The Man Who Loved Books Too Much
The Man Who Loved Books Too Much: The True Story of a Thief, a Detective, and a World of Literary Obsession | Allison Hoover Bartlett
In the tradition of The Orchid Thief, a compelling narrative set within the strange and genteel world of rare-book collecting: the true story of an infamous book thief, his victims, and the man determined to catch him. Rare-book theft is even more widespread than fine-art theft. Most thieves, of course, steal for profit. John Charles Gilkey steals purely for the love of books. In an attempt to understand him better, journalist Allison Hoover Bartlett plunged herself into the world of book lust and discovered just how dangerous it can be. John Gilkey is an obsessed, unrepentant book thief who has stolen hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of rare books from book fairs, stores, and libraries around the country. Ken Sanders is the self-appointed "bibliodick" (book dealer with a penchant for detective work) driven to catch him. Bartlett befriended both outlandish characters and found herself caught in the middle of efforts to recover hidden treasure. With a mixture of suspense, insight, and humor, she has woven this entertaining cat-and-mouse chase into a narrative that not only reveals exactly how Gilkey pulled off his dirtiest crimes, where he stashed the loot, and how Sanders ultimately caught him but also explores the romance of books, the lure to collect them, and the temptation to steal them. Immersing the reader in a rich, wide world of literary obsession, Bartlett looks at the history of book passion, collection, and theft through the ages, to examine the craving that makes some people willing to stop at nothing to possess the books they love.

My first read for 2021. Tells the story of a man who is a bibliomaniac. Parts were interesting, the author follows his criminal career and interviews him. He steals rare and valuable books and is in jail multiple times. Interesting fact that many book thieves are never caught

Sometimes the blurbs on a book feel a bit exaggerated. “Compelling with elegant suspense - Erik Larson”. Erik, you did me wrong. Tbh, my beef may be more with the book thief who, like many these days, are deluded into thinking they deserve something for nothing. The underworld of book thievery was interesting but just bolstered my belief that greed and envy are the worst and good people pay the price. (My cheery thought for the day. 😳🤨)

TheAromaofBooks haha sometimes human nature can really be a downer! 😂 At least this one is off the list!! 3y

Challenge 13 of 50: A book on a subject you know nothing about

I know a lot about books. But I know virtually nothing about rare books, book collecting, or first editions. I know nothing about the world of stolen books. This true crime read was a look at the unknown underbelly of the book world and the people who will go to any means to get their hands on rare copies.

Bartlett chronicles the story of a California man who has prolifically stolen rare books. His actions seemed filled with compulsion, self-delusion, and entitlement. I found this quick read interesting.

While interesting, this was ultimately just a so-so for me. The story of an unrepentant rare book thief who feels entitled to steal because rare booksellers overprice and should not be allowed to keep him from acquiring what he wants to feel self-important. Nice look into the rare book field, but Gilkey (the thief) tended to get on my nerves and rouse my anger. 🙄😡

The title of this book is a little misleading. It is a true crime account of a man named John Gilkey, who steals thousands of dollars worth of rare books. IMO, he did it because he‘s a thief, plain and simple, and felt entitled. Still, I‘m giving this a pick because I learned so much about rare books and finished the whole thing in a few hours. Bibliophiles will find something here to like. 4⭐️

Is it bad or wrong for me to find deep solace in books???

Some times can be very difficult, day or night.
Some times need to be alone times, for better or worse.

In those times, which are many and frequent, I turn to books, to read and to write.

*sighs* 🥺😢😔

Marilyncjackson My grandma used to tell us “Books are our friends. Treat them kindly and they will carry you through.” You‘re not strange. Sending you lots of support hugs 🤗 5y
Suetara It‘s perfectly natural, I think, for bookish people to find solace in books, libraries, bookstores, etc.. When I am having a rough day, I head for the nearest book place (happily there‘s a library not to far from where I work). Just by being around books, whether browsing or borrowing/purchasing, I end up feeling better. I‘m sure things are rough right now, but from one who has been there, it does get better, eventually. ❤️ 5y

I found this fascinating and kept sharing tidbits to my son! Crime within the rare/used book world is more common than I thought. This book focuses on one person who passed bad checks or stolen credit card numbers (1990s/early 2000s when it was easier to do) to hoard rare books for himself. His narcissistic nature was really infuriating. The author spent about 2 years interviewing him (sometimes when he was in prison) and others to write this.

So odd that I just started this book about book theft and our local bookstore was just broken in! Several rare books taken and cash register untouched. ValerieAndBooks @LeahBergen Theories include: probably not employees — there are just a few, who‘ve been there many years. But maybe a newer “regular “ customer. I learned a lot about the rare book world, reading this book. But John Gilkey, a book thief, made me so angry I had to put the book down & walk away a few times. I unfortunately have personal experience with manipulators & know how they justify every bad thing they do. Written very well, the author tried to be impartial, it‘s a good read. My #SomethingYouSawOnLitsy for #NonFiction2019 & #ReceivedInALitsySwap for LittenLoveBingo #LLB19 #MountTBR2019

Traci1 I found this guy interesting (not in a good way) because it seemed like his "obsession" really could have been anything. He landed on books, but it seemed to me he could just have easily decided he wanted to collect rare coins or stamps or beanie babies. 5y

I rediscovered this book on my shelves when I reorganized everything and thought it would be a good choice for the "true crime" part of the Reading Women Challenge. It is an interesting peek into the world of book collectors and thieves, and the author had a lot of face time with a notorious thief who never stays incarcerated for long. Also I should say that the world of book dealers and collectors is portrayed as heavily male. @thereadingwomen

ReadingEnvy @Samplergal I know what you mean. Right now anything I feel I have to read is just not doing it for me so I brought home a paramedic memoir that I might read instead of everything else! 5y
ReadingEnvy @cocomass we can do it... Maybe 5y
ReadingEnvy @Lizylindz03 omg are you the rare unicorn of a book monogamist? 5y
ReadingEnvy @BookBabe yes and those are books you "have" to read... I have book club a week from today but have I started that one? Nope. 5y
ReadingEnvy @MaureenMc me too, ugg 5y
ReadingEnvy @Leftcoastzen yes! In fact I brought a book home today that looks fairly quick so maybe the solution is another new book? 5y
andrew61 I am a strictly one book at a time reader until a reading envy readalong at which point i start to feel a little light headed ☺ 5y
Leftcoastzen Sometimes a quick short book makes me feel better about the pile!😃 5y
ReadingEnvy @andrew61 so you are saying you cheat on your reads for a readalong? 5y
ReadingEnvy @Leftcoastzen I get it for sure! I sat and read two short books tonight... Still thinking of the paramedic book though. 5y
MrBook Yep, the struggle is real. 😆🙌🏻 5y
andrew61 @ReadingEnvy yes, two or more books on the go is too much like multi tasking but i will definitely do it fir the readalong ☺ 5y

Traded in 8 books today and came home with these 4, and I still have store credit left over! Love trade-in bookstores. #bookhaul

Mehso-so

While a fascinating read, I left this book hoping for more discussion on the positive side of collecting. Bartlett touches on it, but I wanted more. Gilkey loves “collecting” books, except his definition of collecting is different than our definition. I did learn things about book collecting, which were very interesting. A fast read, but just okay for me. #whodunitthesequel

Crazeedi I just posted about reading books with *book* in the title and saw this. Sad that it didnt pass the muster or I may have picked it next! 6y
Librarybelle @Crazeedi You may like it! My expectations may have been too high, though the consensus I have seen is it‘s just okay. 6y
Crazeedi @Librarybelle ty, I will look into it a bit more! 6y

CouronneDhiver At least you have a cute kitty to keep you company. Mine is being a snob today. Lol 6y
Librarybelle @CouronneDhiver Haha! Cats have their own schedules. I‘m glad at least one of mine likes to be with me at any given time. 6y
JenlovesJT47 Hey! I have a question about the whodunitthesequel - could you email me at JenlovesJT47Swaps@gmail.com when you get a chance? 🙃 6y
