Wow!!! I had heard so many amazing things about this book before it was published and I knew I had to read it! This is hands down one of my favorite books. I knew the book was going to be great after only one chapter! There were twists and turns that I never saw coming and you don‘t find out who the killer is until almost the end! I hope the author continues to write books because I can‘t wait for his next novel!

The Killing is one of my all-time favorite TV shows, so when I saw that this (debut, I think?) author was directly involved in writing the screenplay of the original Danish series, I knew I had to check it out. This read JUST like a fictional crime serial, and it was almost perfection. I'm hoping for potentially a sequel, maybe with some of the characters' backstories! 4.5 🌟 #botm

Currently reading The Chestnut Man. I saw something that said: I was going to clean house, but then I realized this book isn‘t going to read itself. Pretty much how I‘m feeling at the moment. I did go to my Physical Fitness class and ran 1.5 miles for the first time ever! So I feel somewhat accomplished today 🙃 Oh, and I‘m really enjoying this book!

Don‘t let the length of this book intimidate you. It is an extremely fast and easy read. Gory? In parts, but that is not the main focus. It is an intelligently written psychological mystery/thriller. I was surprised by the reveals. With some lengthy books, I have found myself wishing for the end. Not so with The Chestnut Man. I could have kept reading and reading and reading. Don‘t miss this one! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Well this was creepy AF. ⁣

After the opening pages I almost gave up because the murders were so gruesome and disturbing (trigger warnings for almost everything!). But I bravely kept going and was rewarded with a dark scandi noir, decently developed characters and a plot that kept me hooked ( and freaked out all the damn time). ⁣

Dolls are ALWAYS scary. ALWAYS.⁣

In an unusual turn of events, I have selected only one book for my #botm box. 😲🤭 I can‘t remember the last time I only picked one! Nothing else spoke to me, but when I read this was from the creator of The Killing, I didn‘t need to read any more.

What did you choose?

lele1432 Thinking of getting this, the Kent Krueger, and the memoir Wild Game! It didn't appeal to me at first, but I liked the sample, and I've been looking for a good, complicated mother/daughter relationship read but haven't had much luck in finding one. Fingers crossed! 3w
Hooked_on_books @lele1432 The memoir doesn‘t appeal to me, but I‘ve read Krueger before and like him. When I get into the right mood, I think I‘ll be quite interested in his book, but I haven‘t been in that mood lately. Enjoying choosing! 3w

Bit long but short snappy chapters made it so readable. You can tell he normally writers for the screen, impressive imagery made for a very vivid read. The story was compelling, mildly gruesome but I don't mind that in the slightest.

8little_paws Yeesh, what is going on with BOTM? I feel like this summer it's been just traditional “women's lit“ type choices. I've been a member since late 2015 and if the fall doesn't start offering a wider range I'm out. Though I did hear a recent interview from the director who said initially they tried to do a diverse selection in the monthly 5, now she said they know what their readers like so why not make all five books closely related so that...tbc 1mo
8little_paws members can get more than one book a month? Well that isolates out readers like me who don't like the traditional BOTM bestsellers but liked the “off the radar“ type picks. Anyways, maybe I'll get the memoir, maybe I won't. It has good reviews but I'm not certain I want to spend a credit on it. 1mo
felinesandfiction @allthingskayla so I Just got These Tender Lands on Netgalley so I'm probably going to skip (unless I really love it). 1mo
KatieDid927 Not really digging the selections for this month either. Meh. 1mo
irre Thanks for posting. I already have arcs of This Tender Land and If Only I Could Tell You so I‘ll probably skip this month. 1mo
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Thank you!!! Are there any nonfiction this month? 1mo
felinesandfiction @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks they discontinued the nonfiction subscription and I believe Wild Game is NF. 1mo
BarbaraTheBibliophage @8little_paws I agree. I miss having a purposeful nonfiction book in the choices. It‘s the whole reason I rejoined earlier this year. Last month I hated the choices but didn‘t skip. Ends up I wanted two this month. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 3w

This is a long story and I must admit it took me some time to get into it. Once I got into it, it was good. The plot takes time to develop but there are many clever twists along the way that make it worth the slog. The ending was so good and tied everything off yet left that slight possibility of a sequel. Theres lots going on so but it all fits together and took me time to figure out who the killer was but I did in the end.

This was a wonderfully atmospheric, autumnal and chilling read.

It took me a while to settle into the writing - the scene changes feel very visual - I could see them playing out on screen, but were initially difficult to follow in print. But I'm glad I stuck with it. It built to become a dark and twisty novel, & I definitely didn't work out who the killer was. I should probably flag that there was disturbing content, with themes of child abuse.

RachelO
I enjoyed getting to know the two main detectives - Hess is a fantastically unlikeable but intriguing character, while Thulin is smart and determined. I feel there's a lot of backstory to both of them which we haven't yet learned, and this could easily become part of a series, which I'd be very happy to read.. I read this as a #NetGalley ARC last month.
