Despite my extensive interest and consumption of true crime, the case of "the Angel of Death" is not one that I knew anything about prior to reading this book. It reads more like a fictional story, partly because in this case, truth is stranger than fiction; partly because Graeber did such a good job of compiling everything about this case, and laying it out in a way that is both informative and entertaining.

This is one of my favorite #TrueCrime books. I would recommend it to anyone and everyone to read (healthcare related or not!) it would just make me so mad about how this man got away with so much for so long! ... Well, I just watched the NETFLIX; show of it. Of course, it wasn't the “same“ as just how horrendous he was, but I am glad they made a movie version so others (nonreaders can know the story) #CrimeADay

catiewithac Loved this one! 😍 1y
AkashaVampie I didn't watch the movie yet, but did watch the documentary about it. Fucking scary!!! 1y
ElizaMarie @AkashaVampie so, the documentary was probably better than the movie. The Movie was good, but the book went so much more into how much he got away with and how corrupt everything was that allowed him to jump from job to job. The documentary probably did a better job with that than the movie. (if you get a hold of the book, that is the best option) 1y
AkashaVampie @ElizaMarie yeah. I went to watch the movie the other day, but had to shut it off cuz Lucian was freaking out saying it was scary. 1y

“Angel of Death” serial killers are especially sinister to me. You think you are safe and cared for in a hospital, etc., only to be killed by a nurse like Charles Cullen. It‘s truly chilling. #scarathlondailyprompts #killer #teamslaughter

I‘m not a fan of true crime graphic murder books. I can‘t handle the gore. This nonfiction book tells the terrifying story of the prolific serial killer who killed by injecting drugs into the IV bags of his patient, but it‘s not gruesome. It‘s incredibly well-written & hard to put down. Excellent journalism, researched but not overwhelmed by facts. The author tells the story in the style of In Cold Blood, connecting you to the people involved.

BarbaraBB With the comparison to In Cold Blood you sold it to me! 2y

YES!! If you haven't already read this book, please do! It is so good, so well written and easy to follow! I couldn't put it down. True and disturbing story of Charles Cullen, "Angel of Death" who is believed in killing approximately 400 patients over 16 years as a nurse. But the true number can never be confirmed due to lack of evidence. Charlie alone cannot even recall how many or who the patients even were!!

First time reading a true crime novel and safe to say it is not my style. I tried really hard to get into this book even thought listening to the audiobook would help me but I got to chapter 11 and I had to bail. The story itself is quite interesting I love a good angel of death story but I just found myself zoning out instead and thought it best to not force myself into a book I couldn‘t finish

Bk1 of July is done. I‘ll be posting a few reviews tonight, reading has been a great escape the past week. This is a true crime NF about an “Angel of Death” nurse who killed an estimated 300 patients in NJ & Penn. over a 16yr career. This gave me chills, having spent a large amount of time in hospitals myself, I know how easy it would be for a nurse to slip a patient the wrong drugs.Horrifying & terrifying. My #bookspin book of July. #BookspinBingo👇

1. I prefer true crime and classic murder mysteries to horror.
2. This is a true story of a nurse who murdered patients. Nothing is scarier than someone you trust hurting people.
3. I like gory revenge horror films and the Alien movies. But I also love the Wrong Turn series!
4. Tyrannus Basilton Grimm-Pitch, gay vampire from Carry On

Medical thriller prompt in my Popsugar Reading Challenge. I wasn‘t a fan of this one, the second half really dragged on. It is a super tragic story, and it makes me sick to think of how many people swept this under the rug because they didn‘t want bad publicity. This isn‘t my genre I think.

As a nurse I was drawn to this book out of curiosity and the love of thrillers. It baffles me how a nurse can get away with killing patients for 16 years in 5+ hospitals and not one of them tried to pursue him sooner even though it was suspected. This man is right where he belongs. He broke that precious oath we vow to follow.

This could have been a fascinating story, but the writing ruined it completely. There‘s way too much dramatization, even for this kind of book, and I almost got the feeling the author was making an effort to be annoying. The dialogue is all “yeah”, “right”, “yeah”, “right” and there‘s absolutely no attempt at analysis of the WHY, which makes the entire book fall flat. It didn‘t help that the audiobook narrator was also horribly annoying.

Cathythoughts And it‘s still a pick 👍🏻 5y

(Day 8 - #Creep)

*I immediately thought of Charlie Cullen, a nurse who killed about 300 people in his line of work. The weird thing is, he had loads of folks who cared about him (he had a wife & child, unbelievably), but from the first few pages of this book, I found him to be extremely creepy. By the way, for those of you who like true crime, I give this book definite “pick” status + 5 stars.

The story behind this case is chilling on so many levels; from the killer‘s motivation (or maybe the lack of a clear motivation) to the fact that hospitals were more focused on not being involved than in reporting suspicious behavior... 🤬🤯 would probably be accurate representations of my face while reading the book. I think the book could have been edited slightly better, but it was still a very engrossing read. #booked2019 (podcast related)

BooksAtNight I first heard about this case on Parcast Network‘s Serial Killers podcast (episodes 35 &36) where the hosts tried to give some psychological insight to the case. 5y

Read this because a coworker thrust it into my hands. Since we work at a hospital, she thought I would find it sobering and frightening. Which I did – it‘s about Charlie Cullen (the so-called "The Angel of Death"), who was implicated in the deaths of as many as 300 patients, making him perhaps the most prolific serial killer in American history. I felt the writing was a bit weak, though.

Lauranahe I just finished it. I wish there had been more about his life as a child and teen. And the end was very abrupt. Still a terrifying story! 5y

#AprilBookShowers #day14 #TitleWithGood This is a true crime story about a nurse who was definitely not any kind of good. Charles Cullen was a nurse in New Jersey who after a 16yr long career confessed to murdering 40 of his patients, though authorities believe the true figure to be around 400.😧 Amazingly, he was suspected at a few of the hospitals he worked at, but nothing was done except a hush deal & a payoff to make him go away. Shady.😠

An engrossing and disturbing read about Charles Cullen, the enigmatic and emotionally troubling nurse, who was responsible for the medical murders of up to 400 patients, over a sixteen year period.
While I did not enjoy dwelling on the sad nature of his victim's deaths, I was fascinated to learn of the circumstances surrounding his capture and conviction. As the sister of a nurse who works in many of the same units, the reality of this hit home.

Meticulously researched nonfiction telling the story of Charles Cullen, who may be America's most prolific serial killer: his life, relationships, & the trusted confidant who figured it all out. This account is unflinching & unsympathetic toward both Cullen & the hospital admins who "cya"ed rather than pursued an investigation. My tiny complaint: footnotes were in the back rather than bottom of the page, making for frustrating reading at times.

EKonrad This sounds so interesting. Have heard of this guy but not of the book. Would you recommend it? 🤔 7y
Gayan I read this last month and really liked it. I had a huge problem with the hospital admins. 😡 It seemed to have more footnotes than needed but I read it in my Kindle so I just had to click them. 7y
JackieSmith @Ekonrad I did find it fascinating. I enjoy reading about serial killers & nonfiction; so it hit that sweet spot for me. 7y
JackieSmith @Gayan I thought the number of footnotes was to prove the author's credibility rather than enhance the narrative. I agree that some were superfluous. 7y
