Kissing Tolstoy | Penny Reid
post image
Pickpick

What a cute book! I loved Russian literature in undergrad so to read about other people who love it as well was fun.

There were some loose ends that weren‘t tied up at the end like, what was Luca going to do with the grant money? How was his family going to react to meeting Anna? Those aren‘t necessarily consequential to the story as a whole though, so you can treat those questions as a choose your own adventure.

BookishTrish ... and why does the title say Tolstoy and the cover show Pushkin? 7h

The kids are out of the house, it‘s quiet except for the relaxing sound of the fish tank burbling, I have a fresh pot of coffee and ooh look the cat! Also bills, dishes, laundry, a recently borrowed Penny Reid novel, Litsy! There must be something wrong with my brain, preferring to do adulting things than to sit down and write. My brain must be on summer break with my students.

During the summer the City teams up with the school district to provide free lunches in the parks every day for kids. They also have a story time with it and each family gets a hard copy of the book!

Today we read Shark Lady about a woman scientist who persisted to prove to others that sharks aren‘t scary and ugly, but are beautiful and wonderful creatures. #Zeek and Charlotte both loved the story and enjoyed their lunch. 💖

I‘ve been reading this for about 4 months now and it‘s time for me to just move on. It‘s cute. I love the main character‘s sarcasm, I just can‘t get into it. I have the physical copy but thought I would try the digital version. That didn‘t work and since there is another person waiting for it I decided to just return it and give up. Iñ

This was totally a #blameitonlitsy (or more like blame it on BFF @LokiDokey ) read.

I don‘t know why I‘ve never read this series before especially since there is a mysterious guy in a hoodie on the cover. I really enjoyed it. The book was lighthearted, even with the deaths of Vladimir‘s parents, and full of quirks and puns. Seriously, he‘s a vampire and was watching Buffy at one joint 😆. I will definitely be reading more of the series.

LokiDokey Yea! I'm glad you liked it ♥️♥️♥️ 4d
Peddler410 First, these are so fun! Second, there is a companion series — The Slayer Chronicles. Third, the author is transgender and now goes by Zac Brewer. (edited) 4d

If I were to be a super villain I think I would pick Griselda Blanco. Or La Madrina, the black widow. She was the drug lord who established the cocaine trade from Colombia to Miami and she was a ruthless killer.

This book goes into detail of her life, her loves, how she became big and how she was brought down. I ordered it in English since my Spanish isn‘t 100% so while I understood most of it, I‘m sure I missed some details.

RestlessFickleBookHoarder I want to say they did a series about her and it's on Netflix. I have no idea if it's good or not. I've tried to read many books in Spanish about the drug cartels and I never seem to finish them. 2w

I almost banned these two goobers from the library today. #Zeek was rude during story time and then both him and Charlotte thought it would be fun to climb the shelves. 🙄😡 Why is parenting so hard sometimes?

I almost but not quite fractured my toe on Sunday. It‘s swollen and hurts and the dr said it will take 4-6 weeks to heal. So basically all summer 😫

While that means more time for reading and writing, it‘s less time for gardening, walking, hiking, and all the other heavy duty house projects I had planned.

For now I‘m going to sulk next to my flower bed and listen to Circe. When the kids get back this weekend I‘ll try swimming.

We are reading Night in the 10th grade inclusion English class that I help out in. The gen-ed teacher recreated a mini interactive holocaust museum and the students went from station to station with a person card. They took a visual tour of Auschwitz, heard a speech by Himmler, learned about propaganda, art, music, poetry and at the end they learned if their person died or not. It was pretty amazing and the students all loved it. ⬇️

LibrarianJen There were also a lot of somber faces and some tears. It was a tough lesson for them, but an important one. 1mo

I want to get away from FB, it‘s not the first time I‘ve said this, but I really want it to be the last! But I don‘t know much about Instagram and I was really active on Twitter back in the day until I had a stalker and had to wipe all my online accounts.

If I have to thinks about searching for something, I have to really want to know about it. I am more present in my own life. 2mo
Zelma I don‘t use a lot of social media. Goodreads only to keep stats on my books (I don‘t chat or review my books nor do I keep a TBR, I just maintain my read list). I did use FB a lot as I am in charge of my library‘s FB page. But I keep a pretty small friend list on my personal page and unfollow/unfriendly/hide posts very liberally. 2mo

I love epistolary novels! I don‘t know what it is about a book written about people writing, and reading those writings, that‘s so intriguing. Maybe it‘s a form of voyeurism.

Dash finds a notebook in the stacks at the Strand and it leads him on a scavenger hunt put together by Lily. They then go back and forth leaving clues for each other and revealing their inner thoughts to each other and meeting each other‘s friends and family along the way.

Now though I‘m torn because Krakaur doesn‘t belong in the Southwest and neither does Rhold Dahl or Cisneros. Dahl and Hayes are both ghost stories and Cisneros is Latino and I don‘t know!!! I should probably just organize by Dewey and be done with it. Any ideas?

One of my Friday night writing group friends gave me a copy of his first book last night! He told me it‘s a amateur and garbage but I don‘t care! You only improve after your first novel, right? Plus no one will read it if you don‘t tell anyone about it. 😊

Annl Plus how many people actually write a novel! 3mo
LibrarianJen @Annl I know right! He just needs a confidence boost. 3mo
Annl We should talk more about writing. I think you write YA and I children‘s stories. 3mo

LibrarianJen @Annl yeah I‘m working on a YA series right now 😊 message me and we can talk! 3mo
Zelma Off topic but I need that mug! 😍 3mo

I finished this one last night. It was a bit more predictable than the first, but it was still really good and more back story was filled in. As soon as my husband finishes it I will dive into the third book in the series.

I‘ve been tired the past few days and can‘t shake it. I haven‘t been able to keep up with chores, work, Litsy, reading etc. The days seem to be going by to fast and slow both at the same time. I realized this morning that my anxiety has been overboard so I think a depressive episode is kicking in. I didn‘t have much of a chance to write last week and I really need the creative outlet to stay balanced. It sucks. I hate this part of me.

BibliOphelia I hear you. Hang in there! Spring is on the way, at least. 😜 3mo

1. It sucks losing a parent. It just does. Been there, done that.
2. Hindsight is always 20/20 when it comes to friends and family no matter who you are.
3. I stayed up way past my bedtime reading this. 😴

Teacher skills come in handy When you have #LitsyLove to respond to, but forgot to bring stationary.

So this was amazing! I haven‘t read the Iliad in a long time, but it always has been my favorite of Homer‘s work. I was nervous at first, especially since I knew how the story was going to end. It was worth it though and it was beautiful, and Frazier Douglas did an exceptional job reading it.

sprainedbrain One of my favorite books and I absolutely LOVE the narration on the audio. 😍 3mo
LibrarianJen @sprainedbrain It is definitely one that‘s going on my all time favorites shelf. I hear Circe is just as good, if not better...I‘m 48th on the waiting list at the library. 😬 3mo
sprainedbrain @LibrarianJen I loved Circe, but Achilles is still my fave. 😃 3mo

This was cute! It revolves around the life of Jordan, co-captain of the cheerleading team who is ok with being out. Cooper is the captain of the football team and he struggles with hiding the fact that he‘s gay and is totally in love with Jordan. Then there is Hannah, Jordan‘s BFF who becomes friends with a new kid who‘s deaf. To top it all off, there is prom! Total HS drama but I like the addition of diverse characters.

Peddler410 YA? Can it go down to middle school? Or is the intended audience adult readers? (edited) 3mo
LibrarianJen @Peddler410 The audience is definitely more for teens. I think it would be fine for an 8th maybe 7th grader. It‘s simple enough that way. There is drinking at a party though so that may be objectionable. 3mo
LokiDokey I'm going to have to recommend this to Dev. Sounds like something she would love. 😁 3mo

It‘s Pi day! 3.14
This is from an old family cookbook that‘s since lost its cover and quite a few pages. I‘ve saved as much of it as I can, including this super delicious recipe!

What‘s your favorite pie? Post a pic and or recipe and let me know! #piday
🥧 🤓

AsYouWish Cinnamon Pie is my favorite! And if cheesecake counts that is my next favorite. 3mo
LibrarianJen @AsYouWish what‘s cinnamon pie? 3mo
PatriciaU Key lime pie is a favorite, along with cherry. Happy Pi Day! 3mo

LibrarianJen @PatriciaU yum to both of those! 3mo
AsYouWish Cinnamon Pie has a cheesecake like texture, but it is made with cinnamon, sugar and a few other ingredients. It sounds really strange, but it is so good. 3mo
LibrarianJen @AsYouWish that actually sounds really delicious! 3mo
