which imagine which would win if two animals fought, for example ‘Tiger vs lion‘ 2d
See All 11 Comments
Chelsea.Poole Also sports biographies: Leo Messi, football and baseball stars, etc. 2d
Jari-chan @Chelsea.Poole Thank you so much! That's very helpful, I don't think I have enough of those. 2d
AnnCrystal Some childhood favorites:

Frog and Toad Together
Arnold Lobel

Owl at Home
Arnold Lobel

Little Daylight: A Fairy Story
George MacDonald, Erick Ingraham

Brothers Grimm: Two Lives, One Legacy
Donald R Hettinga
2d
AnnCrystal Teenage favorites:

Amelia Atwater-Rhodes (early works, haven't read her in years).

The Sweep Series
Cate Tiernan
(edited) 2d

DogMomIrene When I was a middle school library specialist, the students couldn‘t get enough science-fiction and fantasy. Check out the Alex award winners too. Those are books written for adults, but with a strong crossover to YA. Ready Player One won a few years back. 5h

Be careful what you wish for. Is there a conduit to another dimension? What happens when you unknowingly open a line of communication with an unknown correspondent? Unexpected consequences. This short story is spooky. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

What happens when a mother can‘t bear the grief of her loss? She learns the truth about what really happened and it gives her a new purpose. Not a happy purpose, but new understanding of how she should move forward. Are there ghosts involved? Maybe. This is a sad, spine tingling short story. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

#RantTime

With the proposed elimination of library, museum, humanities programs, and PBS funding, among other entities, it is imperative that voices are raised against these measures. My lifeblood is all about humanities—I‘m a librarian, after all—and it is terrifying that my skills are considered to be unimportant to the government. I‘d rant more, but I‘ll save that for another day.

Translates as: The White Spot. An Instructin to antiracist thinking.

I got angry, I got sad and I felt shame. But I've also learned a lot about racism in Germany (Switzerland isn't any different when it comes to that), where it comes from and also, what we can do about it. Sadly, many things the author warns about, have already come true. That's why it's so important to read those books. Even if it's uncomfortable.

Hello Littens. It's #StartASpark day. I thought I would post about something creative this time. I watched a video on Youtube the other day (will post about that too), where a couple of artists did a challenge of redesigning book covers. I really liked that idea. And it gave me a thought. Can we make coloring pages of books that we read? The answer is yes.

If you do audiobooks and love to be artsy, why don't you try this out.
