Juneteenth: A Novel | Ralph Ellison

NATIONAL BESTSELLER "[A]n extraordinary book, a work of staggering virtuosity. With its publication, a giant world of literature has just grown twice as tall."--Newsday From Ralph Ellison--author of the classic novel of African-American experience, Invisible Man--the long-awaited second novel. Here is the master of American vernacular--the rhythms of jazz and gospel and ordinary speech--at the height of his powers, telling a powerful, evocative tale of a prodigal of the twentieth century. "Tell me what happened while there's still time," demands the dying Senator Adam Sunraider to the itinerate Negro preacher whom he calls Daddy Hickman. As a young man, Sunraider was Bliss, an orphan taken in by Hickman and raised to be a preacher like himself. Bliss's history encompasses the joys of young southern boyhood; bucolic days as a filmmaker, lovemaking in a field in the Oklahoma sun. And behind it all lies a mystery: how did this chosen child become the man who would deny everything to achieve his goals? Brilliantly crafted, moving, wise, Juneteenth is the work of an American master.

In this country men can be born and live well and die without ever having to feel much of what makes their ease possible, just because so much is buried under all of this black and white mess that in their ignorance some folks accept it as a natural condition. . . .

Sophronisba . . . But then again, maybe they just feel that the whole earth would blow up if even a handful of folks got to digging into it. It would even seem a shame to expose it, to have it known that so much has been built on top of such a shaky foundation. 2y

Happy Juneteenth (observed) U.S. Littens!

I got to work this morning (because it‘s already Friday in Japan) and was happily told to go home.

I‘m going to spend this unexpected day off reading about the history of the Emancipation Proclamation & Juneteenth.

#juneteenth

Susanita What a lovely surprise! We found out around mid day and had to scramble to do tomorrow‘s work too, but it‘s all good. 3y
sprainedbrain Happy Juneteenth! ❤️ 3y
marleed I want to be unretired- just for tomorrow- so I can celebrate this beautiful federal holiday in civil servant style. At about 1500 today, I did give myself a 59-minute rule as celebration! 3y
Gissy MIT will be observed also here in the island! ❤️❤️❤️ 3y

Here's a sample of some of the fun prompts we have for the added June Holiday Themed Reads to go along with #LittenListen Audioathon. Listening to a book with any of these prompts will earn you an additional 10 points. So if you're having trouble deciding what to listen to, check out some of these prompts!

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1jlCcPX1xnC77QYxR7MCxFISiHHtD5MqWkDS7phby...

Traci1 Do we need to listen to them on the day of the prompt or any time within June? 3y
aperfectmjk @Traci1 you can listen to them any time in the month. They do not have to be listened to on the day of. 3y
Traci1 @aperfectmjk awesome! Thanks. 😊 3y

SeaToSkyes Can we combine books/themes? For example, a book about time travel with a bicycle on the cover 3y
aperfectmjk @SeaToSkyes hmmm... are you asking if you can get double points for only listening to one book with multiple prompts? I think we would need to see how everyone else feels about this. 3y
SeaToSkyes @aperfectmjk if no one else wants to do that, that's okay! Just had the thought while looking through the list ☺️ 3y
SeaToSkyes @aperfectmjk I had another quick question: if we listen at a faster speed, do we record the actual listening time for that speed? 3y
aperfectmjk You will record the actual quoted time for the book. Whatever is listed on Libby, Hoopla, Audible, etc. 3y
aperfectmjk @SeaToSkyes opps forgot to tag you, see above. 3y
SeaToSkyes @aperfectmjk thank you! 3y
DebbieGrillo I have 8 points for 8 hours listened. Is this comment sufficient or should I make a separate post? 3y

Posting my list for June's #BookSpin now so I don't forget and end up doing it late.

Changed back to mostly print books with some ebooks for next month. Pretty mad at myself that I was in a reading funk this month and completely failed the bookspinbonanza so very badly. Looking forward to a new month and a new list.

@TheAromaofBooks #JuneBookSpin

TheAromaofBooks Hey funks happen!! I'm hoping to try Bonanza again in the fall, so there is always another chance!! Here's to a better reading life in June!! 4y
Lesanne I feel your pain! I ripped through 4 or 5 books off the bat and then work started getting busy again. Lost all momentum! 4y
InBooksILive @Lesanne I barely read 3 books this month! I usually knock out at least 10. I just could not stay focused in any book I tried 4y

My June Stats! I won‘t tell you how many of those were “planned” in late May, but it didn‘t make 25%. I think I should just stop trying to set goals. I‘m using more audiobooks as my walks and runs are increasing. #june2018

SilversReviews Love the library card you use. 😊 6y
Kaye I don‘t set goals. Ruins the enjoyment of a good book if I know I have a time frame and more books needing to be completed. Reading should be fun, not a chore. It looks to me like you got a lot done in one month and nothing wrong with using more audiobooks. It‘s still reading, with your ears. 6y
Samplergal @Kaye I didn‘t until Goodreads and Litsy. I should just read what I want, although I have some personal goals, like reading 10 Mann Booker winners/finalists. (6/10) and of course the book club books. I‘m trying to downsize, so I‘m trying to read some physical books and let them go. 6y

Samplergal @SilversReviews Thanks. I‘m starting a reading/travel blog and will be using them at times. 6y
Kaye Will you be going completely to kindle and audiobooks then ? Maybe you could sell some of your books and use the money to stock up more of the others. How soon are you leaving ? 6y
mrozzz Great job!! 6y
Samplergal @Kaye not completely to audiobooks. I just can‘t. I have a few books that I will never give up, but yes, mostly audiobooks from the library/Libby. I should try to sell them but usually just give away. I think our time frame is Februaryish. Have to find the right RV first. That‘s where we are presently. It‘s a lot of work 6y
Kaye I‘ll be excited to hear and see photos of your journey. Sounds exciting ! 6y

It's not you, it's me. I am just not in a place right now, when I'm mostly reading at the end if very trying days, to unravel meaning from lots of stream of consciousness. For the same reason I don't think I'd try to tackle Faulkner right now. I'm going to try The Invisible Man instead someday, possibly should have started there.

caitlintx I still have nightmares about The Invisible Man. Not exactly the content of the book, but mostly how dry and awful it was! 6y

The story of a white, race-baiting senator and his deathbed conversations with a Black preacher. Because the story is made up mostly of memories, the narration jumps around quite a bit. But the prose is amazing. And Ellison does not hide his opinion of politicians!
