The Underground Railroad
The Underground Railroad: A Novel | Colson Whitehead
From prize-winning, bestselling author Colson Whitehead, a magnificent, wrenching, thrilling tour de force chronicling a young slave's adventures as she makes a desperate bid for freedom in the antebellum South Cora is a slave on a cotton plantation in Georgia. Life is hellish for all the slaves, but Cora is an outcast even among her fellow Africans, and she is coming into womanhood; even greater pain awaits. Caesar, a recent arrival from Virginia, tells her about the Underground Railroad, and they plot their escape. Matters do not go as planned — Cora kills a young white boy who tries to capture her — but they manage to find a station and head north. In Whitehead's ingenious conception, the Underground Railroad is not a metaphor — a secret network of tracks and tunnels has been built beneath the Southern soil. Cora and Caesar's first stop is South Carolina, where both find work in a city that at first seems like a haven. But the city’s placid surface masks an insidious scheme designed for its black denizens — and Ridgeway, the relentless slave-catcher sent to find her, arrives in town. Forced to flee again, Cora embarks on a harrowing journey, state-by-state, seeking true freedom. Like Gulliver, Cora encounters different worlds at each stage of her journey — Whitehead brilliantly recreates the unique terrors for black people in states in the pre-Civil War era. The Underground Railroad is at once a kinetic adventure tale of one woman's ferocious will to escape the horrors of bondage, and a shattering, powerful meditation on the history we all share.

Phenomenal book. At times it was difficult to read just because the treatment of Black folks was so horrifying, but it needed to be read. Tragedy happens to Cora over and over, and yet somehow, she continues on. A book about strength, perseverance, and remembering the role we played (white folks) in creating this disparity and how we now have a responsibility to fix it.

The Huntress and The Opposite of Always (not pictured) were my absolute favourites!

Quite pleased that I got through a biography!!! I adore Enid Blyton and now I know so much more about her!

A short story by a fav of mine, about an artist who meets and becomes interested in a man who he suspects of being the devil. It's sweet!
Suspicions, as an episode, obviously wasn't meant as a Beverly episode, but I'm glad she got a weird mystery. Plus, we meet scientists from species where we never do! (We will remember you Dr. Reyga 😢)

After a long sabbatical, I picked up this book during a vacation and boy, it was extremely riveting and absorbing from the very first sentence. Well written, well researched, this books smashes all sugar coating and presents a raw, honest and gruesome picture of slavery yet not scaring 5he reader and holding them to cheer on for the protagonist all the way. It is a must read for all - to understand about what we are capable of. Both good and bad.

I began reading this shortly after I began watching Outlander. This leads me to see far too many similarities between the two that are more than just mere coincidence. There were plenty of differences, but the similarities made it hard for me to honestly lose myself in this book. LeFay's writing style, however, was great. All in all, I was left wanting and was a bit disappointed at how abruptly it ended.

The first night in Chicago my usually cold every night and have to use portable heater self used the fan instead of the heater ( I have both in my room, lol, and I think maintenance has finally turned the heat off permanently for the season) I wake up with a very sore neck and right shoulder and pain radiating all the way down into my hand and fingers. Tramadol didn‘t help and heat helped a little. You guys remember this app? Who still has it? Lol

Once they hear it‘s because it‘s the first night I slept under a fan they‘ll probably laugh. I am just going to try more heat 🙄🙄🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️ and maybe move my fan to the other side of the room and put it on oscillate. You live and you learn, lol 👍🏽👍🏽😞😞😂😂 4w

In 1934, on his way to London after visiting his friend Agatha Christie, the young publisher Allen Lane stopped at the station bookstall at Exeter St Davids and saw that all the books on sale were of a poor quality and overpriced.
What was needed, he realised, were good books at a price everyone could afford.
