Letters From Father Christmas
Letters From Father Christmas | J.R.R. Tolkien
139 posts | 114 read | 1 reading | 84 to read
Every December an envelope bearing a stamp from the North Pole would arrive for J.R.R. Tolkiens children. Inside would be a letter in a strange, spidery handwriting and a beautiful colored drawing or painting. The letters were from Father Christmas. They told wonderful tales of life at the North Pole: how the reindeer got loose and scattered presents all over the place; how the accident-prone North Polar Bear climbed the North Pole and fell through the roof of Father Christmass house into the dining room; how he broke the Moon into four pieces and made the Man in it fall into the back garden; how there were wars with the troublesome horde of goblins who lived in the caves beneath the house, and many more.No reader, young or old, can fail to be charmed by Tolkiens inventiveness in this classic holiday treat.

Each year Tolkien‘s children received letters from Father Christmas, telling tales from the North Pole: how the reindeer got loose and scattered presents all over the place; how the Polar Bear climbed the North Pole and fell through the roof of Father Christmas‘s house, how he broke the Moon into four pieces and made the Man in it fall into the back garden, and all sorts of magic! A must-read! #WinterReadathonDailyChallenge Day 6

This collection of absolutely charming Christmas letters that Tolkien wrote to his children will become a yearly re-read for me. I loved his masquerading as Father Christmas and the imaginative stories he concocted of the goings on up at the North Pole. There are bittersweet moments when he mentions visiting displaced, hungry, cold children due to the war. You can see Tolkien struggling to keep his children‘s spirits high despite dark times.

paulfrankspencer A wonderful book. A great tradition! 11mo

I didn‘t know until a month or two ago that Tolkien write letters to his children as Santa. What a beautiful collection, with his original script and pictures he drew. I enjoyed reading it in the weeks leading up to Christmas.

Andrea4 I was so overjoyed when I found this out too! Such dedication to his kids 😍 2y
Tomigirl44 @Andrea4 Yes - such planning and creativity for his characters, not to mention the amazing colorful and detailed drawings! It was a delight, even reading it on a Kindle (I‘m sure it‘s even better on paper). 2y

Well, I didn‘t hit my goal of 71 books this year, but I‘m hoping to hit that goal 2021. It was a tough one, 2020, I had a few months in which I couldn‘t pick up a book because of stress and anxiety, but I got through it. I‘m just glad I got to read the books I did. For a while I was stuck in the 20s.

The tagged book was my last read of the year and I enjoyed it. A collection of letters from Santa written by Tolkien for his kids.

This was my first Christmas themed book that I've read in a VERY long time. It was a cute book about Tolkien writing Christmas letters to his children as Father Christmas. He included Polar bears, elves, and goblins to the letters to add some holiday cheer to them. Overall, a great holiday-themed book to revisit every year.

This was a pretty adorable book. I think it's great Tolkien had written to his children as Santa to make their Christmas that much more special. The letters themselves are lovely to look at. It's no secret that Tolkien was very creative and had a very active imagination. The characters and stories he came up with were funny and interesting. The personal aspects of the letters also provide a glimpse into daily life in the Tolkien household.

That was a quick and enjoyable read. J.R.R. Tolkien wrote letters to his children from Father Christmas every year. The letters included illustrations, and the content changed with the age of the children. There‘s a fun cast of characters that people the letters, including polar bears, elves, gnomes, and goblins. There‘s even a goblin war. I love the snarky North Polar Bear. #FeastMode

First book finished for the #24b42020

It was actually a reread, though the other times l read it, it was in ltalian translation.
This is such an adorable book. Tolkien's love for his children is so obvious in every words and in the special gift he gave them with his stories and his illustrations.

The last ones, written during WWII and knowing Priscilla was finally too old to still write to Father Christmas, are so sad they stole me some tears.

I love Santa stories and Tolkien, so Letters From Father Christmas was great. I think it's one of my favorite books I've read all year! Tolkien wrote letters in a uniquely shaky script as Santa for over 20 years for his four children. It's a beautifully imaginative story about the goings-on in the North Pole filled with elves, goblin wars, and a very clumsy Polar Bear. https://onthebl.org/2019/12/18/letters-from-father-christmas-by-j-r-r-tolkien/

It is the cutest holiday book I have read for a long time. It is a collection of actual letters written to Tolkien's children by Father Christmas. Of course we know who really wrote the letters. Each letter was usually accompanied by a drawing. Such as Santa's house at the North Pole. Most letters had a story about someone or happenings at the North Pole.⬇️

Patchshank I forgot all about this book. I've been wanting to read it, but I decided to save it for Christmas time and then just forgot about it 🤪. Thank you for reminding me.😋 3y
TheSpineView The stories about the North Polar Bear were my favorites. He was always into something. I can just imagine how excited Tolkien's kids would have been to get a letter from Santa. 5⭐ 3y
TheSpineView @Patchshank I loved it! The letters were so inventive and sometimes funny. I loved thecstory about how the North Polar Bear set off all the fireworks by accident. 3y
See All 9 Comments
Patchshank @TheSpineView I found it on Kindle unlimited and I've read a few pages of it. So far I like how mishaps are incorporated into the letters. Like with the damaged chocolates. I wonder if there was an accident with the chocolates or if Tolkien would damage the chocolates on purpose to have something goofy to write and have evidence of. Like when parents leave cookie crumbs to show Santa ate the cookies. 3y
TheSpineView @Patchshank Who knows. He had such a brilliant mind. 😊 3y
tournevis I looove this book. It's my favourite Tolkien, by far. 3y

It may not be Christmas, but it feels like the North Pole. In addition to the copies of letters, envelopes, & drawings Tolkien sent to his children as Father Christmas, this Prime edition provided the ability to listen to the letters, too. It was a nice collection from a time when Christmas wasn't about getting the biggest Beebo doll on the shelf, but traditions, stories, and family. We also get some Tolkien world-building as the years pass.
