A Day of Fallen Night
A Day of Fallen Night | Samantha Shannon
15 posts | 4 read | 2 reading | 10 to read
The stunning, standalone prequel to the New York Times bestselling The Priory of the Orange Tree. Tunuva Melim is a sister of the Priory. For fifty years, she has trained to slay wyrms – but none have appeared since the Nameless One, and the younger generation is starting to question the Priory's purpose. To the north, in the Queendom of Inys, Sabran the Ambitious has married the new King of Hrσth, narrowly saving both realms from ruin. Their daughter, Glorian, trails in their shadow – exactly where she wants to be. The dragons of the East have slept for centuries. Dumai has spent her life in a Seiikinese mountain temple, trying to wake the gods from their long slumber. Now someone from her mother's past is coming to upend her fate. When the Dreadmount erupts, bringing with it an age of terror and violence, these women must find the strength to protect humankind from a devastating threat. Intricate and epic, Samantha Shannon sweeps readers back to the world of The Priory of the Orange Tree, showing us a course of events that shaped it for generations to come.

Happy Monday, littens! πŸ’•πŸ“šπŸ’•

I am only about 200 pages into this one, because I am purposefully reading at a slower pace than usual - I want this book to last! I am absolutely enthralled. It's so so good! #catsoflitsy #chaplin

For being 500 years before the PotOT, it connects incredibly well. Like wow. The wyrms have come, it‘s the Sorrowful Years, a story we know from PotOT. That is usually difficult to portray, but not here. This story followed the firsts direction as a feminist queer fantasy. Felt like more dragons. As an epic again: 846 pages that have much, yet not enough. I felt for Dumai and Glorian the most, how they both affect the PotOT in the future.

Today I went to see Samantha Shannon in conversation with Francesca May and it was AMAZING!!!!!

This is a truly unflattering picture of me, but I'm posting it anyway πŸ˜„

She was so interesting and smart and funny and it was great to hear about her inspirations for Roots of Chaos! Can't wait to finish Priory and read the prequel! πŸ’•πŸ’•

This book is 862 pages of a #chunkster read and I was there for every moment of it. This is a fantasy read that really defines the genre. I LOVED The Priory of the Orange Tree and worried this prequel wouldn't hold up. It did and more to be honest. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 read.

Meshell1313 Oooh yay!! I‘m diving into it soon! Want to make sure I have the time to really enjoy it 3w
KristiAhlers @Meshell1313 I went into work last Tuesday an hour early so I could buy it before the store opened. I then had to set my phone alarm so I wouldn't forget to pay attention to the time. It was so hard having to put it down. 3w

#weeklyforecast @Cinfhen

Continue Count & Swift
Finish The Darkness.

However, the tagged book releases on Tuesday, and as I loved The Priory of the Orange Tree I have a feeling I'll be dropping all my other books to read that!

TrishB It‘s another biggie 😁 4w
jenniferw88 @TrishB I suspected as much! πŸ˜‚ That's partly why it's a Kindle pre-order. 4w
Meshell1313 Same!!! Can‘t wait for Tuesday!! 4w

Looking at GR, I‘m one of only a handful of people panning this book. But after attempting to connect with it for six weeks and 55 percent of the book, I‘m tapping out. Here‘s why. I didn‘t connect with or enjoy more than one character. That one character only makes up a small portion of the book. The writing is ponderous, lugubrious, and dull. I‘ve considered DNFing since about 20%. Around 25% I started to think the pace ⬇️

BarbaraTheBibliophage (Cont‘d) and action would pick up, but it just hasn‘t for me. Life is too short to read books I don‘t enjoy.

I enjoyed two other books by Samantha Shannon, so it isn‘t her imagination or world building overall. It‘s just that this prequel is not worthy of the later book, The Priory of the Orange Tree. I will certainly try more books by the author in the future. As always, YMMV.

BethM At least the cover is pretty? And you taught me a new word! 4w
BarbaraTheBibliophage @BethM πŸ€“ I had the ARC, so didn‘t even get to enjoy the cover. Agreed-it‘s beautiful! 4w
Meshell1313 Oh no! Am looking forward to when it comes out next week. I was hoping it would be as good if not better than Priory. Thanks for your review- it‘s def gonna help me manage my expectations. 4w
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Meshell1313 The ratings on GR are super high β€” 4.62. So you may *love* it. I just could not get into it … even at my busiest times, it never takes me six weeks to read 450 pages. That‘s normally a seven day read for me. 4w

This is a prequel to The Priory of the Orange Tree, which may turn out to be my top read of 2022, so to say I'm looking forward to it is a massive understatement!

Cinfhen It‘s a GORGEOUS cover!!! 4mo
