Small Gods
Small Gods: Discworld Novel, A | Terry Pratchett
Lost in the chill deeps of space between the galaxies, it sails on forever, a flat, circular world carried on the back of a giant turtleDiscworlda land where the unexpected can be expected. Where the strangest things happen to the nicest people. Like Brutha, a simple lad who only wants to tend his melon patch. Until one day he hears the voice of a god calling his name. A small god, to be sure. But bossy as Hell.

Small Gods is one of my favorites from Pratchett. He takes on religion and beliefs, and the difference between them. In a country dedicated to the god Om, when Om actually shows up as a tortoise, he finds only one true believer - Brutha, the naive novice who believes everything he is told - until he learns - and with knowledge and belief, he changes the world. One of the best, funniest, most insightful and most human books from Sir Terry.

I‘ll admit it took a bit for this one to get going for me, a lot of new characters, only brief cameos of a few we know, BUT I really loved this one once it got going. A great story that will make you think of “organized religion” verses faith in a completely different (but sadly true) way, Pratchett as always pokes at the sacred and reveals the inconsistencies of humanity.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I‘m just at the beginning of this one, I‘m a bit behind. 2mo

julesG @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I'm sure you'll catch up soon. 2mo
Iblu I loved it. The way he portrays religion and the absurdities of some of them as they get interpreted by mankind. Surprised there was not a single female character. Loved Didaktylos (excuse my spelling, I listened to this book) and Forbes was a formidable character. The librarian from Unseen University making an appearance!!!! 2mo
julesG @Iblu You've summed up my thoughts! Shame there wasn't any female character, apart from Brutha's mentioned grandmother. I would have liked to see Pratchett's take on a matriarchal religion. Does him omitting female characters/gods mean he didn't have anything sarcastic to say about them? 😁 I truly love how he described the absurdities of religion. Lu-Tze was cute, and it's the first book featuring him. PS: Vorbis and Didactylos 😉 2mo
Iblu @julesG thanks for the spelling!! I‘m curious, is Lu-Tze a returning character then? I wonder whether the omission of references to matriarchal religion was a kind of admission of a difference and possibly perceived superiority? I‘m not equipped to really say they are better but maybe someone can shed a little light? 2mo
julesG @Iblu Yup, Lu-Tze will return. But not sure in which book. He's like the librarian, shows up now and then. 2mo
TheSpineView I felt like Pratchett was poking fun at the way humans try to quantify a God and not just poking at religion as a whole. 2mo
khooliha It was very weird to revisit this book and see how much of the "taking on characteristics of the shape your inhabiting" rubbed off on the kind of story I like to tell. As for the book itself, I wish there was more to Brutha, I guess. 2mo
DrexEdit I did enjoy this book and was doing all these “Ha!“ and “Too Right!“ and “snort!“ comments throughout. But, it seemed to me that Sir Terry bit off a bit too much to chew with this. He's taking on religion, philosophy, ethics, morality, and grandmothers! So I guess my take, on my first read through this, is that although all the story parts worked together, I still got the sense that it was 2 or 3 stories mashed together. Anybody else think that? 2mo
julesG @DrexEdit Too Right! 😁 2mo
Gezemice I am still working on it, but this is my second read. I read this before I read other Discworld books and I loved it. Revisiting, still so true, but I can appreciate the Pratchettian wit more. Those observations of religion are so astute. In this whole city devoted to a God there is only one true believer? 2mo
Gezemice @Iblu Lu-Tze features prominently in Thief of Time. 2mo
Gezemice @DrexEdit He always had 2-3 stories going. That‘s just how he operates. I personally enjoy the writing and characters the most - the stories are a hit or miss. 2mo
gossamerchild This is absolutely one of my favorites. I feel bad I missed it on this go around, but I'll try to get back to it and actually comment something other than the same thing I always comment :-D 2mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Finally finished! It took me a bit to sink into this one, but I loved it. I was still waiting for the lion to show up at the ending though! 2mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Gezemice That was one of the best observances about religion I thought, a whole city based on a faith, but only one true believer....the rest all going along so they could use the religion to justify whatever they wanted. Sad, but another one of those sadly very true things. 2mo
Gezemice @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Yeah, Pratchett is so good at pointing out the corruption of system, but he does it on a nice, kind way - somehow he is always like, well, that‘s just how things are, and perfectly normal people can do perfectly evil things. Like when the inquisitors all have mugs like “world‘s best dad” and they take up a collection when someone retires. 2mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Gezemice Yes! That was another great bit! 2mo

I think I'm going to go with this book being good, not great. It has a lot to say, but (as I often do) I find myself wishing I liked the characters better. But it has some of my favorite storytelling tropes (might even be the source of my fondness for them!) and I had a good time.

So Small Gods and Witches Abroad kind of feel like opposites, plotting wise. Witches Abroad is very goal-focused, while nearly 150 pages in Small Gods is just... drifting along. Let's you really feel the difference between an active and a passive protag.

Terry Pratchett is one of my favorite authors. Small Gods is one of his books that, while still humorous, deals with a heavy topic (religion) in a way that examines the human condition and why belief is a force to be reckoned with.

“Gods have no one to pray to.”

The Great God Om, while attempting to incarnate as a bull & do some infidel stomping, becomes stuck in the form of a tortoise. He discovers that in the nation of Omnia that worships & fears him, only one young novice actually BELIEVES. Together Om & his believer will examine faith, war, & philosophy & figure out their place in the (Disc)world.

This stands alone from the previous 12, going a bit darker & deeper.

TobeyTheScavengerMonk And I absolutely freaking loved it. #DiscRead #SummerOfShort2 book 3 #TheTurtleMoves (edited) 5mo

“Furnishing was not a priority in the Citadel. Shelves, stools, tables... There was a rumor among the novices that priests towards the top of the hierarchy had golden furniture, but there was no sign of it here. The room was as severe as anything in the novices' quarters although it had, perhaps, a more opulent severity; it wasn't the forced bareness of poverty, but the starkness of intent.” #Bare #QuotsyJune19

‘Time is a drug. Too much of it kills you.‘

And I see Cut-Me-Own-Throat Dibbler‘s distant relative has made an appearance. (But why did Om end up as a tortoise? Is there a higher being - that maybe he could pray to?)

I wonder about influence with this one- it‘s a tiny bit related to American Gods, with belief being like food for the gods.

I enjoyed Brutha, and the way his mind worked. I also liked the childish, spoiled quality of Om, and the fact that most of his church‘s teachings were things he never said or intended.

This isn‘t one of my favorites in the series, but I‘d still consider it a pick.
