Riveted_Reader_Melissa I‘m just at the beginning of this one, I‘m a bit behind. 5y

julesG @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I'm sure you'll catch up soon. 5y
Iblu I loved it. The way he portrays religion and the absurdities of some of them as they get interpreted by mankind. Surprised there was not a single female character. Loved Didaktylos (excuse my spelling, I listened to this book) and Forbes was a formidable character. The librarian from Unseen University making an appearance!!!! 5y
julesG @Iblu You've summed up my thoughts! Shame there wasn't any female character, apart from Brutha's mentioned grandmother. I would have liked to see Pratchett's take on a matriarchal religion. Does him omitting female characters/gods mean he didn't have anything sarcastic to say about them? 😁 I truly love how he described the absurdities of religion. Lu-Tze was cute, and it's the first book featuring him. PS: Vorbis and Didactylos 😉 5y
Iblu @julesG thanks for the spelling!! I‘m curious, is Lu-Tze a returning character then? I wonder whether the omission of references to matriarchal religion was a kind of admission of a difference and possibly perceived superiority? I‘m not equipped to really say they are better but maybe someone can shed a little light? 5y
julesG @Iblu Yup, Lu-Tze will return. But not sure in which book. He's like the librarian, shows up now and then. 5y
TheSpineView I felt like Pratchett was poking fun at the way humans try to quantify a God and not just poking at religion as a whole. 5y
khooliha It was very weird to revisit this book and see how much of the "taking on characteristics of the shape your inhabiting" rubbed off on the kind of story I like to tell. As for the book itself, I wish there was more to Brutha, I guess. 5y
DrexEdit I did enjoy this book and was doing all these “Ha!“ and “Too Right!“ and “snort!“ comments throughout. But, it seemed to me that Sir Terry bit off a bit too much to chew with this. He's taking on religion, philosophy, ethics, morality, and grandmothers! So I guess my take, on my first read through this, is that although all the story parts worked together, I still got the sense that it was 2 or 3 stories mashed together. Anybody else think that? 5y
julesG @DrexEdit Too Right! 😁 5y
Gezemice I am still working on it, but this is my second read. I read this before I read other Discworld books and I loved it. Revisiting, still so true, but I can appreciate the Pratchettian wit more. Those observations of religion are so astute. In this whole city devoted to a God there is only one true believer? 5y
Gezemice @Iblu Lu-Tze features prominently in Thief of Time. 5y
Gezemice @DrexEdit He always had 2-3 stories going. That‘s just how he operates. I personally enjoy the writing and characters the most - the stories are a hit or miss. 5y
gossamerchild This is absolutely one of my favorites. I feel bad I missed it on this go around, but I'll try to get back to it and actually comment something other than the same thing I always comment :-D 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Finally finished! It took me a bit to sink into this one, but I loved it. I was still waiting for the lion to show up at the ending though! 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Gezemice That was one of the best observances about religion I thought, a whole city based on a faith, but only one true believer....the rest all going along so they could use the religion to justify whatever they wanted. Sad, but another one of those sadly very true things. 5y
Gezemice @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Yeah, Pratchett is so good at pointing out the corruption of system, but he does it on a nice, kind way - somehow he is always like, well, that‘s just how things are, and perfectly normal people can do perfectly evil things. Like when the inquisitors all have mugs like “world‘s best dad” and they take up a collection when someone retires. 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Gezemice Yes! That was another great bit! 5y

Pickpick

It is Sir Terry Pratchett's. If you haven't read him, you are missing out. If you have read him, you know why I have read this one many times! A sly poke at religions and some if the history that we forget, like inquisitions and sacrifices. A good laugh as well. #terrypratchett #sirterrypratchett #smallgods #theturtlemoves

Gezemice Oh my god, a Pratchett signature! I am so jealous. Did you get it in person? 😍😍 7y
wordsofbek @Gezemice I was working in the shopping center when he toured many years ago. The bookstore kindly added my choices to his signing pile. I regret not taking the time to be there (stupid work!) However those signatures are some of my most prized possessions! 7y
