By October, I‘m usually looking for new challenges or events to liven up my reading game. This year, in the absence of #scarathlon (enjoy your family time ladies!) I‘m going to try #HauntedShelf with @PuddleJumper It seems very similar, which promises fun, and I just might get some books off my TBR shelf in the process!! Sign ups are open: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSe7g2cbAys_w6B9G5HHloV6kRr1yQvXVOptseGn...
I love horror and I genuinely thought I would love this, but I found it pretty shallow and misogynistic and I'm only 10 pages in. The writing style feels very juvenile, from the start it felt like I was reading something by a 15-year-old, experimenting with 'edgy' content for the first time.
I am CONVINCED that you can write transgressive fiction without making it shallow and go for low-hanging fruit like misogyny and blatant shock value.
A dreaded memory from a long time ago came back to haunt me.... This time I pushed through, got very sick multiple times and managed to read everything. What a vile disgusting mess this book is omg! I am happy to say that I have done it and hopefully we will never talk about this ever again!
Check out our discussion about it on the Mind Duck Books Podcast: https://bit.ly/3T6iHUI
It's getting to that time of year - the #HauntedHollowSwap is coming up!

New Book Review! In this episode, I review the disturbing cult classic, "Haunted" by Chuck Palahniuk.
https://youtu.be/K2RzOZZQ1eA
I‘ve read others reviews and… all I can say is you have to like this type of fiction… in my opinion it‘s one of the best books ever.
One of the opening short stories, “Guts,” was one of the ones that made Chuck famous, going around telling it and making people pass out. Someone who can do that with literature is truly powerful.
I am NOT one to shy away from disturbing. I mean, I finished Tampa. But when you venture into CSA and SA, there should be a good reason for it. I seriously can‘t believe some people read graphic descriptions of children being hurt for fun. It was solely for shock factor- there was no genuine message to justify it. I bailed after the story of a woman Being brutally violated and really, I wasted my time going that far.
This was the worst book I've read all year. The best thing about it was the glow in the dark cover ? I was familiar with "Guts" but was disappointed to know that the rest of the stories were not as funny or interesting. I feel like there was too much going on here. Too many characters and not enough development. Some sick ? written for the sake of shocking people. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone, but at least it was on theme for October ?
I made a new list for #bookspin July and these are my bookspin and #doublespin books.
I really hope to get them this month!
@thearomaofbooks
Thanks for the tag @brittanybooks 📚☕️🎉 #two4tuesday late joiner, but going for it anyway (I see you Wednesday posters already…)
1. Haunted by Chuck Palahniuk. Tagged title, and what a mess to call “love.” The book affected me. Deeply. Not for the light of heart.
2. Better is such a strong word! I think one word titles can hold a lot of layers of of meaning in very few characters.
@TheSpineView thanks for spreading!
Dark, Gross, Funny and Heartfelt. What a ride.
My kitten just got spayed so I spent the day reading with her and my other kitties. This was definitely an interesting read. I liked the variety of the stories and how different they were. This almost reminded me of a modern take on the Canterbury Tales in a really unique way. Definitely a typically dark read by Palahniuk and not for anyone who is squeamish at all.
So…I don‘t remember the last time I bailed on a book. Seriously, I always finish a book even if I‘m not loving it (hey, it could get better!). But I made it almost 2 1/2 hours into this and I can honestly say I have no idea what I was listening to. It wasn‘t scary…it wasn‘t funny…it wasn‘t interesting. Am I missing something? Also I‘m not sure how this effects my #bookspinbingo board. @TheAromaofBooks do I need to replace this with another one?
I've never tried a photo challenge before but I think I'm gonna give it a go this month! #haunted I don't really read anything spooky so I'm gonna have to improvise 😂
@Eggs @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks
I have a list of movies I watch every October. I‘ve added some this year. Most of these I own the DVD / Blueray ! And I spot some I forgot … The Addams Family movies. Priest. I‘m sure there are more. But this is a good start!
I got maybe halfway through this before I ditched it. It starts off strong by being almost obtusely grim. I didn't mind that so much, but a lot of the character's stories are centred around a singular and obvious key trait and it makes them feel quite two dimensional. Also the poetry didn't quite do it for me. Equally I like to read on the bus and I didn't feel I could really do that with this book! Just not for me.
*Old Review*
This book is AMAZING! Writers' Retreat: cue gross stories and the writers' belief that their story - of being locked up at a Writers' Retreat - will be a film and is a major event. They all starve each other, mutilate themselves and generate archetypal characters for themselves, telling a lot of stories along the way. Shuddersomely unpleasant.
First, the cover glows in the dark and that is super cool and I didn't know until I turned off the lights 😆
Second, after 22 pages I'm gonna be all done..it's just too gross for me.
I've read Palahniuk before but this just seemed a bit too far for my liking. Maybe I'm just getting old....
I'm halfway through it and I'm just not into it, so I'm giving up because I can be reading something that I find likeable.
Too many underdeveloped characters and I've lost track of what's going on..🤷♂️

Every page is dark and poetic. Every character and their story haunting
I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join the fun if you want.

Thank you!!! Now the agonizing wait begins. 🦈🖤👻🧙🏻♀️🧟♀️😈🤡👹☠️🎃 🧟♂️
Honestly, wasn‘t expecting Chuck Palahniuk book to be as prolific as it was. Still as grim and disturbing as the rest of Palahniuks work, but surprisingly touching in a couple of places. If you can get past the gore that is
