A Game of Thrones: A Song of Ice and Fire
A Game of Thrones: A Song of Ice and Fire | George R. R. Martin
110 posts | 230 read | 6 reading | 29 to read
A NEW ORIGINAL SERIES, NOW ON HBO.Here is the first volume in George R. R. Martins magnificent cycle of novels that includes A Clash of Kings and A Storm of Swords. As a whole, this series comprises a genuine masterpiece of modern fantasy, bringing together the best the genre has to offer. Magic, mystery, intrigue, romance, and adventure fill these pages and transport us to a world unlike any we have ever experienced. Already hailed as a classic, George R. R. Martins stunning series is destined to stand as one of the great achievements of imaginative fiction.A GAME OF THRONESLong ago, in a time forgotten, a preternatural event threw the seasons out of balance. In a land where summers can last decades and winters a lifetime, trouble is brewing. The cold is returning, and in the frozen wastes to the north of Winterfell, sinister and supernatural forces are massing beyond the kingdoms protective Wall. At the center of the conflict lie the Starks of Winterfell, a family as harsh and unyielding as the land they were born to. Sweeping from a land of brutal cold to a distant summertime kingdom of epicurean plenty, here is a tale of lords and ladies, soldiers and sorcerers, assassins and bastards, who come together in a time of grim omens. Here an enigmatic band of warriors bear swords of no human metal; a tribe of fierce wildlings carry men off into madness; a cruel young dragon prince barters his sister to win back his throne; and a determined woman undertakes the most treacherous of journeys. Amid plots and counterplots, tragedy and betrayal, victory and terror, the fate of the Starks, their allies, and their enemies hangs perilously in the balance, as each endeavors to win that deadliest of conflicts: the game of thrones.BONUS: This edition contains an excerpt from George R.R. Martin's A Clash of Kings and a preview of A Game of Thrones: The Graphic Novel.Amazon.com ReviewReaders of epic fantasy series are: (1) patient--they are left in suspense between each volume, (2) persistent--they reread or at least review the previous book(s) when a new installment comes out, (3) strong--these 700-page doorstoppers are heavy, and (4) mentally agile--they follow a host of characters through a myriad of subplots. In A Game of Thrones, the first book of a projected six, George R.R. Martin rewards readers with a vividly real world, well-drawn characters, complex but coherent plotting, and beautifully constructed prose, which Locus called "well above the norms of the genre." Martin's Seven Kingdoms resemble England during the Wars of the Roses, with the Stark and Lannister families standing in for the Yorks and Lancasters. The story of these two families and their struggle to control the Iron Throne dominates the foreground; in the background is a huge, ancient wall marking the northern border, beyond which barbarians, ice vampires, and direwolves menace the south as years-long winter advances. Abroad, a dragon princess lives among horse nomads and dreams of fiery reconquest. There is much bloodshed, cruelty, and death, but A Game of Thrones is nevertheless compelling; it garnered a Nebula nomination and won the 1996 Locus Award for Best Fantasy Novel. So, on to A Clash of Kings! --Nona VeroFrom Publishers WeeklyIn a world where the approaching winter will last four decades, kings and queens, knights and renegades struggle for control of a throne. Some fight with sword and mace, others with magic and poison. Beyond the Wall to the north, meanwhile, the Others are preparing their army of the dead to march south as the warmth of summer drains from the land. After more than a decade devoted primarily to TV and screen work, Martin (The Armageddon Rag, 1983) makes a triumphant return to high fantasy with this extraordinarily rich new novel, the first of a trilogy. Although conventional in form, the book stands out from similar work by Eddings, Brooks and others by virtue of its superbly developed characters, accomplished prose and sheer bloody-mindedness. Although the romance of chivalry is central to the culture of the Seven Kingdoms, and tournaments, derring-do and handsome knights abound, these trappings merely give cover to dangerous men and women who will stop at nothing to achieve their goals. When Lord Stark of Winterfell, an honest man, comes south to act as the King's chief councilor, no amount of heroism or good intentions can keep the realm under control. It is fascinating to watch Martin's characters mature and grow, particularly Stark's children, who stand at the center of the book. Martin's trophy case is already stuffed with major prizes, including Hugos, Nebulas, Locus Awards and a Bram Stoker. He's probably going to have to add another shelf, at least. Major ad/promo. After not being able to settle into a book for a week now, I picked up one of my favorites for another reread. As soon as I started it, I felt like I was IN IT, and that‘s the feeling I love when I read. So even though I have review books and newly purchased books and library loans waiting for me, I‘m reading and listening to this one again because I‘m a mood reader and this is what I want to do 🤷🏻‍♀️

BethM I too am a mood reader and the only thing holding my attention right now is GoT. We‘re hosting a a read along- chapter a day if you feel like hopping forward to book 3! #readingwesteros @5feet.of.fury is our venerated leader. 1mo

I can see why so many people love this but it really was more of a frustration to me than anything. If it wasn't for #ReadingWesteros and taking this one chapter at a time I totally would have bailed (for the second time). It felt like this was just a book of people making stupid irrational decisions, realizing they were dumb, and then doubling down hard.

5feet.of.fury 😂 Sansa bothered me a lot my first read (2013ish), she still bothered me at times but Ned & Catelyn should have really known better. 6mo
HeyT @5feet.of.fury I mean Sansa is barely a preteen so it's expected but her parents? smh 6mo
5feet.of.fury @HeyT completely did not notice what a dunce Ned was the first time 😂 6mo

oh man, what a journey this has been. I initially started this way back in 2016 and I am so happy I became motivated to read these books again. Mr. Martin is such a phenomenal writer, I have nothing but praise for his writing and complex characters.

I can't wait to dive into the second novel in the series!

I don't think I'll be participating in the tag (too much pressure) but reading a chapter a day sounds like a good motivator to get back into these books 👀

Theme: Love taken to extremes can be dangerous 💔

Okay, so my choice for this prompt would definitely be A Game of Thrones, because when it really comes down to it, most of everything that happens is a result of Cersei and Jaime's toxic love for each other! 😱

I‘m kind of on the fence of whether or not to continue with the series. I will admit it took me a little while to get used to Dotrice‘s narration, but as the book went along, I‘ve grown to like him. As is expected of a fantasy novel of this length, there are a lot of people and places to keep track of. By the end though, it was getting quite good! Setting up the events for book 2. This was between a pick and a so-so for me.

I read this after I watched the first season so the characters were already established in my mind. It was fairly true to story if I recall and I liked how each chapter was based/ titled on one character like scenes.

No spoilers, and I‘m not signing any petitions or anything...

But if the show truly went the way Martin had planned the books to go, I‘m not sure I‘m still interested in waiting.

🤷🏻‍♀️

hermyknee Emilia Clarke on Game of Thrones finale's shock twist: 'I stand by Daenerys' : https://ew.com/tv/2019/05/19/game-thrones-finale-interview-emilia-clarke/ 5y
Traci1 I agree with you. The only thing is I feel like Martin might be able to work his way round to the ending where it makes more sense and people don't completely go against character to get the story there. There was so much rushing and time jumping - at one point I asked my husband "where the hell are these people and why is Bran there?... and Edmure?!?! And omg is that the kid who wanted to throw everyone through the moon door? Wth is going on?" 5y
sprainedbrain @hermyknee @Traci1 It wasn‘t even the way Daenerys ended up that upset me the most... I can see the foreshadowing, and I can maybe accept that. I‘m so angry about Jaime. Annoyed about what happened with Jon. I‘m flabbergasted by the ending. This whole season was so ridiculously rushed. Maybe I could continue to wait for a freaking book and Martin could get me there. I feel like I‘ve invested 20 years to be totally let down. 😡 (edited) 5y
See All 9 Comments
monogamist_reader I still hope the last two books will be better... 5y
Stacy_31 @Traci1 Okay so that WAS the moon door kid? Because I did a ton of head-scratching on that one! And how did Edmure get there so fast? Who decided these were the people to choose? How did they find out what Jon did if Drogon took off with the body? The whole thing felt rushed and out of context. I hated this season so much. 🙄🙄 5y
krismlars I was unsure about reading the final two books (IF they‘re ever published), but the HBO writers have forced my decision. Even if the HBO plot is what Martin intends for the books, I have to believe he‘ll do it better. 5y
Traci1 @Stacy_31 yeah it was him. I guess those were the heads of each of the big houses that were left standing. Idk. It was bizarre especially with no explanation. 5y
LibrarianRyan the thing is, HBO may have taken direction from Martin, but Martin may change it. He may be saving his big reveal for the books. there are two left to go, and they are not short. Plus there is so much in the books not in the show that have to be considered. It wasn't my favorite season for sure, and an ending I could have happily slept through. 5y
Stacy_31 @tracy1 don‘t worry, all of those questions weren‘t directed at you! I realize it seemed like it. Sorry about that. I figured it was the heads of the houses, but if that‘s the case, why were 3 Starks there? It just didn‘t make much sense. 💁💁 5y

JenlovesJT47 Aerys Targaryen (the mad king), raped Lyanna Stark and murdered her brother, and then attempted to murder their allies–the Starks, Baratheons, and Arryns rebelled and overthrew the king. Do you feel his actions, past and present, are justified? 7y
