My next two reads: horror and, well, partly horror, of a very different kind. As Claire G Coleman says, all Aboriginal fiction is apocalyptic.
It‘s a tteokbokki & makkoli kind of a night, with NETTLE & BONE for entertainment. The book‘s great so far, but I think I‘m gonna end up reading it too slowly. I‘ve got so many other things going on all of a sudden. Like, last night I watched A HAUNTING IN VENICE in company, and today I laid a laminate floor. Both things took a goodly stretch of time. 🤷♀️
I do love her books! Imaginative, lighter hearted than many such fractured fairy sorts of stories, filled with weird and wonderful and awful characters.
🎉🎉🎉
Love. This. Book.
This is one of my favorite books of the year!!! Thrilled to see this announcement on Tor Books‘ Instagram.
This book was just so much fun! Mixing fantasy with horror, this book swept me into its world. The characters had me laughing out loud. The writing style is superb and filled with hilarious quips during gruesome scenes. I truly enjoyed every second! 5 stars! #scarathlon #creepinitreal #cir
Thoroughly enjoyed this book. I love having such a big backlist of stuff to slowly work through with t kingfisher. I found the characters totally loveable and bizzarre. Not too long either which was great. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
4.6⭐️ This was an amazing story with great characters and a strong FMC. The world building is good but I wouldn‘t have minded a little more detail. Speaking of extra detail, would have loved to have a little bit more information and interaction with the villain. All in all, thoroughly enjoyed. This was also my #BooksSpin for August #BookSpinBingo.
🌟🌟🌟
If you like your fairy tales a bit dark, whimsical and twisty with a side of humor, this is your pick. Some very good elements here with magic, although I found the quest a bit boring at times, which left me putting the book aside.
The characters were fine, the world needed to be explored more deeply for me to get a good handle on it. would have liked more scenes like the goblin market with more magical beings like the toothetaker.
Well THAT'S a new favourite. I'm grateful to the book community members who read this before me and, having thought it would be adventure romp with supernatural animal sidekicks, cautioned future readers it was considerably darker than expected. This braced me for the dark bits and made all the funny bits a delightful surprise. The same humour as A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking shines through, with a strong thread of feminist commentary. 1/2
OMG, information management= info organizer = herding dog.
Info herding dog.
My personality is border collie?! 🤯 🤦🏼♂️

A 30 year old princess who has spent half her life in a convent finally comes to the realisation that the Prince her sister is married to, is abusing her (and likely murdered her eldest sister before marrying the middle sister) and that no one is going to do anything to stop him because of the *political ramifications* so begins her quest to kill him - and what a delightful adventure we go on to make that happen!
Loved this!
A Hugo Best Novel nominee, this story provides an interesting take on the fairy godmother character. I always enjoy books by T. Kingfisher, a.k.a. Ursula Vernon.

So here is my #BookSpin and #DoubleSpin for the August 2023 round of #BookSpinBingo 😊 Nettle and Bone has been on my TBR list for quite some time, while A Promise of Fire was picked on a whim. Here‘s to a good reading month… Happy reading, everyone!
Agnes and the dust witch make for such a fun duo definitely don‘t want to end up on their bad side.
The dust-wife and Agnes not even being slightly subtle while checking out Fenris made me laugh so hard.
Agnes on the next page being all “oh no he got wet” 😏
It‘s me realising it‘s the last day of the month and that I haven‘t started my not quite a book club book for July…
Great opening tho!
This is the book that sucked me back in again after a recent reading slump!
While the world building and plot are both great, it was really the characters that made this one for me. Unique and quirky, but with depth and relatable motivation, the characters felt like they could step right off the page at times.
Overall I absolutely loved this book and cannot recommend it enough!
Re-read this for book club this morning and it‘s just one of my favorite fairytales of all time. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This was just the right mix of creepy fairytale, adventure, and warm found family. I‘ve never read T. Kingfisher before but after this one I‘d like to try more.
Finished this week
Nettle and bone 4 ⭐️
Anatomy 3 ⭐️
Fix the system 3.5 ⭐️
House of Odysseus 3 ⭐️
I absolutely adored this unique, somewhat dark but sweet, fairytale. The grumpy, possessed hen was my favorite. I don't think this book could have been written any better. The author's imagination is fantastic.
An unlikely heroine fighting the most dangerous of villains, one who hides in plain sight. Marra felt like a normal person who just happened to be a princess. She was sweet and took the world at face value. To defeat an evil prince, Marra finds help in unexpected places. I liked the story though Marra‘s innocence was hard to accept sometimes.
May #bookspin complete! @TheAromaofBooks
Quiet Marra is an unlikely champion for her sister who is under the thumb of an abusive prince who also holds the fate of Marra‘s small country in his hands. However not even Marra knows the depths of her own strength as she embarks on a quest in order to save those she loves. Impossible tasks? Easy peasy! Goblin markets? Not a problem! Marra was a tenacious heroine of the best kind and I loved the fairytale world Kingfisher created.
4.75/5 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌖 It starts of a bit slow and boring, but once it picked up a bit I couldn‘t stop listening. #audiobook
The author started this in a grocery store parking lot, by the time she was checking out she had a short story called “Godmother” which had things in common with but was very different from the book.
Readers online wanted to know about the woman with the bone dog…..and years later she wrote Nettle & Bone.
So satisfying. So inventive. I loved this book. 🦴 🐕
A creepy, dark little story that I'll be recommending to everyone ✨
Fun audiobook. I definitely recommend this if you're looking for an entertaining story. Especially if you don't want to dive into a crazy long fantasy series.
#whimsicalreads It's the end of the month, and it's time to discuss our March pick! What did you all think of Marra's journey?!

I wanted to start the book later in the month so I didn't have to wait to finish it. So I started....and finished it today. Lol I liked it so much more than I thought I would. I loved the characters and laughed out loud at them at times. @KateReadsYA great pick! I might not be around for the discussion as I'm having surgery Tuesday & Idk if I'm gonna feel well enough. #whimsicalreads
#ISpyBingo “sword.“
This went in a very different direction than the opening set it up for, which I think was a weird editorial choice, but I still enjoyed it very much. A quest with very high stakes, a lovable group of oddballs, each powerful in their own odd ways, and a touch of romance, which always makes a book better IMO. 😁
Started this last night which was a huge mistake, because I couldn't put it down. 🥱 Sorry, all the other books I was reading! #WhimsicalReads
(I do hope this doesn't turn into a “dig two graves“ sort of story. I want the villain to get what's coming to him!)
Soft pick. Outside my usual reading spectrum. I don't read much fantasy unless it skews more sci-fi. But an enjoyable fairy tale. While not totally my jam, always glad when Litsy gets me to read outside my usual spectrum. And what‘s not love about a bone dog? Enjoyed the feminist take on princess tales. Might join next month! #whimsicalreads @katereadsYA
Marra, in the fairy tale tradition of Rescue by the Sister, sets out with unlikely allies to save her sister from the abusive king who married her.
Wow! I adored this. I loved how all the characters were presented. Marra was so relatable. The world building was just broad enough without being overwhelming. Pacing was great. Fairy tale elements everywhere. Narration was perfect for the tone. My first by Kingfisher, but not the last. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗
Beautifully well written, strange, creepy, and creative. Lovable characters with great chemistry and cheeky, sarcastic banter. Despite their very obvious differences, it just WORKS! Also, I NEED a bone dog. 🥺 My favorite pick and first 5 star read from our #WhimsicalReadsBookClub! Can‘t wait to discuss with everyone! Please join us next month- we are reading The Serpent and the Wings of Night and I have a feeling it‘s gonna be a good one!! ❤️ 5/5
I am surprised by how much I liked this book! It was so well written and a the characters were character I truly enjoyed. Even Bone Dog. I'm so glad @KateReadsYA selected this for our read this month!
Mara‘s family and kingdom is held hostage by the ruthless king on their northern border, she sets off on a journey to save her sister from his clutches. Mara enlists the help of a dust-wife, a magical woman who can speak to the dead, and they collect other friends to help on their mission along the way.
One of the most unique fantasy books I‘ve read in a long time and it has just enough darkness to make the stakes real.
I meant to share this a few days ago. I started reading Nettle & Bone for the #WhimsicalReads bookclub pick this month. It's pretty good so far! The audiobook version was interesting while I brushed Fancy out and trimmed her feet. She decided to roll in the burs in the yard. 🤦♀️ She knows how to work the cute face though. #dogsoflitsy
