Perhaps it is unusual to post a recipe (in comments) for Snowman Pie to review a book set in Palm Springs CA. However, this book has been placed in contention for Care‘s Books & Pie “Pie in Literature” Award for 2023. Silliness, right? The best kind! I adored this book - smartly done, hit all the buttons that makes a great reading experience: humor and heart. And pie!

Copper is sleeping again. It was a busy day.

I finally finished this book. It got confusing and frustrating— that whites were so cruel and greedy and amoral. And I couldn‘t make sense of the rambling telling — it was too much, so sad, incredibly evil. And we think NOW is worse?! History just shows us more of the same. Power corrupts. Boggles the brain, and especially the heart.

I am not a fan of mystery/thrillers unless they have the warp and weft of “literary fiction” more than a genre formula. I do understand that defining such is difficult! (At least for me…) this one bugged me from the first page. I enjoyed this ambitious, carefully constructed, clever work of Historical Fantasy and learned a lot about oppressive colonial capitalism; and even more about language. I loved all the mini word translation lessons. Occasionally heavy-handed? Maybe. Too long? For me, yes. I sped it up to 2x for the second half and the main character‘s inner monologue of doubt and confusion grew tiresome. I did appreciate the ending and occasional flashes of humor.
