While this is a series of mini well-done character studies, as a whole this did not work for me. I have felt this way with her other books. The following is from my 2014 review of The Middlesteins and applies here:

Attenberg manages to write convincingly across generations, genders, and family lines. But I couldn't help feeling like each of the individual characters got short shrift. I was left wanting more.

Yikes, these people! I love a family drama and this one certainly had enough unhappiness and pain to go around. It was great: gritty, and evocative. However, is anyone truly as vile as Victor?! I found myself being jolted out of the story by the fact that this character was over the top bad. And Barbra felt one dimensional as well...too much like caricatures than real people.
That aside, the emotions jumped off the page at me and it's a pick.

Cathythoughts I have it stacked already! Looking forward to it 1w

Loved the precision of the language that gave a searing portrait of each family member, all of which bristle with toxicity, resentment & a huge dose of dysfunction but remain recognisable and relatable! New Orleans thrives as the additional character as do the men and women who work with the city to enable it to function. This novel was unsentimental - yet didn't lack heart - and I'm not sure how Atteberg has managed to do that! #newyearwhodis

Jami Attenberg is a wizard. That‘s the only way to explain how much I loved this book about a truly miserable family, all hollow and cruel, selfish and abusive and so very overwhelmed by life. The writing is exquisite, clever and precise and insightful. There are subplots that are woven together brilliantly and the city of New Orleans is a character in and of itself. Just fantastic. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

All This Could Be Yours is a slow, meandering portrait of a dysfunctional family. It took me a minute to find its rhythm when I started reading this, but as it progresses, the steady unravelling of flawed characters begins to make perfect sense. This character study asks big questions of its readers, about what makes us who we are, and the irrational nature of familial love. In the end I felt it was well done, and it captured my attention #tob2020

My second read for #TOB2020 is a book of saying goodbye to a narcotic patriarch of a dysfunctional family. This time of year was a great time for this read. It reminds me of how one way family can seem normal, but the closer you get to them their flaws can be revealed.

And a quick review of this book which I liked much more than most of the characters! They were extremely cruel (of course; would have been out of char to be nice to her) to poor Twyla. Team Avery, she‘s our only hope.

I spent a good bit of today #audiodiamondpainting while listening to this on #Audible. It‘s between a pick and so-so for me. While generally enjoyable and full of unique characters and bits of my favorite city, New Orleans, some parts just didn‘t work. A new character was introduced 90% in with the only link to the rest of the book being that one paragraph tells us she attended to another character in the last 5 mins of the book. Odd. ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

Hoopiefoot That part really threw me. I finished the book before bed but had to go back and reread that part in the AM to make sure I didn‘t imagine it! 3w
BlameJennyJane @Hoopiefoot ah, so it wasn‘t just me? I kept thinking maybe I missed something earlier in the story or something to tie it all up together that I overlooked or maybe a plant for a series... 🤷🏻‍♀️ Glad to know I wasn‘t alone. I liked the character and would have liked her to have been more relevant and developed. 3w

Eh, I hate to say this because I usually love Jami, but I didn‘t feel anything reading this. I just wasn‘t moved to care, love or hate, when the big reveals were made.

I love All Grown Up. I‘ve read it four times. Every time I cry. Without fail. This book didn‘t even come close to that one.

If I have to choose a #ToB #richpeopleproblems book, it‘s easily Fleishman Is in Trouble. Sorry 😐 2.5⭐️

Prairiegirl_reading Disappointing to hear!!! 1mo
Christine I‘m with you on this one. I enjoyed All Grown Up (and Saint Mazie) so much more. 1mo
Megabooks @Prairiegirl_reading Yeah, I was very disappointed. 1mo

Megabooks @Christine I liked AGU and The Middlesteins more. I haven‘t read Saint Mazie, but I own it. 1mo
BarbaraBB Oh that‘s too bad, I had been looking forward to it since @Cinfhen wrote about it. I wasn‘t too much of a fan though of All Grown Up so my expectations aren‘t too high! 1mo
Megabooks @BarbaraBB They‘re very different books, so you may like this one. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I wanted to love this book, but when it came down to the end...apathy. 1mo
Cinfhen Interesting! AGU ( which I loved) is more of a universal theme and this book might be less appealing to a wider audience. For some reason, the story got under my skin but I could see how the style would leave some feeling detached. Now I‘m more excited for Fleishman but I think you‘re right, Meg. These books probably cancel out each other. I still think you‘re gonna like this one @BarbaraBB 1mo
Megabooks @Cinfhen I don‘t know why this didn‘t get to me. Normally I like family drama stories. In fact, I‘d say that‘s a usual go-to. The magic just wasn‘t there. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 1mo
Cinfhen I still don‘t get one bit and it‘s bugging me. What was the point/connection to the black man who had a stroke and couldn‘t reach his daughter 🤷🏼‍♀️ a sort of opposite experience of Victor‘s family ??? I thought that storyline might be interconnected but it just fizzled. 1mo
Megabooks @Cinfhen yeah, idk what was going on with that. I didn‘t even get why there were those chapters about the coroner and her boyfriend. All that just so his family could dump him in a pauper‘s grave?? 1mo
BarbaraBB @Megabooks @Cinfhen I just finished Fleishman and now really want to read this one. As I wrote in my review I ended up being really annoyed by the storyline, even though I liked the book a lot! #richpeoplesproblems 1mo
Megabooks @BarbaraBB Just wrote you back a lengthy reply! Managed to keep it to two tags! 😂 1mo

I‘m surprised to see such negative reviews on GoodReads. I wonder if because I listened on audio I had a different reaction to this book. I was deeply connected to the story and found myself simultaneously sympathizing & judging many of the characters. JA writes so effortlessly & her sense of place is felt so vividly. This story of family secrets slowly unravels, each secret juicer than the next. And traveling to NOLA was just an added bonus. 4🌟

The lives of each family member is explored as the father, a violent, philandering criminal, lies in a coma. The ways in which the patriarch affected each person is deep and painful. I found the sections involving the wife to be quite compelling. The bargains she made with herself and the love/hate she felt for her husband were well portrayed. I appreciated the structure of the storytelling and I find the characters have stayed with me.

I like her writing a lot, but I‘m really not sure what her intent was with this book. Family members have to finally talk to each other when the father is dying. He was a horrible man and nobody is sad he‘s going. We follow each family member around and learn about their lives, but that‘s it. There are also some long sections on completely peripheral characters that seem to be there just for filler. 3⭐️

A not-so-nice patriarch lies dying in a New Orleans hospital forcing his family members to sort out their relationship to him and each other.
An easy, enjoyable and maybe somewhat forgettable read. This is the 3rd novel I've read this year that gives viewpoints of people met in passing: a main character tips a waitress and then the waitress tells her story and then isn't hear from again. Big Sky and Lady in the Lake were the others. A 2019 thing?

Went and saw Jami Attenberg tonight. Loved it. I finished the audiobook earlier today and had a very good time reading it. It‘s juicy. It‘s fast-paced. It‘s about what a dysfunctional and very wealthy family does when the patriarch (an undeniably BAD man) is in a coma. One child asks, “Do you promise?”

Jami described the book as kaleidoscopic and I agree. Central characters exist, also cameos of others; every one has a place and feels explored.

Family dysfunctional dynamics at its finest. Attenberg crisply depicts her characters with raw realism. I love her writing style. It‘s interesting that this book takes place during the 24 hours after the family‘s patriarch is struck down by a heart attack. In that short time, each family member is well drawn out and many family questions are answered.

Our morning of dance classes is over, so I‘m going to take some time with a fresh cup of coffee to finish Attenberg‘s latest. It‘s my favorite book of hers. I can‘t say enough of the deep character studies and raw, realistic portrayal of the good/bad binary.

#bathandbook tonight.

After hearing Jami speak the other day, I had to get started on her new book right away.

For my bath, I‘m pumped about these new Dr Teals tea bath soaks. For about $5, you get three sachets. This one is lavender, with epsom salt, oats, and botanicals. They‘re not as strongly scented in the bath as I‘d prefer, but still worth it.

Reviewsbylola I got them on Amazon! Typically the Dr Teals stuff is so marked up on there, so I buy it at Target, but these are the same price on Amazon as they are in stores (and I only know that from checking Target‘s website. I‘ve never actually seen them at the store!) @saresmoore 2mo

This blanket is about as festive as I will get until after thanksgiving. I still have all my fall decorations up for now. Finally starting this book because I was feeling sad after leaving New Orleans this weekend, but it was a wonderful whirlwind wedding in my favorite city.

@Mdargusch and I got to go to a lovely luncheon with Jami Attenberg today! Her flight was delayed, so we thought she wouldn‘t make it, but luckily she made it at the end! It was a fantastic atmosphere, and one man at our table even drove three hours to be there because he loved All Grown Up so much! You can see him in one pic reading us a portion as we waited. 😄 Jami was so down to earth and inspiring. I can‘t wait to read her new novel after ⬇️

Reviewsbylola hearing her talk about it. She‘s lived in NOLA for two years and that is the setting for this book. She intended for the novel to start on what is now chapter six, but after Maria Semple (😮😮 part of her “reading group,” which also includes Lauren Geoff and Courtney Sullivan!!!) told her the story needed more background, she wrote what are now the first six chapters. She has an active dislike for the patriarch of the book Victor, and she even ⬇️ 2mo
Reviewsbylola shared with us details of what she‘s working on next. (Spoiler alert, it‘s a NF essay collection! You may be extra interested @megabooks. It seems up your alley!) I‘m totally fan girling over here. 🥰 2mo
LauraBeth Oohh - thanks for all of these details! This sounds like it was a fabulous time. She‘s very active on Twitter and fun to follow. I feel like I‘ve gotten to know all about her living in NOLA and her dog. 😀 2mo

Reviewsbylola I‘m not a twitterer but it was funny, once we heard she was late and may not make it, we all jumped on Twitter to see her status. She had tweeted an hour before that her plane still hadn‘t taken off and then gone radio silent so we assumed that meant she was in the air and that we had a chance. 😆 @LauraBeth 2mo
Cinfhen So awesome!!! I love her books!!! A little jealous 😘 2mo

I liked this one. Not my favorite Attenberg, but a solid dysfunctional family saga, if that‘s what you‘re craving. (I did the audio but think I might have preferred the print?) I will say that the characters were really great - I felt invested in almost all of them, just wanted more story for more than a few of them.

Whew. Those were some flawed messed up people. A brutish violent man and the consequences his actions have on him and his family. Even past death. It was riveting to watch their complicated family and relationships throughout their lives. Like The Maury Povich show but way darker! 5 stars for this one.

Rachel.Rencher This sounds really good! Have you read this one? It's along the same lines of family dysfunction... 2mo
Cinfhen I can‘t wait to read this one!! I love Jamie Attenberg 2mo

First cup of coffee and first book of the weekend. And it just happens to be Readathon Weekend! I won‘t be able to get in 24 hours but every minute that isn‘t committed to something else (like my daughter‘s Homecoming festivities (school didn‘t get the memo that this is a bad weekend for me 🤣)) will be spent reading. Are you participating in @DeweysReadathon ?

Y‘all know I read a lot of books. And I enjoy many of them. I really love several of them. And then there are a couple every year I want to rub against everyone‘s face until they read it. This is one of those books. 🧡

ALL THIS COULD BE YOURS is a searing indictment of familial obligation that asks just what we really owe each other. It examines the gray areas of life with all the sharp edges, and the decisions we make and are made for us.🧡🏆🧡

Book birthday for the new Jami Attenberg is coming up on Tuesday, and it‘s a good one!
Her characters are messy, authentic, and real.

Set in New Orleans, a family convenes while the patriarch, the definition of a very toxic man, is on his deathbed. Reflecting on their lives and intersecting relationships, the family dysfunction of past and present is sorted through with hope that they can move forward on the other side.
