A well-behaved lady historian ought to avoid haunted forests not plunge into them seeking an invincible weapon of the gods. Ellie Mallory didnt exactly volunteer to prevent the most dangerous artifact of the Ramayana from falling into the wrong handsbut if one has been coerced into an adventure, the least one can do is bring along a few friends. Constance Tyrrell has new daggers stuffed in her garters, a thirst to discover everything India has to offer and absolutely no interest in Dr. Neil Fairfax, Ellies scholarly stepbrother. Meanwhile, Neil finds himself wrangling a magical sword along with his increasingly tangled feelings about a certain doe-eyed danger gnome. Then theres Adam Bateshandy with a machete, perpetually shirtless, and about to face some unsettling ghosts of his past. Together, they must follow the footsteps of an ancient hero from the festivals of Puri to the shadowy depths of a legendary forest, racing a brutal colonial administrator with allies of his ownincluding the complicated and mysterious Mr. Jacobs. It will take all Ellies resourcesfrom a working knowledge of practical chemistry to a highly excitable dogto beat a new sort of demon to the place where a holy power has lain hidden for two thousand years alongside the secret history of the woman at the heart of Indias greatest story. Pick up Arrow of Fortune and plunge into the next epic historical fantasy adventure in the Raiders of the Arcana series.

The adventures continue as the whole gang travel to India to meet Connie‘s family & find an artifact of immense destructive power before the Order.

Such a fun series! Love the relationships between all the characters (although 1 particular aspect felt rushed), loved the spotlight on Connie‘s family & the plight of India under British rule. & really enjoying the depth given to 1 of the villains, making for a really interesting conflict. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

julesG I hope that villain gets more spotlight and/or his own novella/spin-off. 5d
julesG I also enjoyed seeing more of Neil and Connie, but their relationship felt a bit rushed. 5d

BookmarkTavern @julesG Oh yes! Something like a short prequel showing how he got to where he is at the beginning of the first book. 5d
BookmarkTavern @julesG Yes! And how the ending seemed to be saying, oh I‘ve actually loved you the whole time?! Your POVs certainly didn‘t set that up particularly well! 😂 5d
julesG Right?! In both cases. 5d
julesG I have to say I liked bumbling Neil more in this one. In the second book he had 'John Hannah in The Mummy' vibes, but the character grew out of this in Arrow of Fortune. 5d
BookmarkTavern @julesG Yes. He was still clumsy, but he had such depth in this one. His worry about how Ellie and everyone might see him differently, his acceptance of Ellie and Adam‘s relationship was all great. 5d

Ellie and Adam, together with Neil and Connie, are in India this time. With the help of Connie's extensive maternal family finding the Arrow of Fortune should be as easy as pie. Obviously it's not as easy, otherwise we'd have got a novella and not a full-sized novel.

This book is full of adventure, humour, romance, a pinch of spice, and a lot of heart.
