Darker Shade of Magic
Darker Shade of Magic | V E Schwab
STEP INTO A UNIVERSE OF DARING ADVENTURE, THRILLING POWER, AND MULTIPLE LONDONS.Kell is one of the last Travelers-magicians with a rare, coveted ability to travel between parallel universes, connected by one magical city. There's Grey London, dirty and boring, without any magic, and with one mad king-George III. Red London, where life and magic are revered-and where Kell was raised alongside Rhys Maresh, the rougish heir to a flourishing empire. White London-a place where people fight to control magic, and the magic fights back, draining the city to its very bones. And once upon a time, there was Black London. But no one speaks of that now.Officially, Kell is the Red Traveler, ambassador of the Maresh empire, carrying the monthly correspondences between the royals of each London. Unofficially, Kell is a smuggler, servicing people willing to pay for even the smallest glimpses of a world they'll never see. It's a defiant hobby with dangerous consequences, which Kell is now seeing firsthand.Fleeing into Grey London, Kell runs into Delilah Bard, a cut-purse with lofty aspirations. She first robs him, then saves him from a deadly enemy, and finally forces Kell to spirit her to another world for a proper adventure. Now perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save all of the worlds, they'll first need to stay alive.

Book 1 of the year, finished Jan 2, Audio

I really liked this one. A twist on fantasy I hadn't come across before.

4 cities in 4 worlds, all named London by some twist of fate. Connected by magic and only 2 men in all the worlds have the ability to cross between them.

Intriguing world, fast paced without rushing and characters I genuinely cared about. Pick it up.

this book was a bit more of a slow burn than I expected but the payoff is pretty good and I absolutely love the setting and magic concepts ? that being said, I'm not a fan of the "knocking out an antagonist but not killing them so they end up coming back later" trope used at a certain point and some of the inklings of instalove ? I'm also not really attached to Kell but Lila? she's amazing and I love her.

#fantasy

ShyBookOwl I just read this too. I really liked it! Lila kind of reminded me of Arya Stark and I love them both. I actually didn't get the instalove feel 🤷🏽‍♀️ maybe I blocked it out since I SO dislike that trope lol 2mo
uwak @ShyBookOwl it's pretty minor, just a couple of kisses and some teasing from side characters but still 😑 Lila strikes me as the type who'd be married to adventure given the option 😄 1mo
ShyBookOwl @uwak Haha I agree 1mo

This book had been on my TBR for a long time now, and I'm glad that I finally got to it. The worlds were so imaginative and the characters were delightful and fun to read about. I don't know what the sequels have in store, but I am very excited to start them!

I liked the idea of the four Londons, and I was certainly interested in the story. But I felt that it didn‘t have enough character development and that the pacing was off (all bad catastrophic stuff ALL the time). I liked the writing, though, and I‘ll probably read more Schwab in the future.

I really liked this @Avanders , and I used your bookmark with it, because it felt like a perfect match.

I thought this was YA, but I‘m not sure after reading it... anyone know how it‘s usually classified?

Anyway, I thought it had a bit of a slow start, but once I got through the world building part the story was great. I‘ll definitely continue the series. ❤️

Hi #AuthorAMonth folks! September must be a busy month for us all, as only 2 folks have posted reviews! 😱 If you have read a VE Schwab this month and posted your review, please check your post to be sure you used the hashtag and tagged me so I can record it on my spreadsheet.

October will be Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, put in your Library hold now 😊.

(Fan art found on Pinterest, artist not listed.)

ValerieAndBooks I am still waiting for the ebook hold to come in for this (edit: for Vicious) — I just couldn‘t touch the poor-condition print copy from the library anymore. I tried getting into the first of her Shades of Magic trilogy, but couldn‘t. Ebook hold just came in for this one 👉 and maybe it will do it for me for this month 🤞 (edited) 4mo

1) London, UK - not a unique choice 😶
2) overcast and humid morning - it's 8.15am
3) with a phycisist who only talked about his lab work, was sitting straight as a board in a pub and had no sense of humour
4) two kids, two cats
5) impatiently waiting for Friday to roll around the world. 😁

I know I was late to the party on this series, but I read it this summer and absolutely ❤️ it!

Kell & Lila & Rhy & Alucard & the alternate London captured me completely. I raced through the series, reading each book as quickly as possible. This is the kind of fantasy I fall for over and over again. Compulsive, immersive, inventive with characters who capture your imagination and make you wish you lived in their world. A new favorite🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

3.75⭐ This book has so much potential, but was blandly executed. The author claims this is not a YA novel, yet nothing about it is more mature, complex, or dark than a typical YA fantasy novel. All PG-13 action and easy prose. The plot is good but not great, & the characters a tad underdeveloped & predictable (though likeable enough to root for them). I'm curious to see how the series ends, but I'm not dying to pick up the sequel anytime soon.

I can‘t wait to see more of Rhy in the second book I‘ll just love him! 💕Overall I totally recommend this book to the moon and back!

I had high hopes for this. The plot has potential but it fell flat. I felt indifferent to the characters, no matter how much I tried, couldn‘t like any of them. Lila felt like the typical badass girl that has become popular in fantasy. Kell was boring. Every other character was one-dimensional. As much as this book talks about the four Londons there‘s really no other explanation to them or differences aside from how magic is used in each.

bg_reads This is exactly how I am feeling about this right now! I was kind of chewed out on Instagram for saying it wasn't my cup of tea... I'm not sure I want to keep going! 😨 6mo
eloreads @bg_reads Oh no! I‘m sorry that happened to you. I‘ll never understand why people do that, people have different opinions, we don‘t have to like the same things! I‘m not sure if I want to continue either. 6mo
